We demonstrate a transflective liquid crystal display (LCD), doped with a chiral agent to produce a low helical twisting power, in a multimode configuration consisting of the homogeneous alignment and the hybrid alignment. The multimode transflective LCD with a single cell gap was fabricated using a single-step photoalignment technique with a self-masking process of an array of metal reflectors in the reflective region. In our configuration, the electro-optical disparity between the transmissive region and the reflective region was found to be significantly reduced by the low helical twisting power of the chiral dopant.

Optical conditions of a reflective multicolor STM-LCD based on the electrical control of birefrignece are analyzed on the CIE chromaticity diagram. The luminance and the area of the locus on the cIE chromaticity diagram are the two factors to be considered in the design of an LC cell to display white, red, green, and blue. The characteristics of a test cell agrees well with numerical simulation. A completed 320$\times$240 module is addressed by a designed PWM driving circuit.

We demonstrate a hybrid device with high ambien t-contrast-ratio (>133.8:1) under any ambient co nditions by vertically integrating a reflective LCD and a transparent OLED. The twisted nematic LC cell is placed beneath the OLED to improve dev ice transmittance by 53.8% due to the asymmet ric emission from both-sides of the transparent OLED.

A flexible reflective cholesteric liquid crystal display (ChLCD) is fabricated on plastic substrates by using the pixel isolation method. The polymer walls between pixels and the polymer layers in the pixels are formed by two-step UV irradiation. Electro-optical response of the ChLCD with polymer wall and layer is studied and compared with conventional bistable ChLCD cells.

최근에 많이 사용되는 휴대용 기기의 표시장치인 액정표시장치(LCD)에는 반사형이 많이 사용되고 있다. 반사형 LCD는 전력소모의 많은 부분을 차지하는 backlight를 주변광원으로 대체하여 전력소모를 줄일 수 있는 표시장치로 많이 연구되고 있다. 특히, 반사형 LCD는 밝기면에서 우수한 single-polarizer mode가 적합하다$^{1.3}$ . 그러나 single-polarizer mode는 two-polarizer mode와 비교해서 dark 상태에서의 누설광이 많이 발생하여 대비비가 저하되는 단점이 있다. 이 점을 보완하기 위하여 전 파장 영역에서 편광판에 의해 반사광이 차단될 수 있도록 설계를 했다. 본논문에서는 반강유전성 액정의 in-plane tilt 각이 약 $22.5^{\circ}C$인 특성을 가진다는 것을 이용하여 액정의 위상지연을 $\lambda/2$로 설계한 광대역 $\lambda/4$필름을 사용한 단일 편광판 모드 반사형 LCD의 구조를 제안하였으며 이구조의 여러 가지 광특석을 전사모사 해보았다. 실제 실험에서는 in-plane tilt 각이 $\24.9\lambda$인 Chisso상의 CS-4001 반강유전성 액정을 사용하여 액정 셀의 위상지연을 $\lambda/2$로 설계하여 각도에 따른 반사특성과 파장에 따른 분광특성을 측정하였다.

We have developed new reflective LCD for Mixed twist nematic LC mode with high quality image. We have found out an optimal twist angle of LC and optical film's axis by simulation. Also we measured electro-optic characteristics for new design panel. As a result, high reflectance and wide viewing angle characteristics were achieved.

본 논문에서는 LCD의 설계, 해석, 평가를 위한 시뮬레이션용 프로그램을 개발하였다. 본 프로그램은 액정 배향, 광투과율, 휘도, CONTRAST, 응답시간, 색좌표, 시야 각 특성등을 계산한다. 경사 입사광에 관한 해석은 확장된 2${\times}$2 행렬법으로 자체 개발하여 계산한다. 또한, 이 프로그램은 LCD 구조물의 최적 설치조건을 계산하는 기능도 갖는다. 이에 의하여 애정 표준화 작업관련 데이타 비교, B/W STN, TFT 등의 측정결과와 시뮬레이션 결과의 비교를 하였다.
