  • An explicit direct time integration method based solution algorithm is proposed to predict dynamic postbuckling response of thin plates. Based on the von Karman's plate equations and Marquerre's shallow shell theory, a rectangular plate finite element is formulated and utilized in this study. The element formulation takes into account geometrical nonlinearity and initial deflection of plates. The solution algorithm employs the central difference method. Using the computer program developed by the authors, dynamic postbuckling behavior of elastic thin plates under impact loading is investigated by considering the time variation of load and load duration. The efficiency of the proposed solution algorithm is examined through illustrative numerical examples.

  • In this paper, the effect of wrinkling on the cut propagation direction of thin membrane was studied using geometrically nonlinear shell element post-buckling analysis. In the analysis, rectangular tensile membrane configuration with a slanted center cut was considered. The cut propagation direction was predicted by maximum energy release rate method, $K_{II}$-zero method, and maximum tangential stress method. The cut propagation angle and the $J$-integral values were calculated for the wrinkled and unwrinkled cases and the results were compared. Various initial cut orientation angles were considered and the effect on the propagation direction was studied. The cut propagation paths were also predicted by virtual cut extension approach.

  • Thin-walled multicell box girders subjected to an eccentric load can he produced the three global behaviors of flexure, torsion, and distortion. Specially in railway bridges subjected to much eccentric load, it is quite important to evaluate influences of torsion and distortion. But it is very difficult to evaluate each influences of major behaviors numerically. If we can decompose an eccentric load P into flexural, torsional, and distortional forces. we can execute quantitative analysis each influences of major behaviors. Decomposition of Applied Load for Thin-walled Rectangular multi-cell box girders is reserched by Park, Nam- Hoi(Development of a multicell Box Beam Element Including Distortional Degrees of Freedom, 2003). But researches about trapezoidal multi-cell section is insufficient. So, this paper deals with multi-cell trapezoidal box girders. An expanded method, which is based on the force decomposition method for a single cell box girder given by Nakai and Yoo, is developed herein to decompose eccentric load Pinto flexural, torsional, and distortional forces. Derive formulas by decomposition of eccentric load is verified by 3D shell-modelling numerical analysis.

  • This study aimed to develop a high-order shear deformation theory to predict the free vibration of hybrid cross-ply laminated plates under different boundary conditions. The equations of motion for laminated hybrid rectangular plates are derived and obtained by using Hamilton's principle. The closed-form solutions of anti-symmetric cross-ply and angle-ply laminates are obtained by using Navier's solution. To assess the validity of our method, we used the finite element method. Firstly, the analytical and the numerical implementations were validated for an antisymmetric cross-ply square laminated with available results in the literature. Then, the effects of side-to-thickness ratio, aspect ratio, lamination schemes, and material properties on the fundamental frequencies for different combinations of boundary conditions of hybrid composite plates are investigated. The comparison of the analytical solutions with the corresponding finite element simulations shows the good accuracy of the proposed analytical closed form solution in predicting the fundamental frequencies of hybrid cross-ply laminated plates under different boundary conditions.

  • In this work, the structural response of thin-walled, composite beams with built-in twist angles is analyzed using a mixed beam approach. The analytical model includes the effects of elastic couplings, shell wall thickness, and torsion warping. Reissner's semi-complimentary energy functional is used to describe the beam theory and also to deal with the mixed-nature in the beam kinematics. The bending and torsion related warpings introduced by the non-zero pretwist angles are derived in closed-form through the proposed beam formulation. The theory is validated with available literature and detailed finite element analysis results for rectangular solid section beams with elastic couplings. Very good correlation has been obtained for the cases considered.

  • We present a GPS-derived regional ionosphere model, which estimates Total Electron Content (TEC) in a rectangular grid on the spherical shell over Korea. After dividing longitude and latitude over Korea with 1$^{\circ}$$\times$1$^{\circ}$ spatial resolution, the TEC at the vertex of the grid was estimated by the Kalman filter. The GPS data received from nine nationwide GPS stations, operated by Korea Astronomy Observatory (KAO), were used for this study. To reduce inherent noises, the pseudorange data were phase-leveled by a linear combination of pseudoranges and carrier phases. The solar-geomagnetic reference frame, which is less variable to the ionosphere movement due to the Sun and the geomagnetic field than an Earth-fixed frame, was used. During a quiet time of solar activity, the KAO's regional ionosphere map indicated 30-45 Total Electron Content Unit at the peak of the diurnal variation. In comparison with the Global ionosphere Map of the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe, RMS differences were at the level of 4-5 TECU for five days.

