Study on the Sedative Effect and the Anticonvulsive Effect of Incenses in Aroma Therapy (향기요법(분향)이 진정 및 항경련에 미치는 실험적 연구)

  • In order to prove the sedative, anticonvulsive effects of Incenses and to identify the effect of this medicine to cerebral glutamic acid and GABA density in experimental animal. we used Incense which was made of traditional herb medicines. We also examined what kind of material is to be involved in biosynthesis of these elements. In addition we experimented to find out synthesis of active GABA-T. Incenses were inhaled 8 hours a day for 4 weeks to mice. Finally we have following results. On the convulsion induced by pentylenetetrazole(PTZ), Incenses showed significant anticonvulsive effect. Density of glutamic acid in brain was significantly decreased. On the contrary, density of GABA was significantly increased. The Activity of GABA- T in brain was significantly reduced. The quantity of lipid peroxide in the brain was significantly decreased. Activity of xanthine oxidase and aldehyde oxidase were significantly reduced in brain. From the above results, we confirmed that Incenses decreased the density of glutamic acid, increased GABA density and decreased the activity of GABA- T in brain. For the convulsion which was induced by PTZ, Incenses showed significant anticonvulsive effect. With this we can recognize that Incenses had ability to control the quantity of lipid peroxide in brain. In the conclusion, Incenses has significant anticonvulsive effect, so I strongly recommend to prescribe Incenses to treat convulsive disorder like epilepsy.

  • A new technique for recycling process water was developed in order to reduce the calcium hardness of the closed OCC recycling system. Calcium ions present in the white water were precipitated as calcium carbonate by a reaction with sodium carbonate and the CaCO$_3$precipitates were easily removed from the system by a dissolved air flotation(DAF) method. After the DAF stage, CO$_2$-gas was purged into the water because the pH of Na$_2$CO$_3$-treated white water was reduced to neutral by CO$_2$gas. Since CaCO$_3$precipitate tends to stick onto the fine fiber surface and then is selectively removed from the water, a proper amount of suspended solid in the process water acts as an important factor in deciding the removal efficiency. By the application of Na$_2$CO$_3$addition - DAF - CO$_2$purging to the short circulated white water the calcium hardness was significantly reduced by 92% and more. The removal of calcium ions with fine fibers led to drainage improvement, reduction of fresh water consumption, and enhanced efficiency of wet-end chemicals.

Antioxidant and Hypoglycemic Activity of Polysaccharide from Tea

  • Tea polysaccharide had high antioxidant activity and it could be used to cure diabetes. Antioxidant activity of tea poly-saccharide (TPS) from three kinds of tea (green tea, oolong tea and black tea) were compared, the result indicated that oolong tea polysaccharide (OTPS) had the highest antioxidant activity. In order to explicate the mechanism of antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity, the streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes mice model (DM) was established. The influence of OTPS on blood-glucose, content of MDA and NO, and activities of GSH-PX, SOD, NOS in serum, kidney and liver were investigated. The result showed that after four weeks injection of OTPS to DM mice, the blood-glucose of three treatment group reduced by 14.5%,21.5% and 33.3%, respectively, comparing to the model control. The reduction effect of OTPS increased with the rise of dose. The activity of SOD and GSH-PX elevated significantly, while the activity of NOS decreased. The content of MDA and NO reduced significantly. The above results imply that antioxidant activity was enhanced. Comparing to XKW treatment, the effect of a dose of 300mg/(kg. bw) OTPS was much better. The research showed that the OTPS had a significant effect on reducing blood glucose, and could enhance the antioxidant activity of DM mice.

