Appearance patterns of freshwater fish were investigated in the western Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) adjacent areas near Imjin River in Gyeonggi-do, Korea, of 2014. A total of 61 species belonging to 14 families were found in the river during the survey. The dominant and subdominant species were Zacco platypus (Relative abundance, 20.3%) and Zacco koreanus (12.6%), respectively. Other abundant species include Rhinogobius brunneus (9.2%), Pungtungia herzi (4.4%), Acheilognathus yamatsutae (4.4%), and Pseudogobio esocinus (4.0%). Among the residing species, 24 species (39.3%) were endemic to Korea; and 1 species, Carassius cuvieri, was non-indigenous species. Hemibarbus mylodon is a natural monument, and Lethenteron reissneri, Acheilognathus signifer, Pseudopungtungia tenuicorpa, Gobiobotia brevibarba, G. macrocephala, and G. naktongensis are endangered species in Korea. In addition, Anguilla japonica and Plecoglossus altivelis are catadromous and amphidromous species, respectively. Among the investigated sites, the lower part of Sami Stream (St. 5, 6) and Gunnarm-dam region (St. 11, 14) are particularly valuable for the conservation of species diversity, because many fish species (33~42 species) including a natural monument and several endangered species inhabit in these regions.
Abstract The purpose of study is to identify the relationship between stable isotope composition of reed stems in coastal and understand the structure of the fish community in 10 lagoons along the East Sea. The fish species composition (particularly, anadromous fish species) and relative abundance of trophic guilds was influenced by difference of geomorphic characteristics among lagoons. Reed stems ${\delta}^{13}C$ and ${\delta}^{15}N$ values ranged from $-28.40{\pm}0.11$‰ to $-26.87{\pm}0.25$‰ and $-1.09{\pm}1.45$‰ to $12.08{\pm}0.53$‰, respectively. The differences in reed stem ${\delta}^{15}N$ values might be associated with anthropogenic landuse and the geomorphic characteristics among lagoons. These results provide useful information to improve the conservation of fish habitats (biodiversity), preserve lagoon habitats and contribute to watershed management effect against anthropogenic pollution from watershed in these lagoon ecosystems.
From April to October 2008, fish fauna was surveyed at 25 sites in Lake Ganwol and Lake Bunam watersheds. There were 32 species of 25 genera and 10 families belonging to 5 orders. Among them, Zacco platypus (relative abundance was 28.0%) was dominant, followed by Hemiculter eigenmanni (24.3%), Carassius auratus (19.3%), and Pseudorasbora parva (10.8%). In comparison of specific frequency in fish community between two lakes, Z. platypus (36.6%) was dominant and P. parva (15.7%) subdominant in Lake Ganwol, whereas H. eigenmanni (35.2%) and C. auratus (30.4%) were dominant in Lake Bunam. Eight species including Acheilognathus chankaensis were known to be Korean endemic species, and exotic species was Micropterus salmodes. Biological indices of fish community indicated mostly similar values in 25 sites. Specific similarities of fish community in the sites were largely divided into two groups: a group of the Waryong Stream and the Dodang Stream where water flows throughout the year, and the other group of watersheds at Lake Ganwol and Lake Bunam where water was static. Fish fauna and structure of fish communities have some differences between Lake Ganwol and Lake Bunam watersheds, and also can be distinguished to the environmental factors of habitats in same watershed.
Five year term monitoring investigating variation of allochthonous originated gravels are has been conducted in the beach gravel deposit of the Island Dokdo natural reserve which takes purity and uniqueness with enormous attention though a number of areas. The beach gravel deposits near the dock of the Dongdo and near the accommodation facility of the Seodo comprise various types of gravels including basalt, trachyte, and tuff from the Dokdo itself, and granite, rhyolite, gneiss, quartzite, marble, and concrete from elsewhere. The types of the allochthonous gravels on the basis of the study in 2011 and in 2016 shows no difference, so is the ranking of abundance of the allochthonous gravels; granite-concrete-gneiss in turn on the Dongdo, concrete-gneiss-granite in turn on the Seodo. Nevertheless, the relative ratio of the allochthonous gravel area against the total area is decreased. While it is suspected that the disintegrated facility and the influx of material for construction are the main 2 reasons for the contamination by allochthonous gravel, diminished total contamination ratio indicate that supervising allochthonous material has been improved; at least not worse during the 5 years. On the other hand, it is inferred that gradual influence of rockfall also has been made the gravel beach changed. Therefore, consistent rockfall investigation must be inquired.
