This paper deals with the aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic trade-off analysis of a hypersonic flying test bed. Such vehicle will have to be launched with an expendable launcher and shall re-enter the Earth atmosphere allowing to perform several experiments on critical re-entry phenomena. The demonstrator under study is a re-entry space glider characterized by a relatively simple vehicle architecture able to validate hypersonic aerothermodynamic design database and passenger experiments, including thermal shield and hot structures. A summary review of the aerodynamic characteristics of two flying test bed concepts, compliant with a phase-A design level, has been provided hereinafter. Several design results, based both on engineering approach and computational fluid dynamics, are reported and discussed in the paper.

In general, 3-dimensional point-mass equation has been widely used for the trajectory optimization of the fixed-wing aircraft and reentry vehicle. But it should be modified and represent target vehicle's own characteristics. For a lighter-than-air vehicle such as an airship, there exists different and peculiar flight characteristics compared with the aircraft. The first part of this paper is to derive the dynamic equation of motion for the mid-altitude unmanned airship and the second part is to obtain the optimal trajectories under the minimal time flight given constraints. The trajectory optimization problem is converted into the nonlinear programming problem using Sequential Quadratic Programming approach. Finally numerical solutions are presented in the last part of the paper.
In this paper, we present a new guidance law for a reusable launch vehicle (RLV) that lands vertically after reentry. In our past studies, a guidance law was developed for a vertical/soft landing to a target point. The guidance law, which is analytically obtained, can regenerate a trajectory against disturbances because it is expressed in the form of state feedback. However, the guidance law does not necessarily guarantee a vertical/soft landing when a dynamical system such as an RLV includes a nonlinear phenomenon owing to the atmosphere of the earth. In this study, we introduce a design of the guidance law for a nonlinear system to achieve a vertical/soft landing on the ground using the exact linearization method and solving the two-point boundary-value problem for the derived linear system. Numerical simulation confirmed the validity of the proposed guidance law for an RLV in an atmospheric environment.

The time implicit point SGS scheme is applied to compute hypersonic viscous flows in thermochemical nonequilibrium. The performance of the point SGS scheme is then compared with those of the line SGS and the LU-SGS schemes. Comparison of convergence histories with the effect of multiple forward and backward sweeps are made for the flow over a 2D cylinder experimentally studied by Hornung and the flow over a hemisphere at conditions corresponding to the peak heating condition during the reentry flight of an SSTO vehicle. Results indicate that the point SGS scheme with multiple sweeps is as robust and efficient as the line SGS scheme. For the point SGS and the LU-SGS scheme, the rate of improvement in convergence is largest with two sweep cycles. However, for the line SGS scheme, it is found that more than one sweep cycle deteriorates the convergence rate.

In this review an attempt is made to give the background to the current trends in foreign developments in the ceramic matrix composites for space vehicles. The lightweight and high temperature specific modulus properties of ceramic composites have continued to develop for designing advanced propulsion structures and for increasing space vehicle performances. Those applications require advanced materials with good resistance to high temperatures, to oxidation environments and to mechanical stresses. The advantages of ceramic matrix composites are the low specific weight, the high specific strength over a wide temperature ranges, and their good damage tolerance compared to tungsten, pyrographites and polycrystalline graphites. Due to these advantages ceramic matrix composites are currently used in rocket engine chamber, nozzle, solar array, radar antenna, mirror support structures, hypersonic leading edge articles, heat shields, reentry vehicle nose tips, and radiators for spacecraft. Various processes are discussed together with examples of current application so that some of the advanced technologies can be possibly applied to Korean space technology.
Space launch vehicles and reentry vehicles are exposed to extreme heating conditions due to high aerodynamic heating while flying at high Mach numbers in the atmosphere. To protect the vehicle itself or the payload from the aerodynamic heating, the thermal load imposed on the surface should be exactly predicted and proper thermal protection should be applied based on the prediction results. But this requires rigorous thermal analysis and testing to prevent loss of payload capacity caused by excessive heat shielding, and the amount of thermal protection material to be applied is determined through aerodynamic heating tests. Various design points to be considered to upgrade the prototype aerodynamic thermal simulation facility(ATSF) used for the KSR-series sounding rocket development to the one suitable for the KSLV(Korean Space Launch Vehicle)-series launch vehicle are considered in this research. The need and limitation for the facility are first considered, and the functions required for KSLV testing are determined. The specifications of the upgraded facility are briefly suggested and these results will be used for the future fabrication and installation of the facility.

Various studies have been conducted for drag reduction of a high-speed vehicle by injecting counterflow jet from its nose cone. In this study, in order to obtain baseline data and key parameters for drag reduction method, the counterflow jet study of the USA is reviewed and summarized. The nose cone shapes of each study are hemisphere cylinder, truncated cone, and reentry capsule, and their test conditions are summarized accordingly. Key parameters for drag reduction are jet mach number, mass flow rate, and pressure ratio. Even though drag reduction effects show various results according to given test conditions, it is found that the drag reduction effect reaches up to 40~50%.

Ground-based interceptors(GBI) comprise a major element of the strategic defense against hostile targets like Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles(ICBM) and reentry vehicles(RV) dispersed from them. An optimum design of the subsystems is required to increase the performance and reliability of these GBI. Propulsion subsystem design and optimization is the motivation for this effort. This paper describes an effort in which an entire GBI missile system, including a multi-stage solid rocket booster, is considered simultaneously in a Genetic Algorithm(GA) performance optimization process. Single goal, constrained optimization is performed. For specified payload and miss distance, time of flight, the most important component in the optimization process is the booster, for its takeoff weight, time of flight, or a combination of the two. The GBI is assumed to be a multistage missile that uses target location data provided by two ground based RF radar sensors and two low earth orbit(LEO) IR sensors. 3Dimensional model is developed for a multistage target with a boost phase acceleration profile that depends on total mass, propellant mass and the specific impulse in the gravity field. The monostatic radar cross section (RCS) data of a three stage ICBM is used. For preliminary design, GBI is assumed to have a fixed initial position from the target launch point and zero launch delay. GBI carries the Kill Vehicle(KV) to an optimal position in space to allow it to complete the intercept. The objective is to design and optimize the propulsion system for the GBI that will fulfill mission requirements and objectives. The KV weight and volume requirements are specified in the problem definition before the optimization is computed. We have considered only continuous design variables, while considering discrete variables as input. Though the number of stages should also be one of the design variables, however, in this paper it is fixed as three. The elite solution from GA is passed on to(Sequential Quadratic Programming) SQP as near optimal guess. The SQP then performs local convergence to identify the minimum mass of the GBI. The performance of the three staged GBI is validated using a ballistic missile intercept scenario modeled in Matlab/SIMULINK.
