  • The two reactions between iron ion (Fe3+ ) and o-chlorophenylfluorone (o-CPF) and copper ion (Cu2+ ) and o-CPF are sensitive at pH 6 in the presence of Triton X-100. We have determined the formation constants of the complexes by the spectral correction technique. Because of the poor selectivity of o-CPF to metals, the competition coordination of only the iron ion from the Cu-o-CPF complex was found and applied to the selective detection of iron traces by the Selective Competition Coordination Determination (SCCD) approach. The analysis of several samples shows that the relative standard deviations are less than 5.0% and the recovery of iron ions between 94.5% and 106%.

  • A basic study on the recovery of heavy metals such as Zn, Ni, Cu and Fe ions from wastewater was carried out with the spent iron oxide catalyst, which was used in the Styrene Monomer(SM) production company. The heavy metals could be recovered more than 98% with the spent iron oxide catalyst. The alkaline components of the spent catalyst could be precipitated the metal ions of the wastewater as metal hydroxides at the higher pH 10.6 in Ni, pH 8.0 in Cu, pH 6.5 in Fe, pH 8.5 in Zn. But the metal ions are adsorbed physically on the surface of the spent catalyst in the range of the pH of the metal hydroxides and pH 3.0, which is the isoelectric point of the iron oxide catalyst.

  • Electrochemical regeneration of the iron chloride waste solution from PCB etching reduces environmental contamination and produces copper as by-product, so the economic feasibility is high. But iron chloride waste solution contains iron and copper and the reactions occurring in the electrolytic cell are complicated. In this work, the oxidation of iron chloride and copper deposition were examined through batch electrolysis and the optimum conditions of the process parameters were found. The oxidation of ferrous chloride was achieved easily to the desired level. The copper deposition efficiency was high in the reaction using the carbon cathode when the copper density was 12 g/L with the electric current density of $350mA/cm^2$, and the ratio of the $Fe^{2+}$ ion was high. In addition, the possibility of the scale-up was confirmed in continuous operation of bench reactor using the optimum conditions obtained.

  • In order to recover gold from iron-hydroxide in acid mine drainage, a lead-fire assay has been used. Acid mine drainage is generated from mining waste rocks, and iron-hydroxide precipitates from acid mine drainage, which severely contaminates the area surrounding the mine. Iron-hydroxide samples contain on average 520.29 mg/kg of Fe, 4,414.62 mg/kg sulfur, and 16.19 mg/kg Au. In an XRD analysis, quartz and goethite were observed along with the iron-hydroxide. Using a lead-fire assay, the recovery of pure gold was on average 0.174 g/ton from the iron-hydroxide, whereas the gold not recovered in the process was on average 1.37 mg/kg. This unrecovered gold was lost to the glass slag due to the galena and lead formation. The galena and lead in the glass slag was identified through XRD.

  • In order to develope domestic carburizers, the experiment was carried out by applying crystallization heat treatment to domestic anthracites and also to foreign products to compare with domestic anthracites. The present work was mainly concerned with the effect of their degree of crystallization of carbon-bearing materials on carbon pick-up in molten iron. Those effects were evaluated by the measurement of density, chemical composition, specific electric resistivity, and X-ray intensity of carbon-bearing materials. Experimental results thus obtained were summurized as follows. 1. The degree of crystallization of domestic anthracites and foreign products was increased with increasing heat treatment temperature. 2. The more degree of crystallization, the shorter the dissolving time of domestic anthracites in molten iron was obtained, while that of foreign products was remained constant. 3. As the degree of crystallization of domestic anthracites and foreign products was increased, the carbon content as well as carbon recovery in molten iron was increased.

  • The composites of alginate, carbon nanotube, and iron(III) oxide were prepared for the removal of heavy metal in aqueous pollutant. Both alginate and carbon nanotube were used as an adsorbent material and iron oxide was introduced for the easy recovery after removal of heavy metal to eliminate the secondary pollution. The morphology of composites was investigated by FE-SEM showing the carbon nanotubes coated with alginate and the iron oxide dispersed in the alginate matrix. The ferromagnetic properties of composites were shown by including iron(III) oxide additive. The copper ion removal was investigated with ICP AES. The copper ion removal efficiency increased greatly over 60% by using alginate-carbon nanotube composites.

  • Nd-Fe-B waste permanent magnet contains about 20~30% rare earth elements and about 60~70% iron elements, and the rare earth and iron components were recovered through sulfuric acid leaching and fractional crystallization. Oxidation roasting was not performed for separation and recover of the rare earth and iron elements. The leaching characteristics were confirmed by using as variables the sulfuric acid concentration and the mineral solution concentration ratio. Sulfuric acid leaching was carried out for 3 hours for each sulfuric acid concentration. The leached solid phase was characterized for its crystalline phase, composition, and quantitative components by XRD and XRF analysis, and the filtrate was analyzed for components by ICP analysis. With sulfuric acid leaching at 3M sulfuric acid concentration, neodymium compounds were formed, the iron content was the least, and the recovery rate was high. After the filtrate remaining after sulfuric acid leaching was subjected to fractional crystallization through evaporation and concentration, the neodymium component was found to be concentrated 7.0 times and the iron component 2.8 times. In this study, the recovery rate of waste permanent magnets through sulfuric acid leaching and a fractional crystallization method without an oxidation and roasting process was confirmed to be about 99.4%.

  • Phosphorus exhibits considerable segregation in steelmaking slag. In order to recover phosphorus from slag to $K_3PO_4$ via molten iron, a carbothermic reaction using microwave heating was suggested recently. The carbothermic reduction of phosphorus from slag to molten iron using microwave heating was carried out at 2073K. However, at this temperature the thermodynamic properties of both slag and molten iron cannot be determined experimentally. Therefore, the computational approach of the so-called CALPHAD method is very useful to understand the transfer of phosphorus from slag to metal and to enhance this reaction. In the present investigation, a theoretical study of the reduction behavior of phosphorus in slag was carried out at much lower temperatures using the recently developed thermodynamic database in the FactSage program. The calculated results showed reasonable accordance with the experimental data; namely, the thermodynamic database could be applied successfully to higher temperature reactions. The current study found that higher temperature and high $SiO_2$ concentration are favorable for the recovery of phosphorus from slag.

  • The degree of iron recovery from dust agglomerates was investigated experimentally to determine the optimum mixing ratio of coke in cold bonded pellet(CBP) which is fed into electric arc furnace(EAE) in the minimill plant. From the XRD analysis for EAF dust, magnetite(Fe$_3$O$_4$) and franklinite(ZnFe$_2$O$_4$) was identified as major components. Maximum iron recovery was obtained for the solid carbon content of approximately 18 weight percent. From plant trials of CBP composed of this optimal mixing condition, it was observed that electric power consumption and sulfur content increased with increasing the quantity of CBP.

  • Iron component in wasted hydrochloric etching solutions from steel works were recovered by electrolysis. The electric conductances of the solutions, as the function of the bath temperature and the ferrousion concen-tration, were measured and the result of the original solution was K=(0.0012+0.0005$\times$10-3T-0.1160$\times$10-6T2)$\times$102S.m-1(T in $^{\circ}C$) The current efficiency was better for the bath using a soluble steel plate anode than for the bath using an insoluble platinized titanium one. Densed electrolytic iron having the purity of higher than 99.99% was ob-tained at the electrolysis conditions of the cathodic current density of 15A/dm2, the bath temperature of $70\pm$$5^{\circ}C$ and the ferrous ion concentration of about 100g/l. The morphologies of the deposited iron were observed by SEM.
