Based on the empirical formulas for power spectra of generalized modal forces and local fluctuating wind forces in across-wind and torsional directions, the wind-induced lateral-torsional coupled response analysis of a representative rectangular tall building was conducted by setting various parameters such as eccentricities in centers of mass and/or rigidity and considering different torsional to lateral stiffness ratios. The eccentricity effects on the lateral-torsional coupled responses of the tall building were studied comprehensively by structural dynamic analysis. Extensive computational results indicated that the torsional responses at the geometric center of the building may be significantly affected by the eccentricities in the centers of mass and/or rigidity. Covariance responses were found to be in the same order of magnitude as the along-wind or across-wind responses in many eccentricity cases, suggesting that the lateral-torsional coupled effects on the overall wind-induced responses can not be neglected for such situations. The calculated results also demonstrated that the torsional motion contributed significantly to the total responses of rectangular tall buildings with mass and/or rigidity eccentricities. It was shown through this study that the framework presented in this paper provides a useful tool to evaluate the wind-induced lateral-torsional coupled responses of rectangular buildings, which will enable structural engineers in the preliminary design stages to assess the serviceability of tall buildings, potential structural vibration problems and the need for a detailed wind tunnel test.
Effect of boundary layer thickness on the flow characteristics around a rectangular prism has been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. Three different boundary layers(thick, medium and thin)were generated in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel at Pusan National University. The thick boundary layer having 670mm thickness was generated by using spires and roughness elements. The medium thickness of boundary layer$(\delta=270mm)$ was the natural turbulent boundary layer at the test section with fully long developing length(18m). The thin boundary layer with 36.5mm thickness was generated by on a smooth panel elevated 70cm from the wind tunnel floor. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and the height of the model was $7.9{\times}10^3$. The mean velocity vector fields and turbulent kinetic energy distribution were measured and compared. The effect of boundary layer thickness is clearly observed not only in the length of separation bubble but also in the reattachment points. The thinner boundary layer thickness, the higher turbulent kinetic energy peak around the model roof. It is strongly recommended that the height ratio between model and approaching boundary layer thickness should be a major parameter.
This paper presents the results of a set of wind tunnel tests carried out to examine wind-induced overall structural loads on rectangular medium-rise buildings. Emphasis was directed towards torsion and its correlation with peak shear forces in transverse and longitudinal directions. Two building models with the same horizontal dimensions but different gabled-roof angles ($0^{\circ}C$ and $45^{\circ}C$) were tested at different full-scale equivalent eave heights (20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 m) in open terrain exposure for all wind directions (every $15^{\circ}C$). Wind-induced pressures were integrated over building surfaces and results were obtained for along-wind force, across-wind force, and torsional moment. Maximum wind force component was given along with the other simultaneously-observed wind force components normalized by the overall peak. The study found that for flat-roofed buildings maximum torsion for winds in transverse direction is associated with 80% of the overall shear force perpendicular to the longer horizontal building dimension; and 45% of the maximum shear occurs perpendicular to the smaller horizontal building dimension. Comparison of the wind tunnel results with current torsion provisions in the American wind standard, the Canadian and European wind codes demonstrate significant discrepancies. Suggested load combination factors were introduced aiming at an adequate evaluation of wind load effects on rectangular medium-rise buildings.
The aim of this paper is to investigate stress analysis of semi-infinite soils consisting of two layers with twin rectangular tunnels under static loads. The region close to the ground surface and tunnel modelled within finite elements. In order to use a more realistic model, the far region is modelled within infinite elements. The material model of the layered soil is considered as elastic and isotropic. In the finite element solution of the problem, two dimensional (2D) plane solid elements are used with sixteen-nodes rectangular finite and eight-nodes infinite shapes. Finite and infinite elements are ordered to be suitable for the tunnel and the soils. The governing equations of the problem are obtained by using the virtual work principle. In the numerical process, the five-point Gauss rule is used for the calculation of the integrations. In order to validate using methods, comparison studies are performed. In the numerical results, the stress distributions of the two layered soils containing twin rectangular tunnels presented. In the presented results, effects of the location of the tunnels on the stress distributions along soil depth are obtained and discussed in detail. The obtained results show that the locations of the tunnels are very effective on the stress distribution on the soils.
