  • Permeation water resulting in the reclaimed land of waste can possibly cause the second pollution, such as the underground water and environmental pollution. Accordingly, Liner layer has been installed in the reclaimed land of waste to block and purify permeation water and prevent this second pollution. The material used as Liner layer is the one for water resistance and that of less than permeability coefficient $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$ is widely used. As it is very difficult to secure in bulk this natural clay with low permeability around the field, the suitable way to secure low permeable material is that we use blend with good watertighness by mixing it with natural soil which is spread in the site. While this mixed soil which can resist water is commonly used in the site, bentonite mixed soil which is widely used as Liner layer in the reclaimed land of waste is recognized in Liner and durability. In this study, the engineering characteristics of soil-bentonite mixed liner are investigated using the laboratory hydraulic conductivity and uni-axial strength tests. The soil used for the liner is the clay soil located near the site. Mixing ratio of the bentonite which satisfies the requirement of hydraulic conductivity is determined and the optimum mixing ratio of bentonite is recommended for the landfill. After the mixed liner is constructed using the optimum mixing ratio of bentonite, the block samples of the constructed liner are obtained and the strength tests were performed. The hydraulic and strength properties of the liner for construction of the waste landfill were both satisfactory.

  • Recently, the reclamation of public waters has been on a downward trend due to environmental problems, but there is a limitation to evaluating environmental characteristics index uniformly. In this study, the stability of settlement behavior on public waters reclaimed land was analyzed using the experimental test. From the primary consolidation influence factors, the characteristics of the waste lime was similar that of clay in process of consolidation. Assuming that the waste lime landfill is the layer reinforced with thin geosynthetic reinforcement, the settlement was predicted by calculating the amount of increase using the Westergaard method. As a result of predicting settlement with degree of consolidation, it was found that the increase in stress was reduced by 40% when the surface layer of the soft ground was reinforce with geotextiles compared to the case where it was not reinforced. In addition, the consolidation behavior characteristics of clay and waste lime were compared using the correlation between the plasticity index and internal friction angle of waste lime. Since the waste lime in the public process of consolidation, it was predicted that long-term settlement will increase further.

  • The objectives of this paper were to simply estimate soil loss levels as caused by wind in reclaimed tidal flat land (RTFL) and the threshold wind velocity in the RTFL. For this experiment, RTFL located at Haenam Bay was selected and a total of 150 soil samples were collected at the Ap horizon from the five soil series. The particle distribution curves, including the limit of the non-erodible particle size (D > 0.84 mm) for each Ap horizon soil, show that the proportions of non-erodible particle sizes that exceeded 0.84 mm were 4.3% (Taehan, TH), 8.9% (Geangpo, GP), 0.5% (Bokchun, BC), 1.6% (Poseung, PS) and 1.4% (Junbook, JB), indicating that the amount of non-erodible soil particles increased with an increase in the sand content. The average monthly, daily and instantaneous wind velocities were higher than the threshold friction velocity (TFV) calculated according to the dynamic velocity (Vd) by Bagnold, while the average monthly wind velocity was lower than those of the TFV suggested by the revised wind erosion equation (RWEQ) and wind erosion prediction system (WEPS). The susceptible proportions of erodible soil particles from the Ap horizon soil samples from each soil series could be significantly influenced by the proportion of sand particles between 0.025 and 0.5 mm (or 0.84 mm) in diameter regardless of the threshold wind velocity. Thus, further investigations are needed to estimate more precisely soil erosion in RTFL, which shows various soil characteristics, as these estimations of soil loss in the five soil series were obtained only when considering wind velocities and soil textures.

