  • In order to expanding of the use of steel slag, a by-product of steel industry, as a road paving construction material, this present study confirmed the possibility of the rust formation of steel slag aggregate and evaluated the durability performance and the noise reduction characteristics of asphalt concrete mixture. As a result of conducting the rust formation test of aggregate, no rust was observed in both aggregate, so it is judged that the possibility of rust formation in the actual road water environment is very low. As a result of performing the moisture resistance test, all mixtures showed a tensile strength ratio exceeding 85%, satisfied the standard as asphalt mixture. In addition, the sound absorption coefficient of the steel slag aggregate mixture was measured to be higher than that of the general aggregate mixture. Accordingly, it is speculated th at th e steel slag aggregate mixture can more effectively respond to road noise reduction than the general mixture.

  • In this paper, the performance of air pollution reduction by coating the photocatalyst solution on the mortar surface was analyzed to ensure the possibility of applying the photocatalyst to structures with a large specific surface area. The photocatalytic concentrations of the coating solution were set to 1.5 % and 3.0 %, and the types of binders were considered as experimental variables, such as ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), ordinary portland cement (OPC), and blast furnace slag. As the photocatalyst concentration increases, the air pollution reduction performance increases. In addition, as a result of the air pollution reduction performance, the NOx concentration reduction rate was the highest for UHPC, and the air pollution reduction performance increased as the blast furnace slag was replaced. Therefore, the amount of TiO2 remaining on the surface varies depending on the density of the tissue due to the difference in particles caused by the difference in the amount of TiO2 remaining on the surface.

  • Mineral carbonation for the storage of carbon dioxide is a CCS option that provides an alternative for the more widely advocated method of geological storage in underground formation. Carbonation of magnesium- or calcium-based minerals, especially the carbonation of waste materials and industrial by-products is expanding, even though total amounts of the industrial waste are too small to substantially reduce the $CO_2$ emissions. The mineral carbonation was performed with steelmaking reduction slag as starting material. The steelmaking reduction slag dissolution experiments were conducted in the $H_2SO_4$ and $NH_4NO_3$ solution with concentration range of 0.3 to 1 M at $100^{\circ}C$ and $150^{\circ}C$. The hydrothermal treatment was performed to the starting material via a modified direct aqueous carbonation process at the same leaching temperature. The initial pH of the solution was adjusted to 12 and $CO_2$ partial pressure was 1MPa for the carbonation. The carbonation rate after extracting $Ca^^{2+}$ under $NH_4NO_3$ was higher than that under $H_2SO_4$ and the carbonation rates in 1M $NH_4NO_3$ solution at $150^{\circ}C$ was dramatically enhanced about 93%. In this condition well-faceted rhombohedral calcite, and rod or flower-shaped aragonite were appeared together in products. As the concentration of $H_2SO_4$ increased, the formation of gypsum was predominant and the carbonation rate decreased sharply. Therefore it is considered that the selection of the leaching solution which does not affect the starting material is important in the carbonation reaction.

  • The domestic, quantity of copper slag as a by-product at copper smelting process reaches 700,000 tons annually while its application is limited. Therefore, the secure disposal plan of copper slag is urgently required. For this reason, in this study, copper slag was used as a substitute for sand in Sand Compaction Pile that is one of the improvement methods of soft ground because the particle size distribution of copper slag ranges from 0.15mm to 5m(coarse state) and it maintains stable glassy state environmentally. The geotechnical characteristics of copper slag were evaluated through laboratory model tests and the field application of copper slag was compared with generally used sand by pilot tests. From these experimental results, copper slag's material characteristics, bearing capacity, settlement reduction and improvement effects of surrounding ground were found to be superior to generally used sand. The copper slag can be used as a substitute far sand in the Sand Compaction Pile method and as recycling material of industrial by-product with high econonical and environmental value when natural resources are being exhausted.

  • Generally, when using copper slag mixed into the concrete, due to higher weight of copper slag, a reduction in the compressive strength and durability of the hardened concrete to increased bleeding is caused. In this study, hence copper slag, a kind of by-product was used as an alternative to the fine aggregate, it was carried out in combination with the use of fly ash in eliminating disadvantage and recycling aspects. As a result of this study, the mixing of fly ash is decreased in the 50% of bleeding, 5% of drying shrinkage, 30% of carbonation test and improvement of 10% of compressive strength than that of copper slag only at most.

  • Concrete in water environment is easily subjected to the attack of leaching, which causes its mechanical reduction and durability deterioration, and the key to improving the leaching resistance of concrete is to increase the compaction of its microstructure formed by the curing. This paper performs a numerical investigation on the intrinsic relationship between microstructures formed by the hydration of cement and slag and leaching resistance of concrete in water environment. Firstly, a shrinking-core hydration model of blended cement and slag is presented, in which the interaction of hydration process of cement and slag is considered and the microstructure composition is characterized by the hydration products, solution composition and pore structure. Secondly, based on Fick's law and mass conservation law, a leaching model of hardened paste is proposed, in which the multi-species ionic diffusion equation and modified Gérard model are established, and the model is numerically solved by applying the finite difference method. Finally, two models are combined by microstructure composition to form an integrated curing-leaching model, and it is used to investigate the relationship between microstructure composition and leaching resistance of slag-blended cement pastes.

  • This study was conducted to fabrication pig iron containing copper and to reduce sulfur content pig iron. Roasting test was conducted for 1 ~ 9 hours at each temperature of $500^{\circ}C$, $700^{\circ}C$, and $900^{\circ}C$. In addition, the effect of oxygen partial pressure with 0.5, 0.8, and 1 atm was carried out for 30 minutes at $900^{\circ}C$. It was found that there is no effect to reduce sulfure in pig iron through roasting and oxygen partial pressures. The addition of CaO with 15 wt.% was found to reduce sulfur content up to 0.001 wt.%. The suitable temperature and reactive time for carbothermic reduction were $1600^{\circ}C$ and 30 minutes which shows the highest recovery rate of iron from the copper slag.

  • The purpose of this study is to recycle steel slag generated from the iron producing process and to use steel slag as a construction material which is currently landfilled Steel slag is subjected to aging treatment due to the problem of expansion and collapse when it reacts with water. The Slag Atomizing Technology (SAT) method developed to solve these problems of expanding collapse of steel slag. In this study, experimental study on the emergency repair mortar using the reducing slag, electric arc furnace slag and silicon manganese slag manufactured by the SAT method is Reduced slag was shown an accelerated hydration when it was replaced with rapidly-setting cement, and the rate of substitution was equivalent to 15%. It is shown that the electric furnace oxide slag is equivalent to 100% of the natural aggregate, and it can be replaced by 15-30% when the silicon manganic slag is substituted for the electric furnace oxide slag. With the above formulation, it was possible to design the rapidly repair mortar for road use. These recycling slags can contribute on achieving sustainability of construction industry by reducing the use of cement and natural aggregates and by reducing the generation of carbon dioxide and recycling waste slag.