Temperature is an important environmental factor that can greatly influence the cultivation of Auricularia cornea. In this study, lignin peroxidase, laccase, manganese peroxidase, and cellulose in A. cornea fruiting bodies were tested under five different temperatures ($20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$, and $40^{\circ}C$) in three different culture periods (10 days, 20 days and 30 days). In addition, the V4 region of bacterial 16S rRNA genes in the substrate of A. cornea cultivated for 30 days at different temperatures were sequenced using next-generation sequencing technology to explore the structure and diversity of bacterial communities in the substrate. Temperature and culture days had a significant effect on the activities of the four enzymes, and changes in activity were not synchronized with changes in temperature and culture days. Overall, we obtained 487,694 sequences from 15 samples and assigned them to 16 bacterial phyla. Bacterial community composition and structure in the substrate changed when the temperature was above $35^{\circ}C$. The relative abundances of some bacteria were significantly affected by temperature. A total of 35 genera at five temperatures in the substrate were correlated, and 41 functional pathways were predicted in the study. Bacterial genes associated with the membrane transport pathway had the highest average abundance (16.16%), and this increased at $35^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$. Generally, different temperatures had impacts on the physiological activity of A. cornea and the bacterial community in the substrate; therefore, the data presented herein should facilitate cultivation of A. cornea.
Objectives: We investigated differences between the tracheostomized and the non-tracheostomized stroke patients through microbiological analysis for the purpose of preliminary explorations of full-scale clinical research in the future. Methods: We collected tracheal aspirates samples from 5 stroke patients with tracheostomy and expectorated sputum samples from 5 stroke patients without tracheostomy. Genomic DNA from sputum samples was isolated using QIAamp DNA mini kit. The sequences were processed using Quantitative Insights into Microbial Ecology 1.9.0. Alpha-diversity was calculated using the Chao1 estimator. Beta-diversity was analyzed by UniFrac-based principal coordinates analysis (PCoA). To confirm taxa with different abundance among the groups, linear discriminant analysis effect size analysis was performed. Results: Although alpha-diversity value of the tracheostomized group was higher than that of the non-tracheostomized group, there was no statistically significant difference. In PCoA, clear separation was seen between clusters of the tracheostomized group and that of the non-tracheostomized group. In both groups, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Fusobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria were identified as dominant in phylum level. In particular, relative richness of Proteobacteria was found to be 31% more in the tracheotomized group (36.6%) than the non-tracheostomized group (5.6%)(P<0.05). In genus level, Neisseria (24%), Prevotella (17%), Streptococcus (13%), Fusobacteria (11%), Porphyromonas (7%) were identified as dominant in the tracheostomized group. In the non-tracheostomized group, Prevotella (38%), Veillonella (20%), Neisseria (9%) were genera that found to be dominant. Conclusions: It is meaningful in that the tracheostomized group has been identified a higher rate of microbiotas known as pathogenic in respiratory diseases compared to the non-tracheostomized group, confirming the possibility that the risk of opportunity infection may be higher.

The total area of paddy field was estimated to be 55 % of the cultivated lands in South Korea, which is approximately 1 million hectares. Organisms inhabiting paddy fields if they are sensitive to environmental changes can be environmental indicator of paddy fields. Biological indicators such as phenology and distributional range are evaluated as intuitive and quantitative method to analyze the impact of climate change. This study aims to estimate flight time change of Hydrophilidae species' based on the RCP 8.5 climate change scenario. Unmanned monitoring systems were installed in Haenam, Buan, Dangjin and Cheorwon relative to the latitudinal gradient. In the three regions excepting Cheorwon, it was able to measure the abundance of flying Hydrochara affinis and Sternolophus rufipes. Degree-day for the flight time was determined based either on field measurement values and estimates of 2020s, 2050s and 2080s from KMA climate change scenario data. As a result, it is found that date of both species of initial flight becomes 15 days earlier, that of peak flight becomes 22 days earlier and that of final flight does 27 days earlier in 2080s compared to 2020s. The climate change impact on flight time is greater in coastal area, rural area and valley than inland area, urban area and plan. H. affinis and S. rufipes can be used as climate change indicator species.