  • Clonal growth and rhizome architecture of calmagrostis epigeios, were studied in a 15-year old coastal reclamed land. As c. epigeios patch grew from center to margin radially over time, concentric annuli were added. the radial increases of the mature patch were 80~130cm/yr. the patch ages of c. epigeios estimated by relationships between the diameter and is radial increament, were 1~6year old. There were the marked variations of density, phytomass, shoot height and inflorecence frequency with increasing age of rhizome system within the patch. the maximum performance occurred at 2-year-old concentric annuli of the patch. The growth phasic continuum with aging was divided into 5 grwth phases ; pioneer, building, matyre, senile and degenerate. The rhizome aging had a more significant effect on the inflorescence frequency than on the other attributes. new rhizomes tended to diverge from the direction of the parent ramet by sympodial growth. in a 1-year-old patch, average length of rhizome segment was 7cm, average number of internode was 6, and the tillering frequency was 27%. The tillering in the early stage resultd in the increase of shoot density and the producation of multibranching rhizome. as the result of that, circular patchwas formed in a year. The branching structure based on such facts was represented graphically in branching degree of 60 and 100. therefore, c. epigeios with clonal growth may establish and grow vigorously earlier than other glycophytes in high salt conditions such as the coastal reclaimed land.

  • Reclaimed land was mainly used as agricultural land for rice production. As a higher value-added business in the agriculture has recently been activated, green houses are being constructed. In case of green house construction on the reclaimed land, it is generally soft ground with high soil water content, so it is important to design the foundation for greenhouse construction. The object of this study, a pull-out test was conducted to derive the base line data of the wooden pile foundation when constructing a green house. To reproduce the actual site, 30% of soil saturation and 70% of soil saturation were created in the soil box. Groove number and depth were set as design factors of the wooden pile, and a pull-out test was conducted. As a result of the test, pull resistance increased as the number of grooves increased, pull-out resistance according to groove depth was different according to soil saturation. Also, after the experiment, we want to compare the set-up effects over time.

  • Assessing for flora distribution is necessary for land management and environmental research in reclaimed lands. This study was conducted to find out the relationship between vegetation distribution and soil salinity on three reclaimed tidal flats of Kyonggi-bay in the mid-west coast of Korea. We investigated the soil salinity and identified the vegetation at the continuum distribution spots, and describe the characteristics of continuum distribution. On the reclaimed tidal flats, spatial variation of vegetation formed partially, however as the result for connection of each spatial variation along with the soil salinity, continuum distribution formed and it was overlapped edaphic gradient with vegetation distribution, it means that the continuum distribution correspond with soil salinity gradient, as the evidence high salt tolerance species occurred at high saline spots, non salt tolerance species occurred at low saline spots. On the aged reclaimed tidal flats, continuum type was various and also clearly distinguished but it was not clear on the early stage of reclamation. The continuum distribution distinguished sequential and non-sequential type. Sequential type started from high saline zone and connected to low saline zone gradually, on this type, vegetation changed from pioneer halophyte to facultative halophyte and glycophyte along with the salinity gradient. Non-sequential type formed by non-sequential change of soil salinity, on this type, vegetation distribution was non-regular form because it has not changed gradually. In the aged reclaimed land, vegetation wilted zone existed with high salinity, and continuum distribution started from this zone with bare patch.

  • This study surveyed the actual status of reclamation areas in South Pyongan Province, North Korea, using satellite images and literature to survey the creation date, area, and length of the embankment of the reclamation areas. The reclamation areas in South Pyongan Province were created in three stages, with the first stage completed in the late 1970s or early 1980s, the second stage in the late 1980s or early 1990s, and the third stage in the 2000s. The total area of the reclamation areas is 105,570 hectares. The land cover of the reclamation areas is as follows: agriculture (50.5%), saltern (29.5%), water bodies (13.6%), foreshore (12.4%), grasslands (3.0%), bare land (0.4%), facility (0.1%), and forests (0.1%). The study also found that the NDVI values of the reclamation areas vary depending on the location. The NDVI values of the Gwiseong and Namyang reclamation areas are low, while the NDVI values of the Samcheonpo and Jigdongbaedali reclamation areas are high. The study found that the NDVI values of the reclamation areas are correlated with the land cover of the reclamation areas. The study's findings can be used to understand the development direction and regional characteristics of the reclamation areas in South Pyongan Province. The study's findings can also be used to develop policies and plans for the sustainable development and utilization of the reclamation areas in South Pyongan Province.

