We investigated the hypoglycemic effect of formula containing Euonymus alatus (EA) and Mori Folium (MF) in multiple low dose (MLD) streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. In order to iduce hyperglycemic state 25 mg/kg of STZ was injected intraperitoneally for 5 consecutive days. SD rats were randomly divided into diabetic control and treatment groups. Treatment groups were administered with either 250 mg/kg of EA and 250 mg/kg of MF (E1Ml), or 500 mg/kg of EA mixed with same dose of MF (E2M2) for 3 weeks. Blood glucose levels and body weights were measured every 5th or 6th day. E1Ml and E2M2 both significantly reduced food intake, water intake, and fasting blood and urine glucose levels as compared to those in diabetic control group in a dose dependent manner. Body weight in diabetic control group was increased slightly after 3 weeks. Treatment group, however, showed gradual increase in body weights during 3 week-period. While plasma insulin levels of the diabetic control group were decreased to the level of 387$\pm$14 pg/ml from 534$\pm$36 pg/ml, those levels in E1Ml and E2M2-treated groups were both markedly increased by 13% and 26%, respectively. Urine glucose levels in E1Ml and E2M2-treated groups were also remarkably reduced by 17 and 26% compared to the levels of diabetic control group. While expression of membrane-bound glucose transporter-4 (GLUT-4) protein in skeletal muscle was reduced by 45% in diabetic control compared to the normal control, GLUT-4 protein expressions in E1Ml and E2M2-treated groups were augmented by 2 and 3.5 times compared to the diabetic control, respectively. Pancreatic HE staining experiments showed that E2M2-treated group revealed much less infiltrated mononuclear cells, indicating that E2M2 efficiently blocked insulitis induced by multiple low dose streptozotocin. Taken together, we conclude that formula containing EA and MF may prevent or delay the development of hyperglycemia through overexpression of GLUT-4 protein in skeletal muscle and prevention of insulitis.
The following conclusions are based upon data collected and visual observations made during the performance of the tests : 1. The performance of the erosion control products tested was for a particular set of conditions, and may be expected to differ if any or all of the test parameters were to be changed. If even just one parameter is changed from one test to the next, the results can be expected to be different. 2. Due to the fact that only two replications of each product were tested, we believe that the results presented herein are indicative only and not conclusive. 3. The ECB SC produced the least amount of soil erosion followed by ECB S, ECB C, and Coir No. 2, in that order. 4. All of the erosion control blankets tested significantly reduced soil erosion rates with respect to the bare soil controls. 5. The ECB S produced the smallest water runoff rate, followed closely by ECB SC. Next in order were ECB C and Coir No. 2. 6. All of the erosion control blankets reduced the water runoff rate with respect to the bare soil control. 7. Mesh 2cm There was not much difference in plant height for the four erosion control blankets and the bare soil control plots. the ECB S produced slightly taller plants than the rest of the materials tested. 8. The four erosion control blankets(ECB C, ECB SC, ECB S, and Coir No. 2) produced a larger plant mass than the bare soil plots. The difference between the plant mass for the four erosion control blankets, however, is minimal. 9. The ECB C produced the least percentage of lost seed and the largest percentage of germinating seed. 10. The ECB SC had the second smaller percentage of seed lost, followed closely by ECB S, and then by Coir No. 2. 11. All erosion control blankets had a smaller percentage of seed lost than the bare soil control plots. 12. The ECB C had the second largest percentage of germinating seed, followed closely by ECB SC and Coir No. 2. 13. All erosion control blankets had a larger percentage of germinating seed than the bare soil control plots. 14. The ECB C had the smallest percentage of non-germinating seed, followed by ECB S, Coir No. 2, and ECB SC, in that order. 15. All erosion control blankets had smaller percentages of non-germinating seed than the bare soil control plots.
The current study describes experimental and computational work on the passive control of the steady and unsteady condensation shock waves, which are generated in a transonic nozzle. The bleed slots are installed on the contoured wall of the transonic nozzle in order to control the magnitude of the condensation shock wave and its oscillations. For computations, a droplet growth equation is incorporated into the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation systems. Computations are carried out using a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme with a second-order tractional time step. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is employed to close the governing equations. An experiment using an indraft transonic wind tunnel is made to validate the computational results. The current computations represented well the experimental flows. From both the experimental and computational results it is found that the magnitude of the condensation shock wave in the bleed slotted nozzle is significantly reduced, compared with no passive control of solid wall. The oscillations of the condensation shock wave are successfully suppressed by a bleed slot system.

