  • Effects of freshwater red tide of Peridinium bipes (dinoflagellate) in August of 1991 on the carbon flux through the microbial loop were studied in Soyang Reservoir. Chlorophyll a and primary production, bacterial production in red tide area were 22, 18 and 400 times higher, respectively, than other sites. Phytoplandton biomass comprised 97% and 20% of food source of zooplankton grazing within and without red tide, respectively. The percent bacterial production supported by phytoplankton exudate was 14% within red tide and >100% without red tide. In laboratory experiments, more than 85% organic carbon of Peridinium biomass was released or degraded by heterotrophic bacteria within 14 days. As results of red tide of Peridinium with sudden influx of organic carbon in water column, the main food source of zooplankton and dependency of bacteria on phytoplankton exudate were changed. Therefore, the relative importance of microbial loop to grazing food web was changed.

  • As an example of many possible applications of OSMI data, we present a method to detect red tides. In Korean waters, red tides usually occur in the South Sea where the turbidity is usually high due to strong tidal mixing in the shallow sea. The conventional case 1 chlorophyll algorithm cannot be applied since it cannot distinguish chlorophyll from SS (suspended sediments). In October 1998, a red tide outbreak occurred off the coast of KunSan. We analyzed the SeaWiFS data of the outbreak. The standard SeaWiFS chlorophyll algorithm OC-2 was poor in identifying the red tides. However, comparison of spectra of normalized water-leaving radiance indicates that red tide pixels can be distinguished from sediment-laden pixels. Channel 443 and 555 were effective in showing the spectral characteristics. We suggest K490 algorithm as an example in summarizing the information of the spectra and thereby in distinguishing the red tide pixels. Further development is desirable.

  • Water management is the most important and difficult problems in red pepper cultivation. The water requirement of red pepper is different according to the area as well as climate condition, growth stage and soil texture. Also, the measurement of evapo-transpiration (PET) and crop coefficient (Kc) is very difficult especially in field cultivation. The average PET during 30 years of southern region of korea for the red pepper cultivation was a $2.75mm\;day^{-1}$. The water saving irrigation manual with irrigation interval and amount of irrigation according to growing season and soil texture, are developed based on the lysimeter experiments carried out by the RDA for 11 years about potential evapo-transpiration, crop coefficient for the 17 southern region of korea. The water saving irrigation manual can be used with easy to the farmer without soil sampling and any kinds of sensors measuring soil water status.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of red ginseng water extract (RGWE) on trypsin activity. After extraction of fat soluble and saponin component from red ginseng powder by methyl alcohol, the residue was extracted with distilled water, and manufactured to water extract. The extract was dialyzed with different molecular cut off membrane. Trypsin activity demonstrated the highest level at the RGWE concentration of 9${\times}$10$\^$-2/% in reaction mixture, and also increased to 15% at 2.9${\times}$10$\^$-3/%. Km value was decreased and Vmax was increased in the present of red ginseng water extract. Red ginseng water extract was partially purified by dialysis, Bio-Gel P-I0 and DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. The active fraction demonstrated positive reaction to ninhydrin, DNS and folin reaction.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the application of corrosion inhibitor and to examine the correlation between corrosion rate and red water in a series of batch tests and a test using auto corrosion monitoring system at A water treatment plant in Gyeonggido. The corrosion study in the auto corrosion monitoring system indicated that Fe concentration decreased by 30~50% and corrosion rate also reduced remarkably with corrosion inhibitor at $1.8mg\;PO_4/L$. After addition of corrosion inhibitor, it was indicated the effective adsorption of the inhibitor on the surface of the pipe line forming a protective film. The corrosion rate increases with the increase in Fe concentration. With $1.8mg\;PO_4/L$ of corrosion inhibitor, the corrosion rate decreased remarkably. Fe concentration had correlation to not only red water problems but also the corrosion rate that actually dissolved into the water, primarily due to the deposition of oxidized iron or other compounds as a scale, which serves as a large reservoir of corrosion by-product. Therefore, corrosion rate can be estimated by Fe concentration. For these reasons, an effective corrosion inhibitor is also an effective red water control reagent. The effect of the corrosion inhibition can last for some time even the application the corrosion inhibitor is discontinued. For the cost effective and efficient corrosion control, the concentration and timing of corrosion inhibitor addition must be determined properly.

  • Since the salinity of irrigation water is a critical constraint to the production of certain vegetable crops, salinity was considered as one of the most important factors of irrigation water. The purpose of this study were to monitor and assess the effects of saline irrigation water on strawberry and red radish growth in protected cultivation. One control and three treatments, which were differentiated according to the level of salinity in irrigated water, were employed for each vegetable to assess the effects of the irrigation with saline water. Monitoring has shown that using irrigation water with salinity above a certain level causes excessive accumulation of sodium (Na+) in both strawberry and red radish. Increased Na+ content was analyzed to be able to decrease the sugar content in strawberry. In addition, the salinity higher than the threshold level of irrigation water was found to reduce the growth and yield of strawberry and red radish. This study could contribute to suggest criteria for safe use of saline water in protected cultivation, although long-term monitoring is needed to get more representative results.

  • The present study was designed to elucidate the physiological changes with age by chronic administration of red ginseng. All rats were reared in the conventional system. Ginseng treated rats were continously supplied with ginseng water extracts together water from 6 weeks of age to the age 24 months. Rats did not show any discernible signs or the rejection symptoms by red ginseng water extracts. A long-term administration of red ginseng extracts did not cause any physiological changes in the gain of body and organs weight, food intake and general properties of urine. However, red ginseng caused to decrease the level of serum cholesterol, glucose and TBARS, and it attenuated effectively the age-dependent decline of LDH activity. Other biochemical parameters measured from blood and general properties of urine were not significantly changed. These results suggest that long-term administration of red ginseng to rat does not cause any clear physiological changes in appearance and urine, and it retards age-related deteriorations in some biochemical parameters such as LDL-cholesterol, glucose and LDH in serum.

  • Color concrete is produced by adding white portland cement and coloring agent. In Korea, colorant added to color concrete is expensive, durability evaluation in external environment is not verified and there is a tendency to avoid color concrete pouring. Red mud with a water content of 50% was prepared in liquid form using appropriate mixing water and additives for recycling as a coloring agent, the liquefied red mud manufactured was intended to show the possibility of using color concrete. In this paper, the application of red mud as an industrial by - product as a coloring agent for color concrete was investigated for the practical use of liquefied red mud by liquefying red mud and producing retaining wall block. As a result, it was found that all of the specifications stipulated in SPS-KCIC0001-0703 are satisfied.
