  • This study examined how school-age children's peer acceptance and friendship experience were related to their psychosocial adjusment. Peer acceptance was examined in terms of sociometric status and social preference, and the friendship experience was examined in terms of the reciprocity of best friendship. The subjects were 275 children in the 4th or 5th grades. It was found that sociometric status and the reciprocity of best friendship were significant predictors of the level of loneliness that children experienced. Interaction between children's social preference score and the reciprocity of best friendship was also a significant predictor of the children's experience of loneliness. That is, the degree to which children are accepted by their peer group predicts the level of loneliness that children experience, but the strength of the prediction depends on whether the children have reciprocal best friends. Is for children's self-esteem in relation with sociometric status and the reciprocity of best friendship, only sociometric status was significant predictor of children's self-esteem. However, interaction between social preference and the reciprocity of best friendship was a significant predictor of children's self-esteem. This finding suggests that the degree to which children are accepted by their peer group predicts the level of children's self-esteem, and the strength of the prediction depends on whether the children have reciprocal best friends.

  • Friendship network characteristics, friendship quality, and popularity status were examined for 298 first and third graders(M age=7 yrs., 3 mo. and 9 yrs., 2 mo.). Children provided friendship nominations and responded to the Friendship Quality Scale(Rhee & Koh, in press). Results indicated that 3rd graders had larger friendship networks and more supportive friendship than 1st graders, and girls reported more reciprocal friends and more supportive friendships than boys. The best predictor for friendship satisfaction was a reliable alliance. The higher the reciprocity in friendship choice, the higher the perception of friendship functions and satisfaction. Unpopular children were less likely than popular children to have a reciprocal friend, although friendless children were found in both groups.

  • This study examined the interaction between children's peer experiences and familial support in relation to their psychosocial adjustment(self-esteem and lonelitness). Peer experiences were examined in terms of children's perceptions of peer acceptance and the reciprocity of best friendship. The subjects were 2754th or 5th graders residing in Seoul. It was found that the interaction between children's perceptions of peer acceptance and familial support, and that between the reciprocity of bort friendship and familial support were both significant predictors of children's loneliness whereas only the former was a significant predictor of children's self-esteem. The study results suggest that children's experiences from one type of interpersonal relationship should be examined in conjunction with their experiences in other types of relationships in order to better understand the psychosocial domains of child development.
