  • To select the forage millet variety suitable for cultivation in the reclaimed tideland, forage yield and feed value were compared for six millet cultivars grown at the Dae-Ho reclaimed tideland, Korea, from March to October in 2004. The emergency rate of summer green was 95.0% which was more than those of any other vatieties. Fresh and dry matter yield of summer green were 21,444 and 5,296 kg/ha that were more than those of any other vatieties. respectively. The content of crude protein was the highest in Shirohie variety as 18.22%. TDN (total digestible nutrient) content was the highest in Siberian variety and the lowest in Panorama variety. Considering the emergency rate, forage production and feed value, Summer green was the most suitable variety in reclaimed tidelands.

  • To understand salinity status of fresh water and paddy soils and the susceptibility of rice to salinity stress of Gunnae reclaimed tidelands, salinity monitoring was conducted in rainy and dry seasons. For fresh water, a high salinity was observed at the sampling location near the sluice gate and decreased with distance from the gate. This spatial pattern of fresh water salinity indicates the necessity of spatial distribution of salinity in the assessment of salinity status of fresh water. Interestingly, there was significant correlation between rainfall amount and salinity, implying that salinity of fresh water varies with rainfall and thus it may be possible to predict salinity of water using rainfall. Soil salinity also higher near the gate, reflecting the influence of high saline water. In addition, the groundwater salinity also high to threat rice growth. Though soil salinity status indicated low possibility of sodium injury, there was changes in soil salinity status during the course of rice growth, suggesting that more intensive monitoring of soil salinity may be necessary for soil salinity assessment. Our study suggests the necessity of intensive salinity monitoring to understand the spatio-temporal variations of salinity of water and soil of reclaimed tideland areas.

  • Accumulation of excessive salt in Reclaimed coastal tidelands can reduce crop yields, reduce the effectiveness of irrigation, degradation of soil structure, and affect other soil properties. These salts has shown to cause specific ions in the plant over a period of time leads to ion toxicity or ion imbalance and a continuous osmotic phase that prevents water uptake by plants due to osmotic pressure of saline soil solution. This review focuses on the characteristics of salt-affected soils, mechanisms of salt-tolerance plants, desalinization technology, and soil management to maintain sustainable agro-ecosystem in salt-affected soils.

  • This laboratory study was carried out in order to produce fundamental data for analyzing salt movement and desalinization effects, using samples of silt loam soil collected in Gyehwado and Daeho reclaimed tidelans, and samples of silty clay loam soil collected in Kimie tideland. Desalinization experiments with gypsum treatment were performed to analyze changes of the hydraulicc conductivity with changes of the soil property and the salt concentration during the desalinization of reclaimed tideland soils by leaching through the subsufface drainage, and correlations between factors infl uencing the reclamation of salt affected soils were analyzed by the statistical method. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The reclaimed tideland soils used in this study were saline-sodic soils with the high exchangeable sodium percentage and the high electrical conductivity. 2. Changes of the hydraulic conductivity with the amount of leaching water and the leaching time elapsed were affected by the amount of gypsum except exchangeable sodium and clay contents. The regression equation between the depth of water leached per unit depth of soil (Dw / Ds : X) or the square root of the leaching time elapsed (T $^1$ $^2$ : X) and the relative hydraulic conductivity (HCr:Y) could be expressed in Y=a . bx. 3. The more exchangeable sodium and clay contents regardless of the amount of gypsum, the more the leaching time was required until a given volume of water was leached through the soil profile. The regression analysis showed that the relationship between the depth of water leached per unit depth of soil(Dw /Ds:X) and the square root of the leaching time elapsed(T$^1$$^2$ :Y) could be described by Y=a . Xb. 4. The hydraulic conductivity was influenced to a major degree by the salt concentration provided that the electrical conductivity was below 10 mmhos / cm during the desalinization of reclaimed tideland soils. The regression equation between the relative electrical conductivity ( ECr : X) and the relative hydraulic conductivity (HCr:Y) could be expressed in Y=a + b . X-$^1$. 5. In conclusion, the hydraulic conductivity, leaching requirements and the leaching time elapsed can be estimated when the salt concentration decreases to a certain level during the desalinization of reclaimed tidelands, and the results may be applied to the analysis of salt movement and desalinization effects.

