Salt Removal in a Reclaimed Tidal Land Soil with Gypsum, Compost, and Phosphate Amendment

  • High salinity and sodicity of soils play a negative role in producing crops in reclaimed tidal lands. To evaluate the effects of soil ameliorants on salt removal in a highly saline and sodic soil of reclaimed tidal land, we conducted a column experiment with treating gypsum, compost, and phosphate at 0-2 cm depth and measured the salt concentration of leachate and soil. Electrical conductivity of leachate was $45-48dSm^{-1}$ at 1 pore volume (PV) of water and decreased to less than $3dSm^{-1}$ at 3 PV of water. Gypsum significantly decreased SAR (sodium adsorption ratio) of leachate below 3 at 3 PV of water and soil ESP (exchangeable sodium percentage) below 3% for the whole profile of soil column. Compost significantly decreased ESP of soil at 0-5 cm depth to 5% compared with the control (20%). However, compost affected little the composition of cations below a depth of 5 cm and in leachate compared with control treatment. It was concluded that gypsum was effective in ameliorating reclaimed tidal lands at and below a soil layer receiving gypsum while compost worked only at a soil layer where compost was treated.

Prediction of the Salinization in Reclaimed Land by Soil and Groundwater Characteristics

  • It is becoming more important to utilize reclaimed lands in South Korea, due to the increasing competition for its usage among different sectors. However, the high groundwater level and poor permeability are exposing them to deterioration by salinization. Salinization is difficult to predict because the pattern changes according to various characteristics of soil and groundwater. In this study, the capillary rising time was studied by the water content profile in the soil. The prediction equation of soil salinity was developed based on simulation result of the CHEMFLO model. to enable prediction considering various soil water content and groundwater level. The two terms constituting the equation showed the coefficients of determination of 0.9816 and 0.9824, respectively. Using the prediction equation of the study, the surface salinity can be easily predicted from the initial surface salinity and the salinity of the groundwater. In the future, more precise predictions will be possible with the results of studies on the hydraulic characteristics of various reclaimed soils, changes in water content profile by seasonal and climate events.

정화 처리토가 렌틸(콩과식물)의 지상부 및 뿌리 성장에 주는 영향에 대한 정량평가 (Quantifying Inhibitory Effects of Reclaimed Soils on the Shoot and Root Growth of Legume plant Lentil(Lens culinaris))

  • A series of pot experiments were conducted to quantitatively estimate inhibitory effects of reclaimed soil on the growth of Lentil (Lens culinaris) with two soils remediated by land farming (DDC) and low temperature thermal desorption(YJ), respectively. After cultivation in a growth chamber for 8 days, plants were harvested for the analysis of 8 indices including chlorophyll-a and carotenoid in leaves, shoot fresh weight, root dry weight, root length, number of later roots, specific root length (SRL) as well as germination rate in comparison to control experiment conducted on nursery soil. Root length was estimated by SmartRoot program from the digital images of the roots. The results showed germination rate on YJ and DDC soil decreased 29 and 71%, respectively. In comparison to the control, the averaged value of the 8 indices for YJ and DDC soil showed overall growth inhibition was 48 and 68%, respectively. When the same experiment was conducted with 25% (W/W) vermiculate amended soil, plant growth on each soil was comparable to that of the control. The results implies reclaimed soils requires additional processes and/or amendments to reuse for plant growth.

Design charts for estimating the consolidation times of reclaimed marine clays in Korea

  • To predict the consolidation behavior of dredged and reclaimed marine clays exhibiting consolidation settlement with large strains, the finite strain consolidation theory must be used. However, challenges in appropriately applying the theory and determining input parameters make design and analysis studies difficult. To address these challenges, design charts for predicting the consolidation settlement of reclaimed marine clays are developed by a numerical approach based on the finite strain consolidation theory. To prepare the design charts, a sensitivity analysis of parameters is performed, and influencing parameters, such as initial void ratio and initial height, as well as the non-linear constitutive void ratio-effective stresspermeability relation, are confirmed. Six representative Korean marine clays obtained from different locations with different liquid limits are used. The design charts for estimating the consolidation times corresponding to various degrees of consolidation are proposed for each of the six representative clays. The consolidation settlements predicted from the design charts are compared to those in previous studies and at an actual construction site and are found to agree well with them. The proposed design charts can therefore be used to solve problems related to the consolidation of reclaimed marine clays having large strains.

