Elastic modulus, tensile and bond capacities are important factors for developing an effective reinforcing action of a flexural member as a reinforcing material for concrete structures. Reinforcement must have enough bond capacity to prevent the relative slip between concrete and reinforcement. This paper presents an experimental study to clarify the bond capacity of prestressed carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) rod manufactured by an automatic assembly robot. The bond characteristics of CFRP rods with different pitch of helical wrapping were analyzed experimentally. As the result, all types of CFRP rods show a high initial stiffness and good ductility. The mechanical properties of helical wrapping of the CFRP rods have an important effect on the bond of these rods to concrete after the bond stress reached the yield point. The stress-slip relationship analyzed from the pull-out test of embedded cables within concrete was linear up to maximum bond capacity. The deformation within the range of maximum force seems very low and was reached after approximately 1 mm. The average bond capacity of CF20, CF30 and CF40 was about 12.06 MPa, 12.68 MPa and 12.30 MPa, respectively. It was found that helical wrapping was sufficient to yield bond strengths comparable to that of steel bars.

The purpose of this study is to establish flexural behavior of high-strength concrete beams confined in the pure bending zone with stirrups. The experiment was carried out on full-scale high-strength reinforced concrete beams, of which the compressive strengths were 40 MPa and 70 MPa. The beams were confined with rectangular closed stirrups. Test results are reviewed in terms of flexural capacity and ductility. The effect of web reinforcement ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio and shear span to beam depth ratio on ductility are investigated. The analytic method is based on finite element method using fiber-section model, which is known to define the behavior of reinforced concrete structures well up to the ultimate state and is proven to be valid by the verification with the experimental results above. It is found that confinement of concrete compressive regions with closed stirrups does not affect the flexural strength but results in a significantly increased ductility. Moreover, the ductility tends to increase as the quantity of stirrups increases by reducing the spacing of stirrups.

Corrosion of reinforcement steel is a major cause of deterioration in reinforced concrete (RC) structures. In order to protect these structures from corrosion, corrosion inhibitors are added to the concrete mix. In recent years, zwitterionic compounds have shown promising results as corrosion inhibitors in concrete due to their ability to form a protective layer on the surface of the reinforcement steel. The experimental study involves preparing concrete samples with different concentrations of adding the hybrid corrosion inhibitor at a high concentration of chloride ions. This study aims to determine the chloride threshold value and service life of hybrid corrosion inhibitors in reinforced concrete based on zwitterions. The samples are subjected to accelerated corrosion tests in a chloride environment to determine the threshold value and service life of the corrosion inhibitor. The effect of hybrid inhibitor on mechanical properties is guaranteed in allowable range. The chloride threshold concentration and service life of hybrid inhibitor containing samples perform greater than those of plain RC.

Recent long-span bridges, such as Kwang-Ahn Grand bridge, Seo-Hae Grand Bridge, Young-Jong Grand Bridge, etc, have been designed and constructed near the shore. Thus, it needs to analyze the durability of marine concrete structures which are exposed to severe chloride environments. It is well known that corrosion of reinforcement steel in concrete is one of the major factors for the durability of concrete structures. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the performance of impressed current system and corrosion inhibitors for the corrosion protection of reinforced concrete structures. Concrete test specimens were made with various test parameters, such as cover depth, steel diameter, compressive strength, direction and frequency of notch. For the efficient evaluation of these corrosion protection systems, these tests have been carried out in the shore.
During the past decades, development of reinforcing materials caused a revolution in the structure of high strength and high performance cement-based concrete. Among the most important and exciting reinforcing materials, Steel Fiber (SF) becomes a widely used in the recent years. The main reason for addition of SF is to enhance the toughness and tensile strength and limit development and propagation of cracks and deformation characteristics of the SF blended concrete. Basically this technique of strengthening the concrete structures considerably modifies the physical and mechanical properties of plain cement-based concrete which is brittle in nature with low flexural and tensile strength compared to its intrinsic compressive strength. This paper presents an overview of the work carried out on the use of SF as reinforcement in cement-based concrete matrix. Reported properties in this study are fresh properties, mechanical and durability of the blended concretes.

Although many structures. with high strength concrete have been recently constructed, the flexural behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete beams with high strength concrete is not exactly defined. This paper presents an experimental study on the flexural strength of the high strength concrete beams. Five large scale beams simply supported were tested and measured. Each beam was loaded by two symmetrical concentrated loads applied at 1.25m from the center of span. The concrete strength, the prestressed force and longitudinal tensile reinforcement ratio vary from beam to beam. From the experimental tests, the flexural strength from tests is larger than the nominal flexural strength of codes. Moreover, the initial crack-load is affected by the prestressed force and the crack width and spacing are controlled by the longitudinal tensile reinforcement ratio.

Recently, premature reinforcement corrosion in concrete structures exposed to chloride containing environments has an important problem. This is due to an increasing use of marine aggregate of chloride containing admixture a the mixing stage and due to an increase of concrete construction in marine environments. In this study, the behavior of chloride ions introduced into concrete from concrete surface by a marine environment was modeled. The physicochemcial processes including the diffusion of chloride ion in aqueous phase of pores, the adsorption and desorption of chloride ions to and from the surface of solid phase of concrete, and the chemical reaction of chloride ion with solid phase were analyzed by using the finite element method. The results of this study may be used to predict the onset of reinforcement corrosion, and identify the maximum limit of chloride ions contained in admixtures.

In this paper, a design equation for the punching shear capacity of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) slabs is proposed based on the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) standard specifications. Addition of steel fibers into concrete improves mechanical behavior, ductility, and fatigue strength of concrete. Previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of fiber reinforcement in improving the shear behavior of reinforced concrete slabs. In this study, twelve SFRC slabs using hooked-ends type steel fibers are tested with varying fiber dosage, slab thickness, steel reinforcement ratio, and compressive strength. Furthermore, test data conducted by earlier researchers are involved to verify the proposed design equation. The proposed design equation addresses the fiber pull-out strength and the critical shear perimeter changed by the fiber factor. Consequently, it is confirmed that the proposed design equation can predict the punching shear capacity of SFRC slabs with an applicable accuracy.
Chloride induced reinforcement corrosion is widely accepted to be the most frequent mechanism causing premature degradation of reinforced concrete structures. The electrochemical impedance of reinforcing steel in diatomite- and zeolite-containing concrete exposed to sodium chloride was assessed. Chemical, physical and mineralogical properties of three concrete samples (20% diatomite, 20% zeolite, and a reference containing neither) were correlated with corrosion investigations. The steel-reinforced samples were exposed to 3.5% NaCl solution for 500 days, and measured every 15 days via EIS method. Results indicated that porosity and capillary spaces increase the diffusion rate of water and electrolytes throughout the concrete, making it more susceptible to cracking. Reinforcement in the reference concrete was the most corroded compare to the zeolite and the diatomite samples.