A new sliding mode control method based on the lower bound of control gain is presented. Although the magnitube of the proposed control input is larger than that of the conventional control input using both lower and upper bounds, the positive-negative exchanging chattering is reduced and reaching mode is shorter. Because the proposed scheme needs only the lower bound of control gain, it is applicable to the system whose upper bound of control gain is doubtful to determine such as the control gain depends on the system states. It is proved that the proposed control method guarantees the sliding condition. The analysis of differences between the conventional method and the proposed method is given. The validity of the proposed control strategy is shown through a 2nd-order nonlinear system example.
101 coding scheme, one of sliding block coding techniques, provides practically attractive features in some compression applications for image sources such as facsimile. This paper presents a new simple model of 101 coder. The results show that the entropy of the output of the 101 coder can be reduced close to the rate distortion bound of a binary first-order markov source.
Recently, the development of novel control methodology enables us to improve the performance of AC-machine drives by using pulse width modulation (PWM) technique. Usually, the dynamic characteristic of induction motor (IM) has been represented by the 5-th order nonlinear differential equation. This dynamics, however, can be reduced to 3-rd order dynamics by applying direct control of IM input current. This methodology concludes that it is much easier to control IM by means of the field-oriented methods employing the current controller. Therefore a precise current control is crucial to achieve a high control performance both in dynamic and steady state operations. This paper presents an adaptive fuzzy current controller with artificial neural network (ANN) for field-oriented controlled IM. This new control structure is able to adaptively minimize a current ripple while maintaining constant switching frequency. Especially the proposed controller employs neuro-computing philosophy as well as adaptive learning pattern recognizing principles with respect to variations of the system parameters. The proposed approach is applied to the IM drive system, and its performance is tested through various simulations. Simulation results show that the proposed system, compared among several known classical methods, has a superb performance.

To cope with the complex electromagnetic environment of wireless communication systems, anti-jamming decision methods are necessary to keep the reliability of communication. Basing on the rule-reduced genetic algorithm (RRGA), an anti-jamming decision method is proposed in this paper to adapt to the fast channel variations. Firstly, the reduced decision rules are obtained according to the rough set (RS) theory. Secondly, the randomly generated initial population of the genetic algorithm (GA) is screened and the individuals are preserved in accordance with the reduced decision rules. Finally, the initial population after screening is utilized in the genetic algorithm to optimize the communication parameters. In order to remove the dependency on the weights, this paper deploys an anti-jamming decision objective function, which aims at maximizing the normalized transmission rate under the constraints of minimizing the normalized transmitting power with the pre-defined bit error rate (BER). Simulations are carried out to verify the performance of both the traditional genetic algorithm and the adaptive genetic algorithm. Simulation results show that the convergence rates of the two algorithms increase significantly thanks to the initial population determined by the reduced-rules, without losing the accuracy of the decision-making. Meanwhile, the weight-independent objective function makes the algorithm more practical than the traditional methods.

Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) is one of the most important medicinal crops in many parts of the world. In this study, the effects of microelements, antioxidants, and bioagents on Fusarium oxysporum, F. solani, and Macrophomina phaseolina, the causal pathogens of root rot and wilt diseases in roselle, were examined under field conditions. Preliminary studies were carried out in vitro in order to select the most effective members to be used in field control trials. Our results showed that microelements (copper and manganese), antioxidants (salicylic acid, ascorbic acid, and EDTA), a fungicide (Dithane M45) and biological control agents (Trichoderma harzianum and Bacillus subtilis) were significantly reduced the linear growth of the causal pathogens. Additionally, application of the previous microelements, antioxidants, a fungicide and biological control agents significantly reduced disease incidence of root rot and wilt diseases under field conditions. Copper, salicylic acid, and T. harzianum showed the best results in this respect. In conclusion, microelements, antioxidants, and biocontrol agents could be used as alternative strategies to fungicides for controlling root rot and wilt diseases in roselle.