The effects of Hagochosan(HGCS) on hyperlipidemia in rats induced by high cholesterol diet (하고초산(夏枯草散)이 고지혈(高脂血) 유발(誘發) SHR 백서(白鼠)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • In order to investigate the effect of HGCS on Hypercholesterolemia in rats diagnosed with hypertension, changes of related factors in blood and tissues of animal models were studied. The results are as following: At 250 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ or lower doses of HGCS, human fibroblast cells showed a survival rate of more than 90%. HGCS significantly reduced the total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in blood observed in hypercholesterolemia rats. On the other hand, HGCS signicantly increased the blood HDL cholesterol level, compared to that of the control group. HGCS significantly reduced triglycerides caused by hypercholesterolemia. However, glucose level was decreased insignificantly. Significant decrease of hyperoxidative lipid level in tissues due to hypercholesterolemia was observed in HGCS treated group. Significant increase of SOD and catalase activities in tissues due to hypercholesterolemia were observed in HGCS treated group. From the results above, the anti-hypercholesterolemic effect of clinically used HGCS has been experimentally proved. More active prescription of HGCS to hypercholesterolemia and related patients should be available in the future.

Effect of Aeration-Agitation on Coenzyme Q10 Production Using Rhodobacter sphaeroides

  • With the aim of increasing the $CoQ_{10}$ production in mass culture, the effect of aeration-agitation on the $CoQ_{10}$ production using Rhodobactor sphaeroides was investigated in a l-L bioreactor. The maximum $CoQ_{10}$ production was 1.69 mg/g of dry cell weight under conditions of 50 Lux, $30^{\circ}C$, 300 rpm, and 5-vvm aeration. The $CoQ_{10}$ production was improved to produce 2.91 mg/g of dry cell weight under reduced conditions of agitation speed (200 rpm) and aeration rate (0.2 vvm). When R. sphaeroides was cultivated under more reduced DO levels during the exponential phase of the cell, the $CoQ_{10}$ production yield of 3.88-mg/g dry cell weight was the maximum obtained. Therefore, poorer conditions of aeration-agitation resulted in higher production of $CoQ_{10}$, and thus DO content was a crucial factor in the production of $CoQ_{10}$. Accordingly, it was necessary to control the DO concentration in order to enhance the $CoQ_{10}$ biosynthesis within a large-scale production.

AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE CYTOTOXICITY OF COMPOSITE RESIN ON MOUSE FIBROBLAST IN VITRO (복합(複合)레진의 세포독성(細胞毒性)에 관(關)한 실험적(實驗的) 연구(硏究))

  • In order to investigate the cytotoxicity of composite resin in vitro, BALB / C mouse fibroblast were cultured in MEM in which silux, P-50, microrest, clearfil, amalgam and glass - ionomer, in shape of $2{\times}9mm$ circular disk. The experiments were- performed by cell count on 4 hours, 1, 3, 6 days and the composite resin groups, amalgam, glass - ionomer were compared. 1. On the sixth day, the cellular number of resin composite groups were remarkedly reduced, in contrast, the that of amalgam and glass - ionomer group continuously increased. 2. It was only on the 4 hours that the cellular number contained in amalgam were reduced, but increased thereafter, and the cellular number contained in glass - ionomer are greater than other groups. 3. In resin group, especially between self - curing resin and light - curing resin, there is no difference in cellular number statistically (p>0.05). 4. It was amalgam where the round cell without cellular process was found on the 4. hours and on the 6 th day the cell without cellular process was found numeroulsy in resin group whereas in amalgam and glass - ionomer, like control group was contained cell forming monolayer. These result suggested that the toxicity of the self - curing and light - curing resin greater than that of the amalgam and glass - ionomer.

Experimental study on a new damping device for mitigation of structural vibrations under harmonic excitation

  • This manuscript introduces a new damping device which is composed of a water tank and a pendulum. The new damping device can be tuned to multiple frequencies. In addition, it has a higher energy dissipation capacity when compared with the conventional Tuned Liquid Dampers (TLDs). In order to evaluate the efficiency of this new damping device a series of free vibration and forced vibration tests were conducted on a scaled down single-story one-bay steel frame. Two different configurations were studied for the mass of the pendulum that included a completely and a partially submerged mass. It was observed that the completely submerged configuration led to 44% higher damping ratio when compared with the conventional TLD. In addition, the completely submerged configuration reduced the peak displacement response of the structure 1.6 times more than the conventional TLD. The peak acceleration response of the structure equipped with the new damping device was reduced twice more than the conventional TLD. It was also found that, when the excitation frequency is lower than the resonance frequency, the conventional TLD performs better than the partially submerged configuration of the new damping device.