  • In case that an infinite length waveguide structure is connected with a finite length structure, it is required to combine a wave approach for the waveguide structure and a modal approach for the finite length structure to investigate the dynamic response of the connected target structure. In this study, the wavenumber finite element (WFE) analysis is adopted for the infinite length waveguide substructure and a finite element (FE) method is applied for the finite length substructure and then their results are coupled in terms of the impedance or mobility at the connected points between the substructures. As a structural model, an infinite length cylindrical shell with a rectangular plate inside is regarded. These two substructures are connected at the four corner points of the plate, rigidly or resiliently. From this investigation, it was confirmed that the wave approach (WFE method) and modal approach (FE method) can be combined by the impedance coupling.

  • For stiffened plates composed of composite materials, many researchers have used a finite element method which connected isoparametric plate elements and beam elements. However, the finite element method is difficult to reflect local behavior of stiffener because beam elements are transferred stiffness for nodal point of plate elements, especially the application is limited in case of laminated composite structures. In this paper, for analysis of laminated composite stiffened plates, 3D shell elements for stiffener and plate are employed. Reissner-Mindlin's first order shear deformation theory is considered in this study. But when thickness will be thin, isoparamatric plate bending element based on the theory of Reissner-Mindlin is generated by transverse shear locking. To eliminate the shear locking and virtual zero energy mode, the substitute shear strain field is used. A deflection distribution is investigated for simple supported rectangular and skew stiffened laminated composite plates with arbitrary orientation stiffener as not only variation of slenderness and aspect ratio of the plate but also variation of skew angle of skew stiffened plates.

  • In this study, an attempt for formulating a new and simplified rectangular finite element having only four corner nodal points is made to analyze the elastic-plastic large deformation behaviour up to the ultimate limit state of plates with initial imperfections. The present finite element contains the geometric nonlinearity caused by both in-plane and out-of-plane large deformation because for very thin plates the influence of the former may not be negligible. Treatment of expanded plastic zone in the plate thickness direction of the element is simplified based upon the concept of plastic node method so that the elastic-plastic stiffness matrix of the element is derived by the simple matrix operation without performing complicated numerical integration. Thus, a considerable saving of the computational efforts is expected. A computer program is also completed based on the present formulation and numerical calculation for some examples is performed so as to verify the accuracy and validity of the program.

  • Growth and survival of the spat of arkshell, Scapharca broughtonii were investigated for the improvement of survival in intermediate culture with different shape of protective net and type of preventive net of spat loss. The growth performance of the spat of arkshell was observed for 60 days by using different forms of protective net, as the exposure form with an average shell length of $12.8{\pm}3.2$ mm(P<0.05), the fish pot form with $12.2{\pm}3.5$ mm, the cylinder form with $11.9{\pm}3.8$ mm and the last one is the rectangular form with $10.9{\pm}3.7$ mm. Their numerical value did not show any marked difference with each other. But in case of survival rate, the fish pot form showed highest survival rate which is 43.7% and the significantly lowest was showed by the exposure form, which is 5.4%(P<0.05). The cylinder form and rectangular form showed 41.2 and 31.6% respectively. And then the growth of the spat of arkshell was observed for 163 days by rearing in a sort of preventive net, the first group was in a blackout curtain with average shell length of $13.9{\pm}3.1$ mm, the next group was in a balsam pear net with $12.9{\pm}3.0$ mm, in a polyethylene net with $11.8{\pm}3.1$ mm and the control with $12.6{\pm}3.3$ mm which was not installed by preventive net of spat loss. The survival rate was 91.5% in a blackout curtain, 90.1% in a polyethylene net, 88.5% in a balsam pear net and 61.5% in a controlled group. It is seen that the highest growth and survival rate were observed in a fish pot form and cylinder form. These results were a little bit difference from those of the spat of arkshell cultured in the form of different preventive nets. There was no significant difference in survival rate in relation to the sorts of preventive net against carrying-away, but there was a difference in survival rate by more than 30% as against the non-installed controlled group. We expect that survival rate would be highly improved in intermediate culture carried out with fish pot form and cylinder form of protective net and preventive net of spat loss.
