Life-cycle performance analysis of a reinforced concrete box section bridge was generated. Moreover, Monte Carlo simulation with important sampling (IS) was used to simulate the bridge material and load uncertainties. The bridge deterioration model was generated with the basic probabilistic principles and updated according to the measurement data. A genetic algorithm (GA) with the response surface model (RSM) was used to determine the deterioration rate. The importance of health monitoring systems to sustain the bridge to give services economically and reliably and the advantages of fiber-optic sensors for SHM applications were discussed in detail. This study showed that the most effective loss of strength in reinforced concrete box section bridges is corrosion of the reinforcements. Due to reinforcement corrosion, the use of the bridge, which was examined, could not meet the desired strength performance in 25 years, and the need for reinforcement. In addition, it has been determined that long-term health monitoring systems are an essential approach for bridges to provide safe and economical service. Moreover the use of fiber optic sensors has many advantages because of the ability of the sensors to be resistant to environmental conditions and to make sensitive measurements.
Recent earthquakes have damaged some bridges located on the Pacific Coast of Mexico; these bridges have been retrofitted or rebuilt. Based on the fact that the Pacific Coast is a highly active seismic zone where most of the strong earthquakes in the country occur, one fertile and important area of research is the study of the vulnerability of both new and existent bridges located in this area that can be subjected to strong earthquakes. This work is focused on estimating the contribution of some parameters identified to have major influence on the seismic vulnerability of reinforced concrete bridges. Ten models of typical reinforced concrete (RC) bridges, and two existing bridges located close to the Pacific Coast of Mexico are considered. The group of structures selected for the study is based on two span bridges, two pier heights and two substructure types. The bridges were designed according to recent codes in Mexico. For the vulnerability study, the capacity of the structure was evaluated based on the FEMA recommendations. On the other hand, the demand was evaluated using a group of more than one hundred accelerograms recorded close to the subduction zone of Mexico. The results show that the two existent bridges analyzed show similar trends of behavior of the group of bridge models studied. In spite of the contribution that traditional variables (height and substructure type) had to the bridge seismic response, the bridge length was also found to be one of the parameters that most contributed to the seismic vulnerability of these RC medium-length bridges.

In this study, the governing design factors of GFRP-reinforced concrete bridge deck are analyzed for typical bridges in Korea. The adopted bridge deck is a cast-in-situ concrete bridge deck for the prestressed concrete girder bridge with dimensions of 240 mm thickness and 2.75 m span length from center-to-center of supporting girders. The selected design variables are the diameters of GFRP rebar, spacings of GFRP rebars and concrete cover thicknesses, Considering the absence of the specification relating GFRP rebar in Korea, AASHTO specification is used to design the GFRP-reinforced concrete bridge deck. The GFRP-reinforced concrete bridge deck is proved to be governed by the criteria about serviceability, especially maximum crack width, while steel reinforced concrete bridge deck is governed by the criteria on ultimate limit state. In addition, GFRP rebars with diameter of 16 mm ~ 19 mm should be used for the main transverse direction of decks to assure appropriate rebar spacings.

The so-called Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis on reinforced concrete bridge can provide useful information for initial design and maintenance plan of the RC bridge. This paper proposes an LCC prediction equation and a sensitivity analysis method for RC bridges. An LCC equation for the RC bridge which includes initial investment cost, maintenance cost, and demolition cost was derived and verified from the data for design and construction of an RC slab bridge. In order to solve uncertainty problem on actual discount rate and material characteristics in the analysis of LCC of concrete bridges, a sensitivity analysis method on the LCC using the Monte Carlo simulation technique was suggested.

