  • An experimental and numerical investigation was made to examine the characteristics of pontoon type floating breakwaters(FBW) in regular waves. Motion responses of FBW and wave transmission coefficients are observed and compared with the results based on the linear potential theory. The linear potential theory is found to be a successful tool to investigate the characteristics of the floating breakwaters. We confirm that there exists a minimum wave transmission coefficient which is a function of wave-length/beam and beam/draft ratio. As beam/draft ratio increases the value of wave-length/beam ratio where the minimum, wave transmission coefficient occurs increases. Excessive mooring stiffness can deteriorate the performance of the floating breakwaters.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to determine the dynamic optimal shapes of simple beam-columns with the constant volume. The parabolic function is chosen as the variable equation for the depth of regular polygon cross-section. The ordinary differential equation including the effect of axial load is applied to calculate the natural frequencies. The Runge-Kutta and Regula-Falsi methods are used to integrate the differential equation and compute the frequencies, respectively. Then the dynamic optimal shape whose lowest natural frequency is highest is determined by reading the critical value of the frequency versus section ratio curve plotted by the frequency data. In the numerical examples, the simple beam-columns are analysed and the numerical results of this study are shown in tables and figures.

  • This paper proposed a discrete wavelet transform based method for time-varying physical parameter identification of shear type structures. The time-varying physical parameters are dispersed and expanded at multi-scale as profile and detail signal using discrete wavelet basis. To reduce the number of unknown quantity, the wavelet coefficients that reflect the detail signal are ignored by setting as zero value. Consequently, the time-varying parameter can be approximately estimated only using the scale coefficients that reflect the profile signal, and the identification task is transformed to an equivalent time-invariant scale coefficient estimation. The time-invariant scale coefficients can be simply estimated using regular least-squares methods, and then the original time-varying physical parameters can be reconstructed by using the identified time-invariant scale coefficients. To reduce the influence of the ill-posed problem of equation resolving caused by noise, the Tikhonov regularization method instead of regular least-squares method is used in the paper to estimate the scale coefficients. A two-story shear type frame structure with time-varying stiffness and damping are simulated to validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method. It is demonstrated that the identified time-varying stiffness is with a good accuracy, while the identified damping is sensitive to noise.

  • The primary wave energy conversion by a three-dimensional bottom-mounted oscillating water column (OWC) wave power device in regular waves has been studied. The linear potential boundary value problem has been solved following the boundary matching method. The optimum shape parameters such as the chamber length and the depth of the front skirt of the OWC chamber obtained through two-dimensional numerical tests in the frequency domain have been applied in the design of the present OWC chamber. Time-mean wave power converted by the OWC device and the time-mean second-order wave forces on the OWC chamber structure have been presented for different wave incidence angles in the frequency-domain. It has been shown that the peak period of $P_m$ for the optimum damping parameter coincides with the peak period of the time.mean wave drift force when ${\gamma}=0$.

  • We propose a block motion estimation algorithm based on a statistical image feature for video sequences. The statistical feature of the reference block is obtained, then applied to select the candidate starting points (SPs) in the regular starting points pattern (SPP) by comparing the statistical feature of reference block with that of blocks which are spread ower regular SPP. The final SPs are obtained by their Mean Absolute Difference(MAD) value among the candidate SPs. Finally, one of conventional fast search algorithms, such as BRGDS, DS, and three-step search (TSS), has been applied to generate the motion vector of reference block using the final SPs as its starting points. The experimental results showed that the starting points from fine SPs were as dose as to the global minimum as we expected.

  • A numerical analysis for large amplitude motions of submerged circular cylinder is presented. The method is based on potential theory and two-dimensional motions in regular harmonic waves are tented as an initial value problem. The fully nonlinear free surface boundary condition is assumed in an inner domain and this solution is matched along an assumed an assumed common boundary to a linear solution in outer domain. Calculations of the large amplitude motion of a submerged circular cylinder are directly simulated in time domain. It is shown that relative motion between the body and fluid particle gives a significant effect on the lift and drift motions.

  • Non coating type Low melting yarn(L/M PET) not to use the polyurethane resin causing some problems was knitting and evaluated its dyeing characteristics, heat setting properties and flame-retardant properties without flame retardant agent or flame retardant fabric. In order to investigate the dyeing property of fabric of L/M PET, the dyeing of L/M PET was experimented at each different dyeing temperature. Higher exhaustion yield was achieved at lower temperature of L/M PET compared to regular PET. According to result of the study for the heat setting properties of L/M fiber, the K/S value of dyed L/M fiber increased as much as the heat setting temperature did. The experiment for the light fastness reached similar result to dyed PET. However washing fastness in L/M fiber showed lower grade compared with regular PET. flame-retardant efficiency of L/M PET without flame retardant agent or flame retardant fabric measured by $45^{\circ}$ burn test and Contact burn test. The flame?retardant performance of the sample was carried out according to the Korea Fire-fighting Standard.[KOFEIS 1001].

  • This study was designed to assess the distribution of cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) polymorphism among Korean patients on warfarin therapy. CYP2E1 polymorphism was analyzed at 5' flanking region of CYP2E1 gene using restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Patient characteristics including the measured internal normalized ratio (INR) were also evaluated. Based on the warfarin dose and the bleeding cases, the patients were grouped as the regular dose control, the regular dose bleeding, the low dose control, and the low dose bleeding. Total 96 patients were evaluated for both Pst I and Rsa I loci of the CYP2E1 gene and the results showed that both loci were tightly linked. Thirty-three patients(34.4%) were heterozygotes and 4 patients(4.2%) were homozygote. There was no significant difference in patient characteristics in the dose and bleeding case groups. CYP2E1 polymorphism showed a little difference among the groups but was not statistically significant, however, lower INR value was observed in homozygote genotype groups. It was also revealed that genotype allele frequencies of CYP2E1 in Korean was close to other Asian groups but was significantly different from other Caucasian and African-American populations.

  • Objective : The factors that influence the prognosis of patients with hemifacial spasm (HFS) treated by microvascular decompression (MVD) have not been definitely established. We report a prospective study evaluating the prognostic factors in patients undergoing MVD for HFS. Methods : From January 2004 to September 2006, the authors prospectively studied a series of 293 patients who underwent MVD for HFS. We prospectively analyzed a number of variables in order to evaluate the predictive value of independent variables for the prognosis of patients undergoing MVD. The patients were followed-up at regular intervals and divided into as cured and unsatisfactory groups based on symptom relief. Uni- and multivariate analyses were performed using logistic regression models. Results : A total 273 of 293 (94.2%) patients achieved symptom relief within one year after the operation. Intraoperatively, the indentation of the root exit zone was observed in 259 (88.5%) patients. Uni- and multivariate analyses revealed that the symptoms at postoperative 3 months (p<0.001) and indentation of the root exit zone (p=0.036) were associated with good outcomes. Conclusion : The intraoperative finding of root exit zone indentation will help physicians determine the prognosis in patients with HFS. To predict the prognosis of HFS, a regular follow-up period of at least 3 months following MVD should be required.
