The brine and seawater are important and largely untapped sources of critical trace metals and elements. The coupling of selective recovery of trace metals from seawater/brine with desalination plants gives an added advantage of energy credits to desalination plants and as well as reduce the cost of desalinated water. In this paper, status review on recovery of important trace metals and other alkali metals from seawater is presented. The potential of Indian desalination plants for recovery of trace metals, based on recovery ratio of 0.35 is also highlighted. Studies carried out by the process based on adsorption using Radiation Induced Grafted (RIG) polymeric adsorbents and then fractional elutions are presented. The fouling factors due to bio fouling and dirt fouling have been estimated for various locations of interest through field trails. The pay loader in the form of compact Contactor Assembly with minimum pressure drop, for loading specially designed radiation grafted sorbent in leaflet form has been briefed, as required for plant scale facility. The typical conceptual process design details of farm assembly of project CRUDE are described.

Heavy metals such as Cu, Ni, Cd, and Pb were chemically extract from the contaminated soils using the chelating agents, EDTA and DTPA. These chemical extraction have been focused on its applicability to a wide range of soils. Results of extractive efficiency for heavy metal follow the order : Cu-EDTA $\geq$ Ni-EDTA > Pb-EDTA > Cd-EDTA > Cu-DTPA> Pb-DTPA. This result is coincided with order of conditional formation constants(Kr) of metal-chelate agent. The second study involved the recovery of the metals and EDTA from complex solutions by an electromembrane process. The overall processes of regeneration, recovery, and reuse were evaluated. The electrochemical studies showed that copper could be chosen as an electrode to plate Cd, Cu, and Pb. At least 95% of 75 of EDTA and associated Cu or Pb could be recovered by the electromembrane process. Recovery of Cd by electodeposition was not possible with the copper electrode. The percent EDTA recovery is equal to the percentage of metal electroplated from the chelates.

As expensive and valuable metals being used in electronic and semiconducting industries are abandoned as industrial wastes after use of them, it is required to recover them from e-wasted electronics parts. Gold which is used for printed circuit boards or electronic equipments, accessories, etc., is one of e-Wasted materials and recently indium, gallium, zirconium, cobalt, molybdenum and lithium are bacome valuable metals to be recovered from the e-wastes. Since the amount of precious metals is now being faced with scarcity, lean too much on area and instability of supply, and industrial demands are rapidly increasing every year, it becomes more important to recover the valuable metals from the industrial wastes. In this review, we introduced technologies and research trend of the recovery processes of valuable metals from the e-wastes in high-tech devices over the world.
The main objective of this study is to recovery valuable metals with metal particle size distributions in waste cell phone PCBs(Printed Circuit Boards) by means of pulverization and nitric acid process. The particle size classifier also was evaluated by specific metal contents. The PCBs were pulverized by a fine pulverizer. The particle sizes were classified by 5 different sizes which were PcS1(0.2 mm below), PcS2(0.20~0.51 mm), PcS3(0.51~1.09 mm), PcS4(1.09~2.00 mm) and PcS5(2.00 mm above). Non-magnetic metals in the grinding particles were separated by a hand magnetic. And then, Cu, Co and Ni were separated by 3M nitric acid. Particle diameter of PCBs were 0.388~0.402 mm after the fine pulverizer. The sorting coefficient were 0.403~0.481. The highest metal content in PcS1. And the bigger particle diameter, the lower the valuable metals exist. The recovery rate of the valuable metals increases in smaller particle diameter with same leaching conditions. For further work, it could improve to recovery of the valuable metals effectively by means of individual treatment, multistage leaching and different leaching solvents.
Korea, one of the manufacturing-oriented countries, consumes a large amount of metals in various industrial areas, but should depend on import of most of the metals from foreign countries. Also, global metal consumption amounts are increasing in relation to those of the world's reserve and production. Some metals are limitedly produced from only several centuries, which might lead to instability of the future supply of those metals. In addition, when such metals are hazardous, those may result in various environmental troubles with contamination. To resolve those issues, the recovery and the recycling of hazardous but valuable metals in industrial waste are desirable. However, there are overwhelming numbers of the metal types, waste generators, and amounts of wastes containing the metals, so it can be troublesome even to implement a preliminary status analysis to screen proper metals, wastes with the metals, and waste producers. Therefore, this study introduces the valuable metals for Korean industry, announced by public institutions, Also, a flow chart is suggested to facilitate a preliminary status analysis, using the domestic PRTR (Pollutant Release and Transfer Register) database, to screen proper waste producers containing some of hazardous but valuable metals such as nickel, cobalt, and manganese.

