Seabed multiple reflections (seabed multiples) are the main cause of misinterpretations of primary reflections in both shot gathers and stack sections. Accordingly, seabed multiples need to be suppressed throughout data processing. Conventional model-driven methods, such as prediction-error deconvolution, Radon filtering, and data-driven methods, such as the surface-related multiple elimination technique, have been used to attenuate multiple reflections. However, the vast majority of processing workflows require time-consuming steps when testing and selecting the processing parameters in addition to computational power and skilled data-processing techniques. To attenuate seabed multiples in seismic reflection data, input gathers with seabed multiples and label gathers without seabed multiples were generated via numerical modeling using the Marmousi2 velocity structure. The training data consisted of normal-moveout-corrected common midpoint gathers fed into a U-Net neural network. The well-trained model was found to effectively attenuate the seabed multiples according to the image similarity between the prediction result and the target data, and demonstrated good applicability to field data.
In land seismic exploration, irregular surface topography and weathering layer in near surface distorts the reflected signals of data. Therefore, typical land seismic data should be compensated for this distortion by static correction. To perform the static correction, near-surface velocity is required, which can be obtained by seismic refraction survey. However, land seismic data is often acquired in a limited form of geometry depending on the equipment availability, accessibility condition, and permission for the survey site. In this situation, refraction analysis should be performed using reflection data because it is impossible to acquire refraction-oriented data due to limited source and receiver geometry. In this study, we aimed to analyze the reliability of the results obtained by refraction traveltime tomography when using reflection data with a limited number of sources and receivers from irregular surface topography. By comparing the inversion result from irregular topography with that from flat surface, we found that the surface topography affects the reliability of the inversion results to some degree. We also found that the number of sources has little effect on the inversion results unless the number of sources are very small. On the other hand, we observed that velocity distortion occurred in the overlapped part of receiver arrays when using a limited number of receivers, and therefore suggested the size of the least overlapping ratio to avoid the velocity distortion. Finally, we performed numerical tests for the model which simulates the surface topography and acquisition geometry of the survey region and verified the reliability analysis of inversion results. We identified reliable areas and suspicious area of the inverted velocity model by applying the analysis results to field data.
In order to find a good seismic source for high-resolution reflection surveys on a tidal flat, characteristic features of several sources were examined through test recording by the walkaway configuration. The sources comprise portable vibrator, 1.2 kg monkey spanner, 4.7 kg sledge hammer, and weight drops with a 30 kg and a 100 kg iron ball, respectively. We analyzed raw and filtered seismic data for the resolution of individual events, then compared various seismic sources to define suitable one for the high-resolution survey in terms of energy level and frequency contents. The study reveals that the portable vibrator is the most suitable source for the detection of and imaging geologic structures less than 20-30 m deep in a tidal flat. We ascribe this to the wide frequency band and high-frequency contents of the portable vibrator. In contrast, the hammer may be an alternative where the target depth increases up to 100 m.
The analysis of wide-angle seismic reflection and refraction data plays an important role in lithospheric-scale crustal structure study. However, it is extremely difficult to develop an appropriate velocity structure model directly from the observed data, and we have to improve the structure model step by step, because the crustal structure analysis is an intrinsically non-linear problem. There are several subjective processes in wide-angle crustal structure modelling, such as phase identification and trial-and-error forward modelling. Because these subjective processes in wide-angle data analysis reduce the uniqueness and credibility of the resultant models, it is important to reduce subjectivity in the analysis procedure. From this point of view, we describe two software tools, PASTEUP and MODELING, to be used for developing crustal structure models. PASTEUP is an interactive application that facilitates the plotting of record sections, analysis of wide-angle seismic data, and picking of phases. PASTEUP is equipped with various filters and analysis functions to enhance signal-to-noise ratio and to help phase identification. MODELING is an interactive application for editing velocity models, and ray-tracing. Synthetic traveltimes computed by the MODELING application can be directly compared with the observed waveforms in the PASTEUP application. This reduces subjectivity in crustal structure modelling because traveltime picking, which is one of the most subjective process in the crustal structure analysis, is not required. MODELING can convert an editable layered structure model into two-way traveltimes which can be compared with time-sections of Multi Channel Seismic (MCS) reflection data. Direct comparison between the structure model of wide-angle data with the reflection data will give the model more credibility. In addition, both PASTEUP and MODELING are efficient tools for handling a large dataset. These software tools help us develop more plausible lithospheric-scale structure models using wide-angle seismic data.