A Study on the Dextran Formation and Inner Structure of Jeung-Pyun during the Fermentation by the Added Chitosan-Oligosaccharide (키토산 올리고당 첨가 증편 발효 중 Dextran 형성과 증편의 내부구조에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out in order to investigate the dextran formation and the internal structure of the chitosan-oligisaccharide(COS) Jeung-Pyun during the fermentation. To develop a functional Jeung-Pyun, COS was added to the rice at the level of 0, 2, 4, and 6% to the 2-hour-soaked rice. The pH, dextran and reducing sugar contents of COS batter, specific volume and the internal structure of COS were analyzed as a function of fermentation time. The specific volume of COS peaked at the 3 hour fermentation. The pH values of COS batters reduced with the fermentation time. The dextran content of the control batters peaked at the 7 hour fermentation. In contrast, the dextran contents of COS batters reduced up to 7th hour of fermentation, and then increased slowly until 20th hour of the fermentation process. From the air pore size and distribution of COS observed by SEM, the COS fermented fur 3 hour was judged as the best. It was concluded that COS prevented the fermation of dextran at the early stage of fermentation process.

Torque Ripple Reduction for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor using Harmonic Current Injection (고조파 전류를 이용한 영구자석형 동기 전동기의 토크 리플 저감)

  • This paper deals with the torque ripple reduction of permanent magnet synchronous motor using harmonic current injection. Torque ripple of electric motor reduces system stability and performances, therefore efforts to reduce torque ripple are exerted in the design process. Torque ripple can be reduced by appropriate pole/slot combination, skew of rotor or stator, design of magnetic circuit, etc. In addition, torque ripple can be also reduced by input voltage and current, and many researches have been conducted to reduce torque ripple for six-step drive. Torque ripple reduction for current vector controlled permanent magnet synchronous motor also have been conducted and verified by investigating back emf wave form. Torque ripple reduction in this paper started from getting torque profile according to input current and electrical angle calculated by FEA, then instantaneous currents at each electrical angles for constant torque are calculated and applied to experiments. Therefore, 0% of torque ripple can be obtained theoretically with harmonic current injection. In order to maximize the effect of torque ripple reduction, a BLDC motor having high harmonic component of back emf is chosen. With sinusoidal current drive, over 100% of torque ripple is obtained initially, then 0.5 % of torque ripple is obtained by FEA using harmonic current injection. The effect is verified by experiment and the presented method can be effectively applicable to Electric Power Steering(EPS).

The effects of Lactobacillus reuteri-containing probiotics on the viability and biofilm formation of oral microorganisms (Lactobacillus reuteri 함유 Probiotics가 구강미생물의 생존 및 biofilm 형성에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the inhibitory effects of probiotics containing Lactobacillus reuteri on Streptococcus mutans and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. In addition, the degree of biofilm formation, initial acidity, buffering ability, and acid production performance were measured to confirm the dental caries-inducing ability. Methods: S. mutans (KCTC3065) and A. actinomycetemcomitans (KCTC2581) were used as experimental strains. The number of viable cells, degree of biofilm formation, initial pH, buffering capacity, and production performance were measured for comparing L. reuteri-containing probiotics and Bulgaris. Results: The viability of S. mutans in the groups was reduced in the following order: Bulgaris, probiotics, control. The degree of biofilm formation was significantly higher at 0% and gradually reduced at different concentrations (p<0.01). At 2.5%, the absorbance of the probiotics and Bulgaris groups differed significantly (p<0.01). The acid formation ability differed significantly based on the performance of S. mutans in each product (p<0.05). The absorbance of the probiotics group was significantly lower than that of the Bulgaris group (p<0.01). Conclusions: This study suggests that the use of L. reuteri-containing probiotics as an adjuvant for the prevention and decreasing of oral diseases may reduce their incidence, which can be considered one of the benefits of using probiotics.
