  • Growth of any country rest in the consumption of industrial wastes for its infrastructure amenities. Countries like India positively desires a vital utilization of industrial waste resembling paper sludge in the construction industry to make various building materials. Also, it is the duty of all civil engineers or researchers to attach them in mounting new materials from the waste dumped as land fillings. In every construction project, about 70% of cost accounts for the procurement of materials. If this, can be minimized consequently the cost of construction will certainly be condensed. Research has established that the waste paper sludge can be reused in the construction field for a probable scope. The construction diligences munch through a massive quantity of non-renewable resources. On the additional dispense, more waste paper board sludge ends up in landfills or dumpsites than those recycled. Consequently, waste paper sludge for use as a construction material composes a step towards sustainable development. Keeping this in mind an endeavor has been made to utilize paper board sludge acquired from the paper board industry and used with several pozzolanic and cementitious materials for a specific purpose. The addition of paper sludge has been varied from 0% to 20% by weight of cement. The tests done with the samples expose that four samples showed significant outcomes with remarkable strength and durability properties which guide to move for the next phase of research for producing lightweight tiles.

  • This study was carried out to resplace traditional virgin wood fiber by recycled MDF-waste fiber for the manufacture of high density fiberboard. For the recycling, MDF waste was disintegrated for 10 minutes and beaten for 15 minutes. There was no difference in formaldehyde emission by desiccator method between virgin wood fiber and disintergrated and beaten MDF-waste fiber. Fiberboard which was maded from 100% of disintergrated and beaten MDF-waste fiber showed similar physical and mechanical properties to those of virgin fiber. The yield of recycled fiber from MDF waste was 85%.

  • A great difference in drainage time was observed from the recycled stocks between corrugated container board and its component papers, liner and medium paper. It could be assumed that the different drainage property should be caused from a starch adhesive present in the corrugated board. Thus, three types of starch such as dried Stein-Hall adhesive, cooked starch solution, and its dried film were added to linerboard stock in order to investigate the mechanism of drainage reduction. The water-swollen starch particles derived from Stein-Hall adhesive were drastically deteriorated the drainage time, even though the amount of starch is very small (2% or below). The drainage time of OCC was improved by 25% when amylase was used a new biological treatment. The results from the lab and mill test showed that the starch-degradable enzymatic treatment improves the drainage property as well as the reduction of calcium hardness.

  • Linerboards containing wood flours were developed to increase solid contents in wet pressing process. Presence of wood flours in recycled fibers allowed passage of pressurized water at high wet pressing pressure, and increased solid contents while keeping the bulk of the board. The amount of wood flour addition should be controlled based on the intensity of the wet pressing pressure and the properties of the wood flours. Addition of cationic starch to the wood flour containing OCC furnish showed synergic increase of solid content and strength properties. Shapes of the wood flours such as spherical and rod type added to OCC furnish affected largely their solid content, drainage, and board physical properties.

  • The reduction of energy consumption in papermaking process has been considered as one of the major issue in the paper technology. The energy efficiency of paper mill becomes more significant for the mill which manufacture the board grade products such as linerboard with recycled paper such as OCC. The application of lignocellulose spacer to the board grade paper stock would be the feasible solution by increasing the paper bulk and the drying efficiency. The major defects originated from the application of the lignocellulose spacer could be the loss of strength properties. In this study, the ways for improving the strength properties of the spacer-added linerboard were suggested and evaluated. The effects of the addition of various types polyelectrolytes were tested and the different methods of polyelectrolytes were applied for finding the efficient way. The pretreatments of lignocellulose spacer with the polyelectrolytes during wood spacer hydration resulted in the higher strength properties than the typical application method such as the addition to the mixed stock. Multilayer treatments of the spacer with polyelectrolytes were also evaluated and leaded to the higher strength properties with the similar bulk improvement.

  • The solvent extraction method was applied on a spent solution containing copper, which was produced in a printed circuit board process, to recover copper and to reuse the etching solution. Lix 64 N ($\alpha$-Hydroxyoxime + $\beta$-Hydroxybenzophenone Oxime) was used as a solvent. The acidic spent copper solution was mixed with and alkaline copper solution to pH=2. The solvent including 30 volume% of Lix 64 N extracted 17.1gr/l of copper from the mixed spent copper solution. In the continuous bench scale experiment, 4 stages for extraction, 2 stages for stripping and 4 stages for washing were used. Recovered copper was recycled as copper sulfate and the raffinate was reused as copper etchant. The percentage of copper recovery and the purity of copper sulfate were higher than 99.9%, respectively.

  • The reduction of the energy consumption in papermaking process become more important issue because of the regulation of green house gas (GHG) emission. Since more than half of energy for papermaking process is consumed during drying process, the increase of the drying efficiency would be very important solution for saving energy and reduction of GHG emission. The improvement of drying efficiency could be very difficult for the liner board mill because the liner board are usually made of recycled paper, OCC (old corrugated container). The short fiber and fines originated the OCC lead to compact sheet structure and delay the water flow out during wet pressing process and drying process. The application of lignocellulose spacer could provide more loose wet sheet structure and result in the higher drainage rate and the improved drying efficiency. In this study, the effects of the application of lignocellulose spacer to the liner board mill were evaluated based on the mill trial. In order to overcome the common disadvantage of the spacer, the loss of strength properties, the spacer was pretreated with amphoteric polyelectrolyte during mill trial. The results showed the application of pretreated spacer improved the drying efficiency by reducing steam consumption. And the loss in the strength properties by the spacer could be supplemented by the pretreatment.

  • On the international provision on prohibition of ocean dumping of waste, tap water sludge has been buried or recycled on th low value added product as landfill. Due to the tap water sludge having high inorganic content, differing from the sewage sludge, it is possible to use as a usable resource by suitable process. We have studied on hydro thermal processing of tap water sludge with phosphoric acid and finally synthesize a artificial zeolite having a deodorization property. To use it as a building material, it has to be solidification. This study is on the properties of artificial zeolite synthsized and solidification properties by various types of solidifier. It is showed that the slaked lime is the best on setting property and its optimum content is 30-60 weight proportion. Solid by solidified by slaked lime has low strength and excellent deodorization performance, so it is possible to use as a functional pannel as gypsum board.

  • The base paper of corrugated board is mainly produced from Korean old corrugated container (KOCC), and thus the recycling rate of KOCC is very high. However, there is a problem that the pulp quality is very low while the recycling rate of OCC is high. The fines content in KOCC, the main source of the corrugated board, amounts to nearly the half of the total stock, and its formation increases as recycling process repeats due to the hornification of fiber. There have been attempts to improve the drainage property of OCC by increasing the headbox concentration of the paper machine or by applying drainage-promoting polymer additives. However, these conventional methods have problems of weakened paper strength and lowered converting fitness caused by paper formation hindrance. The strength of linerboard could not be increased in case KOCC is used, because hornified OCC pulp can-not be sufficiently refined due to the lowered drainage property caused by fines formation. We studied about a new technique consisting of froth-flotation for fractionating pulp stock into a long fiber portion and fines fraction. This study will be developed in order to enhance the drainage and strength properties of a recycled OCC pulp by selective treatment of flocculant on fractionated OCC Fines.