This study aims at verifying characteristics of torsional fluctuating moment coefficient and power spectral density, which is needed to estimate torsional response of tall buildings. In order to estimate characteristics, the wind tunnel tests have been conducted on 52 types aero-elastic model of the rectangular prisms with various aspects ratios, side ratios and surface roughness in turbulent boundary layer flows. In this paper, characteristics of torsional fluctuating wind force are briefly discussed and then these results were mainly analyzed as a function of the aspects ratios and side ratios of buildings.
In this study, a turbulence simulation is carried out in a suction type wind tunnel using grids, where turbulent flows with various turbulence intensity are successfully produced by the change of grid size, arrangement of grids and settling position, respectively. Response tests of rectangular cylinder models with aspect ratio of 2 and 4 are carried out in smooth flow and generated turbulent flows. Additionally, two types of fairing are considered such as right triangle and regular triangle. The effects of wind velocity fluctuations and fairing are discussed on vortex-induced oscillation.

In order to simulate a smoke or poisonous gas emergency in a rectangular tunnel and to investigate a better way to exhaust the smoke, the characteristics of smoke flow have been analyzed using flow field data acquired by Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). Olive oil has been used as tracer particles with the kinematic viscosity of air, $1.51{\times}10^{-5}\;m^2/s$. The investigation has done in the range of Reynolds number of 1600 to 5333 due to the inlet velocities of 0.3 m/s to 1 m/s respectively. The average velocity vector and instantaneous kinematic energy fields with respect to the three different Reynolds numbers are comparatively discussed by the Flow Manager. In general, the smoke flow becomes more disorderly and turbulent with the increase of Reynolds number. Kinematic energy in the measured region increases with the increase of Reynolds number while decreasing at the leeward direction about the outlet region.
This study has conducted a computational analysis to find out about characteristics of heat flow emitted from power lines when the sectional form of electric power tunnel that adopts forced ventilation is shaped like a rectangular, arch or horseshoe. The result of analysis shows that the temperature in the vicinity of the power line peaked at $70^{\circ}C$ when the sectional form is a rectangular, which indicates it is less affected by ventilation than the form of an arch or horseshoe.
The present paper is focused on analyzing a set of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation data on reducing orthogonal peak base moment coefficients on a high-rise rectangular building with wings. The study adopts an aerodynamic optimization procedure (AOP) composed of CFD, artificial neural network (ANN), and genetic algorithm (G.A.). A parametric study is primarily accomplished by altering the wing positions with 3D transient CFD analysis using k - ε turbulence models. The CFD technique is validated by taking up a wind tunnel test. The required design parameters are obtained at each design point and used for training ANN. The trained ANN models are used as surrogates to conduct optimization studies using G.A. Two single-objective optimizations are performed to minimize the peak base moment coefficients in the individual directions. An additional multiobjective optimization is implemented with the motivation of diminishing the two orthogonal peak base moments concurrently. Pareto-optimal solutions specifying the preferred building shapes are offered.

Based on the investigation results on the damages of some underground structures due to the severe Kobe Earthquake it concludes that the aseismicity of underground is far superior to that of aboveground structures. Therefore, at first, necessity to reconstruct strong cities especially by good use of underground space will be discussed. Then two non-circular shield-tunneling projects in Japan are discussed. The first is construction of the world's first shield driven double track subway tunnel of rectangular shape for the Kyoto Municipal Subway. This paper presents a report on the overall planning, the tests that were performed in the process of planning, and the results of driving. The second is the design of the Hirakata Tunnel, with three traffic lanes and shoulders on one side, which will be constructed as one of the tunnels for The New Meishin (Nagoya-Kobe) Expressways. This paper presents the feasibility study of the shield tunneling method, using the same design criteria as the non-circular, horseshoe section of mountain tunnel, to the equivalent section of the Hirakata Tunnel.
