  • Antioxidative characteristics of doenjang(fermented soybeans paste) phenolics on the lipid oxidation systems were studied by the determination of the oxidative related activity including lipoxygenase (LOX) inhibition, metal chelating and free radical scavengning of doenjang phenolics. Manlikong variety containing the highest amounts of phenolic compounds among the soybean variety, was used for doenjang processing. Doenjang was prepared by the series of processes including soaking for overnight, cooking for 1hr at 12Lb, first fermentation (3 days at 30$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$) for the preparation of meju(soybean koji) after inoculation of Asp. oryzae, and further fermentation(60 days at 30$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$) for the ripening after addition of salt 13% to meju. In order to investigate the antioxidative activity of phenolics in doenjang, the doenjang phenolics was extracted with methanol form freeze dried defatted doenjang. Antioxidative effects of methanol extract on linoleic acid oxidation system were observed by the significantly decreased levels of peroxide and conjugated diene formation. In addition, methanol extract resulted in the inhibition of LOX activity. and also, metal(FeCl$_3$) chelation and free radical scavengning activities were increased with increasing concentration of methanol extract.

  • Each cultural community has developed a variety of fonts to express their own language and characters. Hangul has also diversified its font shapes through changing the composition ratio and look of the consonants and vowels. Rather, thanks to the variety of these fonts, a considerable amount of time and effort must be devoted to the selection of a specific font shape. This is related to the fact that the current Hangul service and classification system process the font only with its name or the name of the manufacturer. It means that there is no consensus about the font shape classification system for Hangul. In this study, we propose a shape property set that can be a basis for classifying Hangul fonts. The font shape property set was generated by performing statistical analysis with features which have been studied by the font design experts and was verified through questionnaire using representative fonts based on the classification scheme defined by the Hangul font design classification system standard. This study is meaningful in that it is a study on shape classification properties of K-means and PCA statistical techniques based on font data rather than design field study.

  • Heteromagnetic nanostructures, which consist of two or more different layers such as nonmagnet, insulator, ferromagnet, antiferromagnet, and superconductor, have been widely used in current and likely future spintronics devices. Their many intriguing magnetic properties are originated from a variety of magnetic interactions at relevant length scales at or near interfaces and between different constituent layers as well as laterally different regions in chemical and magnetic heterogeneity. The fundamental properties can thus differ along depth and laterally in the film plane, depending on their relevant coupling length scales. The entire properties may be characterized by interface properties and/or the depth-varying properties of the individual constituent layers, and lateral inhomogeneity as well. It is a challenge to investigate both depth-varying properties and lateral heterogeneity in such heteromagnetic nanostructures. In this talk, soft x-ray magneto-optical effect as a nanometer scale probe of a variety of heteromagnetic structures is presented and its related noble techniques are introduced. For instances, magnetization vector imaging to investigate vector spin configurations in the film plane is presented, as well as the Kerr rotation, ellipticity, and intensity measurements as a depth sensitive probe on the atomic scales.

  • This study introduces how GISs (Geographic Information Systems) are used to assess spatial disparities in urban green spaces in the Chicago. Green spaces provide us with a variety of benefits, namely environmental, economic, and physical benefits. This study seeks to explore socioeconomic relationships between green spaces and their surrounding communities and to evaluate spatial disparities from a variety of perspectives, such as health-related, socioeconomic, and physical environment factors. To achieve this goal, this study used spatial statistics, such as optimized hotspot analysis, network analysis, and space-time cluster analysis, which enable conclusions to be drawn from the geographic data. In particular, 12 variables within the three factors are used to assess spatial disparities in the benefits of the use of green spaces. Finally, the variables are standardized to rank the community areas and identify where the most vulnerable community areas or parks are. To evaluate the benefits given to the community areas, this study used the z- and composite scores, which are compared in the three different combinations. After identifying the most vulnerable community area, crime data is used to spatially understand when and where crimes occur near the parks selected. This work contributes to the work of urban planners who need to spatially evaluate community areas in considering the benefits of the uses of green spaces.

  • Fifty-four Korean native and 28 foreign varieties harvested in 1998 and 1999 were examined for superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities. The SOD and POD activities of leaves extracts in Korean native and foreign rice varieties showed variation at the heading stage. The activities of SOD and POD changed with growth stage. In comparison of storage duration, the SOD and POD activities of the extract from three months stored seeds in Korean native (CV=53.3%) and foreign rice (CV=57.9%) varieties were higher than that of stored rices for a year in seed extracts although the activities among varieties did not show significant variation. Also, the averaged activity of foreign rice varieties (SOD=12.9%) was relatively higher than that of korean native rice varieties (SOD=10.7%). The test of activity at the enzymatic level related to antioxidative activity suggests that the rice varieties with higher antioxidative potentials can be developed and also may provide information with rice breeder to breed rice variety with a high antioxidative activity.
