Despite various types of online social networks having different topological and functional characteristics, the kinds of online social networks considered in social recommendations are highly restricted. The pervasiveness of social networks has brought scholarly attention to expanding the scope of social recommendations into more diverse and less explored types of online social networks. As a preliminary attempt, this study examined the information-sharing patterns of a new type of online social network - unilateral (directed) network - and assessed the feasibility of the network as a useful information source. Specifically, this study mainly focused on the presence of shared interests in unilateral networks, because the shared information is the inevitable condition for utilizing the networks as a feasible source of personalized recommendations. As the results, we discovered that user pairs with direct and distant links shared significantly more similar information than the other non-connected pairs. Individual users' social properties were also significantly correlated with the degree of their information similarity with social connections. We also found the substitutability of online social networks for the top cohorts anonymously chosen by the collaborative filtering algorithm.

The seismic design recommendations of the Jordan Code for Loads and Forces (JC) are evaluated, based on comparisons with analytical studies and the Uniform Building Code. It was established that the overall safety ensured by the implementation of these recommendations is not consistent with the established seismic risk in Jordan and the intended objectives of the code. A new zoning map is proposed with effective peak ground acceleration values. The different period formulae of the code were studied and were found to grossly underestimate the fundamental period when compared with analytically derived values or other codes' formulae. Other factors including the dynamic, soil, importance and behavior factors are discussed. It was determined that the JC's lateral load distribution formulae clearly lead to smaller internal forces than both dynamic analysis and UBC loads, even when those loads are normalized to give the same base shear. The main reason for this is attributed to the limited allowance for a backlash force in the JC.

Purpose: This study was to develop an evidence-based clinical practice protocol of physical restraints by adaptation process for patients with a geriatric hospital. Methods: Protocol adaptation process was conducted in accordance with manual for guideline adaptation version 1.0 by ADAPTE collaboration. Results: The adapted physical restraint protocol was consisted of 3 domains and 37 recommendations. The number of recommendations in each domain were: 7 nursing assessment, 19 nursing intervention, and 11 nursing evaluation. More than half (56.8%) of the recommendations were rated as grade B, 37.8% as grade C, and 5.4% were rated as grade D. Conclusion: The adapted physical restraint protocol is expected to contribute as an evidence-based clinical practice protocol for healthcare workers in geriatric hospitals for reducing and improving efficiency of appropriate physical restraints use.

Non-linear large-displacement elasto-plastic finite element analyses are used to propose design recommendations for the eaves bracket of a cold-formed steel portal frame. Owing to the thinness of the sheet steel used for the brackets, such a structural design problem is not trivial as the brackets need to be designed against failure through buckling; without availability of the finite element method, expensive laboratory testing would therefore be required. In this paper, the finite element method is firstly used to predict the plastic moment capacity of the eaves bracket. Parametric studies are then used to propose design recommendations for the eaves bracket against two potential buckling modes of failure: (1) buckling of the stiffened free-edge into one-half sine wave, (2) local plate buckling of the exposed triangular bracket area.The results of full-scale laboratory tests on selected geometries of eaves bracket demonstrate that the proposed design recommendations are conservative. The use of the finite element method in this way exploits modern computational techniques for an otherwise difficult structural design problem.

The preferences of customers change over time. However, existing collaborative filtering (CF) systems are static, since they only incorporate information regarding whether a customer buys a product during a certain period and do not make use of the purchase sequences of customers. Therefore, the quality of the recommendations of the typical CF could be improved through the use of information on such sequences. In this paper, we propose a new methodology for enhancing the quality of CF recommendation that uses customer purchase sequences. The proposed methodology is applied to a large department store in Korea and compared to existing CF techniques. Various experiments using real-world data demonstrate that the proposed methodology provides higher quality recommendations than do typical CF techniques, with better performance, especially with regard to heavy users.

Due to the explosion of e-commerce, recommender systems are rapidly becoming a core tool to accelerate cross-selling and strengthen customer loyalty. There are two prevalent approaches for building recommender systems - content-based recommending and collaborative filtering. Collaborative filtering recommender systems have been very successful in both information filtering domains and e-commerce domains, and many researchers have presented variations of collaborative filtering to increase its performance. However, the current research on recommendation has paid little attention to the use of time related data in the recommendation process. Up to now there has not been any study on collaborative filtering to reflect changes in user interest. This paper proposes dynamic fuzzy clustering algorithm and apply it to collaborative filtering algorithm for dynamic recommendations. The proposed methodology detects changes in customer behavior using the customer data at different periods of time and improves the performance of recommendations using information on changes. The results of the evaluation experiment show the proposed model's improvement in making recommendations.

Recommendations for older driver-friendly automobile interior design have been determined by taking into account older people's physical and cognitive characteristics. Twenty three older people (aged from 54 to 78) and five younger people (from 20 to 29) performed several tasks in actual driving conditions, in which their reaction times and performance errors were recorded. Some design factors were found to be related to older drivers' visibility and controllability. Several design recommendations were proposed in terms of cluster color and font, display location, and HVAC control type. Proposed recommendations are expected to satisfy a wider range of older drivers as these will facilitate automobile interior designs which are fitter to older drivers' visual, cognitive, and manual capabilities.

Recently several recommender systems have been developed in a variety of applications, but providing accurate recommendations that match the preferences and constraints of various users is quite challenging. This paper presents a method of recommending digital products based on the past preference of a user on the price, rating and selling volume of a product. Experimental results of the method with actual data of Amazon showed that the average accuracy of the recommendations made by the method is 85%. Although the results are preliminary, the method is potentially capable of making more accurate personalized recommendations than existing methods.

Purpose - The objectives of this study are to find the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to the national innovation system of Iran (using a SWOT analysis) and to extract some strategic recommendations to modify the innovation policies of Iran. Research design, data, and methodology - This study used a literature review and field study. In the first phase, the author studied library resources and articles, and browsed through Internet information about the subject. The second phase was a field research investigation through designed questionnaires and interviews with more than 100 policymakers, officials, executives, and others related to the national innovation system in 2011. Results - In this research study, strategic recommendations were extracted through a SWOT model for improvements to the innovation policies of Iran. Conclusions - The findings of this study show the role of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the national innovation system of Iran and suggest strategic recommendations for its modification.

The present study examines the relative roles of external recommendations and internally felt satisfaction in influencing patient loyalty to a doctor. It establishes that recommendations do result in preliminary loyalty formation in the patient to the doctor, but only until the formation of own experiences; the significance of external sources of recommendation in the determination of patient loyalty becomes insignificant thenceforth. Implications for the doctors are that they should strive at fostering bonds of emotional attachment in their present patients so that they become strongly loyal and spread positive word-of-mouth which could result in the doctor getting new patients as well. Probable extensions of this research are also discussed later in the paper.