  • The newly designed mole drainage plower which is attached to tractor is tested for work capacity comparing with the pulling by man animal and winch. Besides. the effect of desalinization by the mole drainage in reclaimed tideland was observed. The results as obtained in this experiment are as follows: 1. The mole drainage plower of tractor attachment has higher work capacity by 3 to 5 times than that of winch 2. The suitable soil moisture content to carry out the layout of mole drains is from 21 to 25 percent. 3. The new design mole drainage plower requires th lowest cost as comparing with the other methods. 4. Carrying out the mole drainage in reclaimed tideland it is effective in desalinization from 2 to 3 times than the only use of irrigation water. 5. The reasonable depth and interval of mole drains may be 60cm and 3m respectively. 6. The desalinization by the mole drainage increases the yield of rice from 40 to 45 percent in reclaimed tideland.

  • The laboratory model test was conducted by dividing domestic reclaimed tideland into Sandy Loam (SL) and Silt Clay Loam (SiCL) to estimate soil moisture change and water supply according to soil characteristic when establishing irrigation plan for reclaimed tideland upland crop. In addition, the applicability of each scenario was verified using Van Genuchten model, which is the most widely used mathematical model for analyzing soil moisture characteristics of reclaimed tideland uplands crops. The required water supply according to the target soil moisture tension by reclaimed tideland is as follow. In the case of SL, soil depths of 0~10 cm, 10~20 cm were analyzed as 19 mm, 35 mm to reach the field capacity, and SiCL, 33 mm, 63 mm. The required water supply of SiCL was higher than that of SL. The study compared the simulation results from the scenarios of Van Genuchen model and the measured results from the laboratory model test based on according to the reclaimed tidelands. In the case of parameter, θs, θr, α, η were analyzed 0.55, 0.18, 0.064, 1.74 in SL and 0.46, 0.22, 0.105, 1.92 in SiCL. In terms of soil characteristics, SL with better water permeability was found to have higher applicability than SiCL. By Soil depth, applicability was found in 0~10 cm directly affected by water supply.

  • The high salt concentration of reclaimed tidelands in the beginning of reclamation interferes with the growth of most crops. Although the crops are cultivated in the unripened tidal reclaimed paddy fields after desalinization to be arable, they we apt to be injured from salt by the resalinization through accumulated salts in the root zone during the growing period. In oder to make the reasonable irrigation plan in the unripened tidal reclaimed paddy fields, the preventive water requirements of resalinization as well as leaching requirements have to be included in irrigation water requirements. The critical salinity for the normal growth of crops should be determined to estimate the preventive water requirements of resalinization, and the changes of salinity in soil and water should be analyzed during the growing period, In this study, the growth tests of crops were conducted by soil textures and water management methods in the experimental field with lysimeters, using the samples of good drainage soils and poor drainage soils. And the changes of salinity in soil and water during the growing period, were analyzed to obtain the basic data for determining the critical salinity and making the estimation criteria of the preventive water requirements of resalinization. As the results obtained from analyzing the changes of salinity during the growing period in the unripened tidal reclaimed paddy fields, the exchanging interval of water for the prevention of resalinization was estimated to be within two weeks in good drainage soils and a week in poor drainage soils. And the total exchanging requirements of water for the prevention of resalinization during the growing period was estimated to be over 280mm in good drainage soils and 540mm in poor drainage soils.

  • Tideland reclamation in Korea has significant meanings both in securing the staple food supply and in enlarging the limited land resources. Environmentally, that significantly contributes in protecting the sea and the tidelands connected to a reclaimed area from the direct exposure to the environmental destruction by filtering the large volume of contaminant discharged from the inland. Furthermore, within few years after closing a sea dike. formulation of new tideland begins in wide area in front. Therefore, tideland reclamation should not be the one that must be unconditionally objected. Instead, the methodology should be wisely redirected to minimize the environmental disorder. It will be one viable alternative to proceed the tideland reclamation at medium- to small-scales environment-friendly bringing minimal environmental change in the sea.