The masonry stone arch bridge, due to its superior durability and aesthetics, has been one of the oldest and popular types of short span bridges. In Europe, this type of bridges have been continuously constructed, and numerous related researches have been conducted until recently. However, there are few construction cases in Korea since the economic efficiency and the construction effectiveness is not contentable. Therefore, this study proposed the reinforced joint to improve structural performance of the conventional arch systems which is proposed by previous researchers. The structural performance of the proposed reinforced joint, which consists of the transverse loop joint and the longitudinal reinforcement, is validated by experimental test of an arch bridge which is constructed using precast concrete segments. Based on this results of the experimental test, it is concluded that the strength of arch bridges can be enhanced by applying the proposed reinforced joints since the reinforced joint restrains hinge behavior and relative displacement between segments with a little reinforcement.
The purpose of the present study is to explore the effects of local reinforced type and to suggest reliable failure mechanism and the design criteria on the anchorage zones of the precast prestressed concrete bridges. To accomplish these objectives, a comprehensive experimental and analytical study has been conducted. From this study, the cracking and ultimate load capacities for spirally reinforced anchorage zone are found to be larger than those for orthogonal reinforced anchorage zone. This indicate the effectiveness of spiral reinforcement in controlling the cracking. And realistic failure mechanism and design criteria of prestressed anchorage zones based on the present study are suggested.
Reinforced concrete (RC) has been used as a construction material in various environments, such as airports, bridges, and ocean concrete structures, etc. Over time, however, rebar in the concrete is prone to corrosion from environmental forces and structural defects of the concrete. Cathodic protection (CP) was invented to prevent problems with corrosion and is widely used for different applications. Cathodic protection is divided into two types: sacrificial anode cathodic protection (SACP) and impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP). There are several limitations to the use of sacrificial anode cathodic protection in complex reinforced concrete structures, including concrete resistivity, throwing power of the CP, and environmental conditions. These limitations can affect the protection performance of SACP. Therefore, we used impressed current cathodic protection in our study. We tested Ti-Mesh, Ti-Rod, and Ti-Ribbon anodes in slab type reinforced concrete specimens. Electrochemical tests were conducted to confirm the impressed current cathodic protection performance under different environmental conditions.
In this study, the flexural behavior of steel fiber reinforced ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) was investigated. It presents experimental results of steel fiber reinforced UHPC with steel fiber content of 2% by volume and steel reinforcement ratio of less than 0.02. This study aims at providing more information about UHPC beams in bending in order to establish a reasonable prediction model for flexural resistance and deflection in structural code in the future. The experimental results show that UHPC is in favor of cracking behavior and ductility of beams, and that the ductility indices range from 6.29 to 10.44, which means high ductility of UHPC. Also, the flexural rigidity of beam whose cast is begun from end of beam is larger than that of beam whose cast is begun from midspan of beam. This result represents that the flexural rigidity is affected by the placing method of UHPC.

In this paper, actual bridges constructed with SMA (Stone Mastic Asphalt) deck pavement and virtual bridges substituted the deck pavement with polymer concrete under the same conditions were statically analyzed to investigate applicability of the thin polymer concrete bridge deck pavements. PSC (prestressed Concrete) girder bridge, steel box girder bridge, PSC box girder bridge, and RC (Reinforced Concrete) rahmen bridge constructed with the SMA deck pavement were analyzed and compared to evaluate various types of the bridge. The bridge deck and pavement were assumed to be fully bonded and the stress and deformation during the construction were ignored while those due to pavement weight and vehicle loading were analyzed. According to the analysis results, the stress and deformation of the bridges using the polymer concrete due to the pavement weight were smaller than those using the SMA because of smaller self weight due to lighter unit weight and thinner thickness of the pavement. The stress and deformation of the bridges using the polymer concrete due to the vehicle loading were larger than those using the SMA because of the smaller area moment of inertia due to the thinner pavement thickness. In case that the pavement weight and vehicle loading applied simultaneously, the stress and deformation of the bridges using the polymer concrete were smaller because effect of self weight reduction was more dominant. Investigation of performance of the bridge deck pavement and analysis of economical efficiency are warranted.
Precast-cast insitu concrete bridge construction is widely practiced for small to medium span structures. These bridges consist of precast pre-stressed concrete beams of various cross-sections with a cast in-situ reinforced concrete slab. The connection between the beams and the slab is via shear links often included during the manufacturing process of the beams. This form of construction is attractive as it provides for standardisation, reduced formwork and construction time. The assessment of the integrity of shear connectors in existing bridges is a major challenge. A procedure for assessment of shear connectors based on vibration testing and finite element model updating is proposed. The technique is applied successfully to a scaled model bridge model and an existing bridge structure.