Multichannel deep seismic reflection data in the Main Pass area of the northern Gulf of Mexico are interpreted in this study for the stratigraphy and the depositional history. Structural analysis of deep seismic reflection data provides new information on the locations of paleo-shelf margins and the basement. The basement occurs at about $7.5{\cal}km$ depth at the northern end of seismic line LSU-1 in the Mississippi shelf. The Jurassic and early Cretaceous shelf margins occupy approximately the same position, whereas the Oligocene shelf margin occurs about 28 km farther landward. Ten major seismic stratigraphic sequences are identified for the Mesozoic and Cenozoic sed-imentary section. Correlation of sequence boundaries defined in this study with those in other areas of the circum-Gulf region indicates that majo. regional unconformities formed at the mid-Miocene (10.5 Ma), mid-Oligocene (30 Ma), mid-Cretaceous (97 Ma), and top-Jurassic (131 Ma). Three distinct periods a.e recognized in the depositional history of the Main Pass area of the northern Gulf of Mexico: (1) shallow ma.me deposition du.ins the period from the opening of the Gulf to the mid-Cretaceous, (2) deep marine deposition in the Cretaceous to the mid-Oligocene, and (3) shallow marine deposition prevailed since the mid-Oligocene to present. A comparison of depositional rates between the Main Pass area and the Destin Dome area indicates that the northern Gulf of Mexico continental margin was initiated as a terrigenous sediment wedge province in the late Cretaceous.
A multichannel seismic survey was conducted in the southern Ayu Trough which is the only spreading boundary between the Philippine Sea and Caroline plates. The seismic system used in this study comprises of 2.46-l sleeve gun and a 12-channel streamer with a group interval of 6.25m. Migration technique was used to analyze seismic velocity, and poststack depth migration was applied to the stacked data. The sediment thickness obtained from the depth section tends to increase with distance from the spreading axis. Sedimentation rates are poorly constrainted in the study area. The apparent half-spreading rates estimated from the sediment thickness and sedimentation rate from DSDP hole on the caroline plate are 4.7mm/yr and 7.9mm/yr at $1^{\circ}24'N\;and\;0^{\circ}42'N$, respectively, which are fester than Previously suggested. On the basis of new oblique spreading geometry, the recalculated spreading rates are 5.4mm/yr and 9.1mm/yr at $1^{\circ}24'N\;and\;0^{\circ}42'N$, respectively. Seismic sections show that the topography is asymmetric across the Ayu Trough and the acoustic basement is rough. These features are consistent with the earlier suggestion that the Ayu Trough is a slow-spreading divergent boundary. A detailed examination of seismic profiles away from the axis shows that sediments can be divided into two layers which implies a possible change in the spreading rate anuor sedimentation condition during the formation of the trough.
A land nodal seismic system was employed to acquire seismic reflection data using stand-alone cable-free receivers in a land-river area. Acquiring reliable data using this technology is very cost effective, as it avoids topographic problems in the deployment and collection of receivers. The land nodal airgun system deployed on the mouth of the Hyungsan River (in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk Province) used airgun sources in the river and receivers on the riverbank, with subparallel source and receiver lines, approximately 120 m-spaced. Seismic data collected on the riverbank are characterized by a low signal-to-noise (S/N) and inconsistent reflection events. Most of the events are represented by hyperbola in the field records, including direct waves, guided waves, air waves, and Scholte surface waves, in contrast to the straight lines in the data collected conventionally where source and receiver lines are coincident. The processing strategy included enhancing the signal behind the low-frequency large-amplitude noise with a cascaded application of bandpass and f-k filters for the attenuation of air waves. Static time delays caused by the cross-offset distance between sources and receivers are corrected, with a focus on mapping the shallow reflections obscured by guided wave and air wave noise. A new time-distance equation and curve for direct and air waves are suggested for the correction of the static time delay caused by the cross-offset between source and receiver. Investigation of the minimum cross-offset gathers shows well-aligned shallow reflections around 200 ms after time-shift correction. This time-delay static correction based on the direct wave is found essential to improving the data from parallel source and receiver lines. Data acquisition and processing strategies developed in this study for land nodal airgun seismic systems will be readily applicable to seismic data from land-sea areas when high-resolution signal data becomes available in the future for investigation of shallow gas reservoirs, faults, and engineering designs for the development of coastal areas.

Most of seismic reflection prospecting assumes subsurface formation to be homogeneous media. These models are not capable of estimating small scale heterogeneity which is verified by well log data or drilling core. And those synthetic seismograms by homogeneous media are limited to explain various changes at field data. So we developed a inhomogeneous velocity model which can estimate inhomogeneity of background medium to implement numerical modeling from homogeneous medium and inhomogeneous medium on the model. Background medium using three autocorrelation functions in order to generate inhomogeneous velocity media was according to dominant wavelength of background medium and correlation length of random medium. And then we compared shot gathers. The results show that numerical modeling implemented at inhomogeneous medium depicts complex wave propagation of field data.
The static correction, which is classified into refraction based static correction and reflection based residual static correction, removes distortions caused by irregularities of thickness or velocity in near-surface. Generally, refraction statics is a time consuming process because of high dependence on the interpreter's analysis. Therefore, for huge 3D seismic data, automatic static correction which minimizes the interpreter's analysis is required. In this research, we introduce an efficient method of refraction static correction for land 3D seismic survey.

This paper presents a technique to determine anisotropic elastic coefficients from traveltimes of seismic reflections or vertical seismic profiling (VSP) in tranversely isotropic layers whose thicknesses are known. The elastic coefficients are calculated from three different velocities (vertical, horizontal and skew velocities) which are determined from skew hyperbolic traveltimes by least-square fitting or semblance analysis. This interpretation technique is tested for synthetic traveltime data obtained for transversely isotropic models. The test shows that the anisotropic elastic constants of the models are determined accurately by this interpretation method.
