  • A dynamic model was applied to compare the environmental parameters and effluent characteristics of refinery wastewater in activated sludge treatment. The measured DO, pH, MLSS, and COD values were compared with the simulated their results in the activated sludge reactor. As results of simulation. good agreements between the measured and simulated results were investigated. The simulated and measured effluent COD were 19.0~19.4mg/L and 23.1mg/L. respectively. The simulated and measured DO were 1.9~2.4mg/L and 2.2mg/L. respectively.

  • Hazardous air pollutants emitted from the oil refinery plant were surveyed from 1993 US and 2005 Korean TRI data. Toluene, xylene, methanol, MTBE and n-hexane, relatively large in amount of fugitive emission, are considered as candidates of newly designated HAPs in Korea. The sealed oil pump, one of equipments among fugitive sources in the crude oil distillation tower was examined for the estimation of amounts of annual HAPs emissions according to several calculation methods using registered emission factors. Emission rates showed to be decreased with following calculation factors; average emission factor>pegged emission factor>concentration emission factor>correlation equation. Annual emission amounts of benzene, toluene, xylene. ethyl benzene and nhexane from the distillation tower were estimated and amounts of these HAPs calculated with TVOC concentrations obtained from LDAR program and correlation equations showed only 6% of those from using concentration factors.

  • Nowadays, it is a global trend to build refinery or chemical plants with an isolated system in a place distant from the center of a city. In the refinery or chemical plants equipped with an isolated system, induced motors mostly take the load, and the scale of high-voltage electric motors reaches from several kW up to several MW. Therefore, it is needed to examine the effects of electric motors on the power system closely in the stages of planning and designing a plant to build a stable power system. This study is aimed to investigate how to decide rated voltage in consideration of stability which has not been considered in the stages of planning and designing so far in order to secure stability for the power system.

  • The application of advanced oxidation for the treatment of oil refinery wastewater under UV radiation by using nanoparticles of titanium dioxide was investigated. Synthetic wastewater prepared from phenol crystals; Power Glide SAE40 motor vehicle oil and water was used. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on the Box-Behnken design was employed to design the experimental runs, optimize and study the interaction effects of the operating parameters including catalyst concentration, run time and airflow rate to maximize the degradation of oil (SOG) and phenol. The analysis of variance and the response models developed were used to evaluate the data obtained at a 95% confidence level. The use of the RSM demonstrated the graphical relationship that exists between individual factors and their interactive effects on the response, as compared to the one factor at time approach. The obtained optimum conditions of photocatalytic degradation are the catalyst concentration of 2 g/L, the run time of 30 min and the airflow rate of 1.04 L/min. Under the optimum conditions, a 68% desirability performance was obtained, representing 81% and 66% of SOG and phenol degradability, respectively. Thus, the hydrocarbon oils were readily degradable, while the phenols were more resistant to photocatalytic degradation.

  • In this work, treatment of real hypersaline refinery wastewater by hollow fiber membrane bioreactor coupled with reverse osmosis unit was studied. The ability of HF-MBR and RO developed in this work, was evaluated through examination of the effluent properties under various operating conditions including hydraulic retention time and flux. Arak refinery wastewater was employed as influent of the bioreactor which consists of an immersed ultrafiltation membrane. The HF-MBR/RO was run for 6 months. Average elimination performance of chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, total suspended solids, volatile suspended solids, total dissolved soild and turbidity were obtained 82%, 89%, 98%, 99%, 99% and 98% respectively. Highly removal performance of oily contaminant, TDS and the complete retention of suspends solids implies good potential of the HF-MBR/RO system for wastewater refinement.

  • With the increasing demand for enzymes in industrial applications there is a growing need to easily produce industrially important microbial enzymes. This study was carried out to screen the indigenous refinery bacterial isolates for their production of two industrially important enzymes i.e. lipase and protease. A total of 15 bacterial strains were isolated using Soil Extract Agar media from the oil-contaminated environment and one was shown to produce high quality lipase and protease enzymes. The culture conditions (culture duration, temperature, source of nitrogen, carbon, and pH) were optimized to produce the optimum amount of both the lipase (37.6 ± 0.2 Uml-1) and the protease (41 ± 0.4 Uml-1) from this isolate. Productivity of both enzymes was shown to be maximized at pH 7.5 in a medium containing yeast extract and peptone as nitrogen sources and sucrose and galactose as carbon sources when incubated at 35 ± 1℃ for 48 h. Bacterial strain SAB06 was identified as Bacillus licheniformis (MT250345) based on biochemical, morphological, and molecular characteristics. Further studies are required to evaluate and optimize the purification and characterization of these enzymes before they can be recommended for industrial or environmental applications.

  • Field experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of wollastonite and iron refinery slag on the paddy rice yield insandyloam soil in which available silica level is 56 ppm. The results are as follows: 1. Application of wollastonite and iron refinery slag reduced the tillering and the height of rice plant in the early growth stage, while promoted those in the late growth stage. 2. As the same amounts of wollastonite and iron refinery slag were applied, the effectiveness on yield increase was same between the two silicate fertilizers. 3. The recovery ratio as measured by absorbed $SiO_2$ on rice plant over applied $SiO_2$, was greater in wollastonite than in iron refinery slag. 4. The increasing of the ratio of $SiO_2$ over N absorbed in rice plant trends toward decreasing the infection rate of neck blast. 5. The left-over ratio of available $SiO_2$ in soil over applied $SiO_2$, was greater in iron refinery slag than in wollastonite. 6. As measured by silica soluble in 0.5 N-HCl solution, 1 kg application per 10a of both silicate fertilizers increased about 2.3 ppm in soil silica content after harvest, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to find out the analysis condition of selenium(Se) in oil refinery wastewater with a high concentration of Se using the atomic absorption spectrometry with hydride generation system (HG-AAS). From various experiments that reduced Se(VI) to Se(IV), the optimum pretreatment condition was determined to be a sample volume of 10 mL, HCl 10 mL, with a 30 min heating time in a water bath. In oil refinery wastewater, as the concentration of organics and constitution became higher, the recovery rates of Se decreased. Therefore, three acid digestion methods ($HNO_3/HClO_4$ digestion, $KMnO_4$ digestion, and microwave acid digestion) were tested on the recovery rates of Se in reference to the digestion of organics, petroleum and oxidation from organic Se(org.), Se(IV) to Se(VI). The experiment results showed that the average recovery rate of Se was the highest in microwave acid digestion, although all of the digestions were more than 90%. In consequence, the pretreatment procedure of microwave digestion followed by HCl addition was the most suitable for selenium analysis in oil refinery wastewater by using HG-AAS.