  • This study was performed to produce basic data for developing prediction techniques of desalinization through analyzing soil properties of reclaimed tidal lands, using soil samples collected in 11 units of tidal land reclamation projects. The average apparent specific gravity (bulk density), real specific gravity (particle density), porosity, and saturation percentage were measured to be 1.33, 2.64, 49.6%, and 56.3%, respectively. It was estimated that the soil texture class of reclaimed tidal lands would be silt or silt loam. The electrical conductivity and exchangeable sodium percentage were estimated to be $20{\sim}40dS\;m^{-1}$ and 30~50% in the beginning of tidal land reclamation, and the value of pH was measured to be 6.5~7.9. In conclusion, the soil properties of reclaimed tidal lands could be descrived to be saline-sodic soils with the high electrical conductivity and exchangeable sodium percentage.

  • This study was carried out to obtain reasonable management method of salt-affected soil for ecological restoration in the reclaimed land. Chemical properties of reclaimed soil was investigated base on reclamation years. Ionic acitivity in soil and satruration extract were analyzed to estimate the effect of salt interception by planting ground treatment. The soil porperties of reclaimed land was saline-sodic soil with $11.3dSm^{-1}$ of electrical conductivity, 34.8% of exchangeable sodium percent in first reclamation year. Electrical conductivity, exchangeable sodium and exchangeable chlorine were remarkedly decreased during six years after reclamation but chemical properties of reclaimed soil was unsuitable status for tree growth. Exchangeable sodium perecnt was higher in the neighborhood parks and street tree sites than in the buffer green spaces and was higher in subsoil than in topsoil of profile in all sites. Content of soduim, chloride and sulfate in saturation extract were more than other ions. Content of soduim and chloride were higher in the neighborhood parks and street tree sites than in the buffer green spaces and were higher in subsoil than in topsoil. Content of calcium plus magnesium of soil was higher in the buffer green space than in the neighborhood park and street tree but content of calcium and magnesium in saturation extract were higher, as result from exchangeable sodium, in the neighborhood parks and street tree sites than in the buffer green spaces. Concentration of salt in soil showed the difference with mounding height and planting ground treatment. The lowest concentration of salt appeared in buffer green spaces and street tree sites was the highest. Salt interception by mounding height in the same planting ground treatment was more effective 120cm of mounding height than 70cm of mounding height.

  • The main objective of this study was to identify the best quality rice for cultivation on reclaimed land in Jeollabukdo-Province based on yield, head rice ratio, protein content, amylose content, and Toyo taste value evaluations. Seven varieties of rice were grown for two years on the reclaimed land. The Sukwang variety had the earliest heading date. The tiller number for the Younghojinmi variety was 19 on average, and its variation in tiller number was the lowest, which showed that the safety for cultivation of the variety was high on the reclaimed land with respect to that of the other varieties. The culm and panicle lengths of the Sukwang and Hyunpum varieties were the highest at 81.8 and 21.3 cm, respectively. Shindongjin produced the highest thousand grain weight at 27.7 g, whereas Haepum produced the lowest at 22.3 g. The number of grains per panicle for 7 all varieties was statistically equal for both years. The yield order for the varieties was Shindongjin (590) > Hopum (575) > Younghojinmi (552) > Sukwang (551) > Hopum (543) > Mipum (534) > Haepum (498 kg/10a), which showed that there was no significant difference in average yield between the varieties when both years are taken into consideration. However, the annual difference in Haepum yield between 2015 and 2016 was the highest at 108 kg/10a, indicating low cultivation safety. The head rice ratio of Younghojinmi was higher than for the other cultivars in both 2015 and 2016. However, there was no significant difference between the 2 years when the averages for all varieties were analyzed. There was was a considerable difference in protein and amylose content between the varieties in the two years, although this was not apparent in the results when the average over 2 years for each variety was calculated. There was no significant difference between the two years with respect to the average head rice ratio, and the protein and amylose contents of the seven varieties. The Toyo taste values for the Sukwang and Mipum varieties were higher than for the other varieties. Based on the principle characteristics, such as Toyo value, the Sukwang variety is a suitable substitute for Shindongjin, which has been previously used to produce high-quality rice on the reclaimed land.