Recently, waste printed circuit board (PCB) has significantly increased in its amount due to the rapid development of electronic industries. Since several kinds of noxious materials and also valuable metals are contained in it, the waste PCB is in an urgent need of recycling for the dual purposes for the prevention of environmental pollution and recovery of valuable resources. Also, the catalyst which equipped in the exhaust pipes of automobiles to reduce emission of air pollutants contains precious met-als so that their recovery from the waste auto-catalysts is required. In this study, the recovery of valuable metals from waste PCB and auto-catalyst by arc furnace melting process has been investigated, which is known to be very stable and suitable f3r less production of pollutants due to its high operating temperature. The effect of the kind of flux on the recovery of precious metals was examined by using quicklime, converter slag, and copper slag as the flux. In addition, the influence of direct and alternating current and the applying direction of direct current has been investigated. It was observed that using converter or copper slag as a flux was more desirable for a higher efficiency in the precious metal recovery compared with quicklime. For the effect of current, application of direct current taking the bottom as a negative pole generally showed a better efficiency for the extraction of valuable metals from waste PCB, which was also observed for the case of waste auto-catalyst. The average recovery of precious metals from both wastes by arc furnace melting process was very high, which was up to in the range of 95~97%.
The car industry is one of the technological applications which more rare earth metals employes as three-way catalysts. Therefore, the recovery of rare earth metals from the used automotive three-way catalysts could be important source to obtain these metals. This work presents the analysis of market and demand for rare earth metal in automotive three-way catalyst and introduces the dry and the wet processes for the recovery of rare earth metals from used three-way catalyst. Finally, the alternative methods to conventional wet processes was simply suggested based on the economic and ecological point of view.
This paper focuses on the study of the most recent ultra-filtration techniques, based on porous polymer membranes, used for the treatment of wastewater from oil, mine and hydrometallurgical industries. The performance of porous membranes used in separation and recovery of oil and heavy metals from wastewater, was evaluated by the polymer composition and by the membrane characteristics, as it follows: hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity, porosity, carrier (composition and concentration), selectivity, fouling, durability, separation efficiency and operating conditions. The oil/water efficient separation was observed on ultra-filtration (UF) techniques, with porous membranes, whereas heavy metals recovery from wastewater was observed using porous membranes with carrier. It can be concluded, that in the ultra-filtration wastewater treatments, a hybrid system, with porous polymer membranes with or without carrier, can be used for these two applications: oil/water separation and heavy metals recovery.
The utilization of incineration ash from municipal waste must be promoted to solve the social problem on the shortage of final disposal site. In this research, metals should be recovered to avoid the damage of the crushing machine during the utilization of incineration ash in cement industry. In fact, incineration bottom ash from municipal waste contains iron in 3-5%. Nonferrous metal and stainless steel in 1% is also included. The research and development on the physical recovery process was performed not only to remove the metals but also to recover high grade products. Metals were separated from incineration ash in Maruya Co. Ltd.. In fact, iron scrap recovered by magnetic separation can be selled. After that, mixed metal was separated from incineration ash using screen. In this research, mixed metal tried to divided copper, aluminum, brass and stainless steel using drum type magnetic separation, eddy current separation and high magnetic separation. As a result, recovered iron had an 80% for the grade. Aluminum was recovered by eddy current separation without copper and brass.
Prior to discuss on recycling status and future prospects for the non-ferrous metals in the Korea, Japan and U.S.A. respectively, worldwide resources of non-ferrous metals and characteristics with recycling of non-ferrous metals are reviewed. In case of recovery non-ferrous metals, recycling of automobile shredder dust and E.A.F. dust are illustrated. Finally, the problems and technological developments associated with recycling of non-ferrous metals are summarized.