안산 간척 습지의 식생 생태적 특성 및 관리에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Vegetation Ecological Characteristics and Management of Ansan Reclaimed Wetlands)

  • 대표적인 간척 습지인 경기도 안산 농어촌연구원 배후 습지에서 식물상과 현존식생 현황을 조사하였다. 방형구내에서 출현종의 피도와 빈도를 측정하여 중요도를 계산하고 총질소, 전기전도도, 유효인, 질산태 질소, 도로에서의 거리를 환경 인자로 하여 서열분석(Detrended Canonical Correspondence Analysis)을 수행하였다. 육상 천이로의 진행 상황을 알아보기 위해서 습지내로 침입한 목본의 기저면적을 산출하였다. 조사 결과, 46과 158종의 식물이 기록되었고, 현존 식생으로 갈대가 우점하였다. 서열분석 결과, 종의 분포는 토양내 총질소와 질산태 질소함량에 의해서 유의하게 설명되었다. 기저면적이 $22.3m^2$$1.6m^2$인 아까시나무와 리기다소나무가 습지내부로 침입하여 일부 지역이 육상화되는 교란이 있음을 보여 주었다. 수위 조절과 이동 도로에 의한 구획화가 습지를 훼손하는 원인이 되고 있으므로 이에 대한 조절이 필요함이 제안되었다.

복합지구물리탐사에 의한 매립 문화재 위치 추정 분석 (Analysis for Reclaimed Cultural Asset Location Estimation with Complex Seismic Survey)

  • 매립 문화재 위치 추정에 있어서 비파괴검사인 복합지구물리탐사 방법이 최근에 많이 활용되고 있다. 이러한 탐사방법은 건설 현장에서 효율적으로 빠른 시간 내에 매립 문화재 위치를 추정하는데 있어서 가장 합리적인 방법이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 과거 매립 문화재가 조성되었을 가능성이 있는 지역을 대상으로 그 분포 영역을 파악하기 위해 자력변화율탐사, 전기비저항탐사, 지하투과레이더탐사 방법을 병행하여 매립 문화재 위치를 추정하였다. 본 연구대상지역에서의 연구성과로는 도면좌표로 X축 방향으로 약 +15m, Y축 방향으로 약 +90m에 위치하고 있으며, 장축으로 북북동방향으로 약 20m, 폭이 약 5m의 형태로 나타났고, 예상 이상대 발달분포의 심도는 약 1.5~3.0m인 것으로 추정되었다. 이와 같은 해석 결과로 향후 매립 문화재 예상 지역 및 발굴작업에 있어서 지구물리탐사 방법을 이용한다면 보다 효율적으로 정확한 측정방법을 제시할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

제주지역 하수처리수의 농업용수 재이용 안전성 평가 (Safety Evaluation of a Wastewater Reuse for the Farmland Irrigation in Jeju Island)

  • Safety of reclaimed wastewater irrigation needs to be evaluated to promote public health. Quantitative microbial and toxic risk assessment was conducted to identify the level of risk for farmland workers who use reclaimed wastewater and groundwater in Jeju island. Microbial risk through inhalation and ingestion exposure was below acceptable level (less than $10^{-3}$) of $7.07{\times}10^{-6}$ for reclaimed wastewater and $9.99{\times}10^{-8}$ for groundwater irrigation worker. Aggregate exposure risk of Ni, As and Cu was most contributable to overall risk in both reclaimed wastewater and groundwater irrigation plot. High cumulative exposure risk was estimated through non-dietary soil ingestion and dermal contact of soil, due to the high concentration of As, Cu and Ni in farmland soil. Overall toxic risk was $2.68{\times}10^{-4}$ for reclaimed water and $2.39{\times}10^{-4}$ for groundwater irrigation, which could not meet acceptable toxic risk level of $10^{-6}$. Further efforts, such as provide personal protective equipments or public health education, need to be implicated to reduce adverse health risk.