The ichthyofauna in certain reservoirs in Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do were studied from August 17 to September 22, 2005. During the study period, 22,747 individuals belonging to 25 species, 20 genera, 9 families and 4 orders were collected. Of these, 14 species were cyprinid fishes, and the dominant species was Pseudorasbora parva (relative abundance 52.28%). There were six Korean endemic species (8.51%), including Sarcocheilichthys variegatus wakiyae, Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae, Squalidus mulimaculatus, Hemiculter eigenmanni, Pseudobagrus brevicorpus and Odontobutis platycephala the dominant species was Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae (7.59%). There were six introduced species (25.00%), of which Hemiculter eigenmanni, Pseudobagrus fulvidraco and Hypomesus nipponensis were introduced from other native stream systems (20.99%), and Cyprinus carpio (Israeli), Carassius cuvieri and Lepomis macrochirus were exotic species (4.01%).
Fish field survey, especially fish distribution and their ecological characteristics, was performed in the downstream region of Gyeongan stream during the period of before (June) and after (October) the summer monsoon in 2010. Depending on the characteristics of each site, fyke net or casting net was used for fish sampling. Feeding classification was determined by the analysis of stomach contents. Total number of family and species sampled were 5 and 17, respectively. The dominant family was Cyprinidae (12 species), and relative abundance (RA) of the most dominant species, Lepomis macrochirus and Zacco platypus, was 38% and 24%, respectively. Exotic species and Korean endemic species observed were 3 (423 individuals, RA 44%) and 4 (98 individuals, RA 10%), respectively. Tolerance guild analysis as characteristics of ecological indicators revealed an undoubtedly high percentage (97%), compared to others as reflected by the identification of just one sensitive species. Analysis of trophic guilds showed that L. macrochirus dominated among insectivores (44% RA). The food of L. macrochirus composed of, aquatic insects, benthic invertebrates, zooplankton, Chironomidae, and waterweed. Thus, we determined that L. macrochirus could be classified as insectivores (partially carnivores) in this study. Conversely, Z. platypus consumed Cladocera exclusively, greater than 90% of their feed. We presume that stable isotope analysis would identify the exact position of these species in the food web.

Insomuch as it is important to manage water quality, from the perspective of water management, it is essential to understand the effect of the weirs on water quality and phytoplankton dynamics in various regions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of nitro-nutrients, as well as occurrences and succession patterns of phytoplankton, in the river sections of the two weirs in the Yeongsan River for the five years (from 2012 to 2016) after the weir construction. In respect to this data, the average water temperature measured at the representative point in the section of the Seungchon Weir ($17.1^{\circ}C$) was higher than that of the Juksan Weir ($16.6^{\circ}C$) by comparison. By way of an analysis of this data, it was found that the water quality variables such as, organic matter, nitrogen nutrients and phosphorus nutrients were improved gradually during the period, but the degree of the improvement differs as noted and measured between the weirs. Under the circumstances, it is especially noted that the $NH_3-N$ concentration was higher for the point of the Seungchon Weir (2.204 mg/L) than that of the Juksan Weir (1.157 mg/L). This indicates that effluent as seen from sewage treatment plants and hydrological feature near the densely population area, could be the main cause for the incidence of water pollution in the upstream section of the Seungchon Weir. Additionally, the phytoplankton analysis showed that a relative abundance of diatoms and green algae were 56.9 % and 25.8 % respectively. However, it is noted that the cyanobacteria was measured lower as 10.7 %. Also, in the study sites cell density and occurrence frequency of cyanobacteria were relatively lower than compared to the same measurements noted in other rivers.
