  • The research on Harmful Algal Blooms is generally in progress through field work, such as the naked eye and sampling. It was difficult to forecast exactly the course, from appearance of red tide to disappearance, with the established ways of investigation and analysis. Accordingly it is need to analyze environmental factors in time and space, the appearance of red tide and the path of its migration by more objective and scientific methods. In this study the remote sensing was used to diminish damage from the occurrence of red tide. Such as a temperature change of sea water and a change of tidal currents, the major cause for red tide. The probed data were utilized. The technique for forecast of red tide phenomenon on the south coast was researched by analyzing the cause of red tide, pollutant flowed from landand the possibility of application of the technique was showed.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the temporal and spatial distribution aspects of red tide using GIS techniques. The damage caused by red tide appears various aspects according to the species, concentration and spatial distribution of red tide plankton. Therefore, in order to prevent the damage of red tide it is important to understand the distribution characteristics of red tide by each species according to time and space. In this perspective, we analyzed the beginning outbreak area, spatial occurrence frequency and spatial migration of red tide. The spatial data used by this study was constructed by digitizing the red tide quick report and coupled with various attributes such as species, concentration and water temperature for construction of red tide database. We used various spatial analysis methods such as union, intersect, tracking, buffer and spatial interpolation for analyzing temporal and spatial characteristics of red tide. From the result of these spatial analyses, we could get the spatial information on the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of red tide at the Southern Sea.

  • Red tide has caused massive fish kills in Korean coastal waters with devastating economic loss in the aquaculture industry since 1995. Remote sensing technique has shown to be effective for the detection of red tide in wide areas, where the absorption property of red tide water plays a central role in understanding the red tide reflectance. This study analyzed the optical absorption property of sea waters dominated by the dinoflagellate specie of Alexandirum affine, off the Tongyeong area in August, 2017. Water samples collected from 20 stations in the ship-based campaign were measured for absorption by pigment, suspended solid, and dissolved organic matter, with the corresponding water quality variables such as chlorophyll concentration and total suspended solid. The analysis showed that Alexandrium-dominated water exhibits strong absorption in the spectral range below 400 nm unlike that of diatom-dominated waters, and greater fluctuations in the range of 400 nm - 500 nm. The packaging effect in pigment absorption was stronger in Alexandrium-dominated waters, and the exponent in the absorption by detritus and gelbstoff is disparate for diatom and Alexandrium. In the model for the detritus and gelbstoff absorption (adg(λ)=adg0)e-s(λ-λ0)), the optimal exponent coefficient(s) for the Alexandrium was close to 0.01 rather than to 0.015, which was commonly use for modelling diatom waters.

  • Optical properties of sea water were studied in the southern sea of Korea, based on ten oceanographic stations in July, 1980. Submarine daylight intensity was measured at intervals of 5m depth in the upper 70m layer by using the underwater irradiameter (Kahlsico # 268 WA 360). The mean absorption coefficients of the sea water were shown as 0.102 (0.066~0.137), 0.119 (0.069~0.154), 0.091 (0.054~.0123), and 0.095 (0.056~0.129) for clear, red, green, and blue color respectively. The transparency ranged from 13 to 25 meters (mean 17.1 m). The mean water color in this area was 3.9 (3-5) in Forel scales. The relation between absorption coefficient (k) and transparency (D) was k=1.17/D, k=2.01/D, k=1.52/D, and k=1.60/D for clear, red, green, and blue color respectively. The rates of light penetration for clear, red, green, and blue color in four different depths were computed with reference to the surface light intensity respectively. The mean rates of light penetration in proportion to depths were as follows; clear : 57.3%(5m), 20.82%(15m), 5.16%(30m), 0.94%(50m). red : 52.2%(5m), 15.99%(15m), 2.99%(30m), 0.39%(50m). green : 60.9%(5m), 24.51%(15m), 7.11%(30m), 1.56%(50m). blue : 59.4%(5m), 22.92%(15m), 6.09%(30m), 1.29%(50m).

  • We constructed marine forest to restore barren grounds which are expanding in the east coast of Korea using 2 methods of (1)seedlings transplantation method and (2)underwater floating ropes method. We transplanted 3 macroalgae species, Ecklonia cava, Undaria pinnatifida, and Saccharina. japonica to construct marine forest. Blade length of Undaria pinnatifida on underwater floating ropes was $56.70{\pm}8.69mm$ in April and grew $68.75{\pm}22.30mm$ in May and $70.75{\pm}14.36mm$ in July. Blade length of S. japonica was shown 97.95-143.00mm in April to June. Blade length of Ecklonia cava was $30.50{\pm}1.91mm$ in May, $41.55{\pm}1.84mm$ in August, $45.30{\pm}2.57mm$ in November, 2009 and $45.30{\pm}1.99mm$ in February, 2010. The survey on Dangsa area, Ulsan-city in January, 2009 found a total number of 15 algal species(1 brown algae, 14 red algae species) with the highest variety at 5m depth of A station and the lowest at 8m depth of A and B stations. The March survey showed a total of 24 species (1 green algae, 1 brown algae, 22 red algae species) with the highest variety of 11 at depths of 3m and 5m of B station and the lowest of 6 at 10m of B station. In May, total biomass was 3,755.4g (green algae 1.2g, brown algae 199.0g, red algae 3,555.2g). From January, 2009, we found that E. cava was dominant at the depths of 3m and 5m of A and B stations while Peyssonnelia capensis was dominant at the depth of 8m of A station. The 8m depth of B station was dominated by Acrosorium polyneurum. In May, Grateloupia lanceolata was dominant at 8m depth of A station while other depths were dominated by Phycodrys fimbriata. In June, the dominant species were G. lanceolata at the 3m depth, E. cava at the 5m and P. fimbriata at the depths of 8m and 10m of A station. Under B station, G. lanceolata was dominant at the depths of 3m and 5m while P. fimbriata was dominant at the depths of 8m and 10m.