간척지에서 사료용 피 품종들의 건물수량 및 사료가치 비교 (Comparison of Forage Yield and Feed Value of Millet Varieties in the Reclaimed Tidelands)

  • 본 시험은 제주도에서 재배되고 있는 제주재래 등 총 6품종을 공시하여 피 품종 간의 생초 및 건물수량과 사료가치 등을 조사 분석하여 간척지에서 최적 사료용 피 품종 선발을 위한 기초 자료를 얻기 위해 충청남도 당진군에 소재한 대호간척지에서 1년간 수행하였다. 출현율은 겸용인 Summer green 품종이 95.0%로 가장 높았다. 생초 및 건물수량은 Summer green 품종ol 각각 21,444kg/ha와 5,296.5kg/ha으로 가장 높았다. 조단백질 함량은 Shirohie(18.22%) 품종이 가장 높았다. TDN 함량은 Siberian 품종이 가장 높았으며 Panorama 품종이 가장 낮았다. 결과적으로 간척지 토양에서 사료용 피 재배 시 출현률, 생초 및 건물생산성 그리고 사료가치 등을 종합하여 고려할 때 겸용인 Summer green 품종이 가장 우수하였다.

유기물(有機物) 시용(施用)이 땅콩 생육(生育)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Effects of Organic Materials Application on Growth of Peanut Plant)

  • 숙전(熟田)과 신야산개간지(新野山開懇地) 토양(土壤)에서 유기물(有機物) 종류별(種類別) 시용(施用)이 땅콩의 생육(生育)과 수량(收量) 그리고 토양화학성(土壤化學性)에 미치는 효과(效果)를 검토(檢討)한 결과(結果)는 다음과 같다. 1. 숙전(熟田)에서는 신선(新鮮)한 유기물(有機物)인 볏짚, 왕겨 시용이 수량(收量)을 증가(增加)시켰으나 야산개간지(野山開墾地)에서는 퇴비(堆肥) 시용(施用)이 수량(收量)을 증가(增加)시켰다. 2. 야산개간전(野山開墾田)에서 C/N율(率)이 높은 볏짚, 왕겨 시용구(施用區)가 근류(根瘤) 착생량(着生量)이 많았다. 3. 유기물(有機物) 함량(含量)이 많을수록 야산개간전(野山開墾田)에서 수량(收量)이 증가(增加)되었으나 숙전(熟田)은 경향이 없었다. 4. 시험후(試驗後) 토양중(土壤中) 유기물(有機物) 함량(含量)은 숙전(熟田)에서는 변화(變化)가 없었으나 야산개간전(野山開墾田)은 약간 증가(增加)되는 경향(傾向)이었다.

Natural Ripening versus Artificial Enhancing of Silty Reclaimed Tidal Soils for Upland Cropping Tested by Profile Characterization

  • This study was performed to produce basic data for silty reclaimed tidal lands and to develop techniques of environmentally-friendly utilization in agricultural system. We chose the two sites in Saemangeum reclaimed tidal lands, one (Site I) has been treated with cultivating green manure and conducting the desalinization process through submergence since April, 2007 and the other (Site II) has been under natural condition without artificial treatment. In situ and ex situ physic-chemical properties were determined and comparisons were made for soil profiles examined at these two sites in April 2009. Surface soil of Site I had lower EC and higher field saturated hydraulic conductivity than those of Site II, uncultivated land. Especially, exchangeable sodium content was lowest in Site I Ap1 layer than in other layers. This is probably due to flooding desalination and green manure cultivation. Besides, Ap1 and A2 layers of soil profile in Site I showed brighter soil color and more root observation than those of Site II. This is probably due to green manure cultivation. By the large, for high cash upland crops and intensive agricultural use of silty reclaimed tidal land, site-specific soil ripening such as flooding desalination and green manure cultivation could be useful.