  • To clarify the potentiality of sea cucumbers as dietary food, the effects of those glycoprotein on dietary proteins and physicochemical properties of those proteins were studied. Crude glycoprotein was efficiently extracted using 20mM sodium phosphate beffer(pH 7.0) and by salting out with 80% ammoniym sulfate saturation. The fractions obtained through the DEAE-cellulose ion exchange chromatography was identified as glycoprotein by Schiff's reagent and SDS polyacrylanide gel electro-phoresis. The yields of each glycoprotein from the three kinds of sea cucumbers were 0.814(red), 0.184(blue) and 0.232(black) and the molecular weights of the glycoproteins subunits were ranged from 20,000 dalton(blue and black) to 29,000 dalton(red), respectively. The electrophoretic patterns of the glycoprotein isolates were similar to each other and any significant difference in amino acid pattern was observed. Predominant arnino scids were Asx(aspartic acid and asparagine) and Glx(glutamic acid and glutamine) ; in contrast, histidine and methionine were below 2% as compared to total amino acids. water holding capacities of the glycoprotein isolates from red, blue and black cucumbers were equally 100% and emulsion activities ranged from 53% to 64%. In addition the emulsion stabilities were 7.04, 1.37 and 2.44, respectively. In vitro digestibility of some proteins(casein, SPI and squid) was decreased as increasing the level of the freeze dried sea cucumber powder and glycoprotein isolates. But squid protein was not affected.

  • In this study, we investigated safety and efficacy of a low temperature immunization protocol with NNV in red spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara and long tooth grouper, Epinephelus bruneus and seven band grouper, Hyporthodus septemfasciatus. Further, growth rate between immunized and naïve fish was evaluated during the experiment to check side effect of immunization. Three grouper species were immunized by immersion method with live NNV at 105.0 TCID50/mL at 16.5℃ for 30 min and reared for 120 days at natural sea water temperature. To evaluate growth rate, total length and wet weight was measured 7 times after immunization. Immunized three grouper species were challenged by intramuscular inoculation with NNV at 104.2 TCID50/100 µL/fish. Immunization at low temperature with live NNV did not show any clinical symptoms of infection, mortality and inhibition of growth. After challenge, cumulative mortality of naïve seven band grouper, red spotted grouper, long tooth grouper were 45, 10, 20 %, respectively. However no mortality was observed at immunized groupers. Thus, it was demonstrated that immunization at low temperature with live NNV are able to protect three different species of groupers without inhibition of growth.

  • In the present study, growth performances of the offspring from selected brood line were compared to those of the offspring from non-selected brood line of red sea bream. Offspring groups were mass produced separately from two brood lines, selected and non-selected Korean strain. Selected brood line have been selected by fish size for four generations (upper 5∼30% per generation) and non-selected brood line is the second generation of wild population at south sea in Korea. There's no significant difference in body length between offspring from selected and non-selected brood line during early growing stage (until 96-days old). However, offspring from selected brood line had superior body weight growth than offspring from non-selected brood line. At sea cages rearing trials with communal stocking, Offspring from selected brood line showed significantly better performance in body weight, body length, weight gain, specific growth rate and feed consumption (but not in feed conversion ratio) than offspring from non-selected brood line. At 24 months old, offspring from selected brood line grew faster 1.10 times in body length and 1.41 times in body weight than offspring from non selected brood line. The response to selection when compared to a non-selected line is on average of 10% in weight per generation at 24 months old.

  • Subtidal benthic macroalgal flora and community structure on barren grounds were examined seasonally along vertical shore gradients on the rocky shore of Hajung, Pohang, on the southeast coast of Korea, from February 2005 to November 2006. Twenty-six seaweed species were identified, including 5 green, 7 brown, and 14 red algae. The number of seaweed species ranged between 7 and 17 among seasons and between 13 and 20 species were found in vertical gradients along the shore. Over the study period, average seaweed biomass (g wet wt/$m^2$) was 299.88 g and it ranged seasonally from 120.99 to 620.00 g. Seaweed biomass declined with increasing seawater depth and ranged between 323.06 and 593.68 g. The dominant seaweed species, in terms of biomass, were Desmarestia ligulata and Sargassum honeri, which grew at depths between 5 and 10 m. The red alga Delisea pulchra was also abundant at a depth of 15 m. No seasonal patterns were found in community indices. Along vertical shore gradients, community indices showed different patterns; the dominance index increased and the richness, evenness, and diversity indices decreased with seawater depth.
