  • There is an increasing interest in the development of rechargeable batteries suitable for use in both hybrid electric vehicles and energy storage systems that require higher charge & discharge rates, bigger battery sizes and increased safety of the batteries. Spinel-type lithium titanium oxide ($Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$) as a potential anode for lithium ion batteries has many advantages. It is a zero-strain materials and it experiences no structural change during the charge/discharge precess. Thus, it has long cycle life due to its structural integrity. It also offers a stable operation voltage of approximately 1.55 V versus $Li^+/Li$, above the reduction potential of most organic electrolyte. In this study, Ru added $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ composites were synthesized by solid state process. The characteristics of active material were investigated with TGA-DTA, XRD, SEM and charge/discharge test. The capacity was reduced when Ru was added, however, the polarization decreased. The capacity rate of $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ with Ru (3%, 4%) addition was reduced during the charge/discharge precess with 10 C-rate as a high current density.

  • Generally, the high energy lithium ion batteries depend intimately on the high capacity of electrode materials. For anode materials, the capacity of commercial graphite is unlike to increase much further due to its lower theoretical capacity of 372 mAhg-1. To improve upon graphite-based negative electrode materials for Li-ion rechargeable batteries, alternative anode materials with higher capacity are needed. Therefore, some metal anodes with high theoretic capacity, such as Si, Sn, Ge, Al, and Sb have been studied extensively. This work focuses on ternary Si-M1-M2 composite system, where M1 is Ge that alloys with Li, which has good cyclability and high specific capacity and M2 is Mo that does not alloy with Li. The Si shows the highest gravimetric capacity (up to 4000mAhg-1 for Li21Si5). Although Si is the most promising of the next generation anodes, it undergoes a large volume change during lithium insertion and extraction. It results in pulverization of the Si and loss of electrical contact between the Si and the current collector during the lithiation and delithiation. Thus, its capacity fades rapidly during cycling. Si thin film is more resistant to fracture than bulk Si because the film is firmly attached to the substrate. Thus, Si film could achieve good cycleability as well as high capacity. To improve the cycle performance of Si, Suzuki et al. prepared two components active (Si)-active(Sn, like Ge) elements film by vacuum deposition, where Sn particles dispersed homogeneously in the Si matrix. This film showed excellent rate capability than pure Si thin film. In this work, second element, Ge shows also high capacity (about 2500mAhg-1 for Li21Ge5) and has good cyclability although it undergoes a large volume change likewise Si. But only Ge does not use the anode due to its costs. Therefore, the electrode should be consisted of moderately Ge contents. Third element, Mo is an element that does not alloys with Li such as Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, V, Zr. In our previous research work, we have fabricated Si-Mo (active-inactive elements) composite negative electrodes by using RF/DC magnetron sputtering method. The electrodes showed excellent cycle characteristics. The Mo-silicide (inert matrix) dispersed homogeneously in the Si matrix and prevents the active material from aggregating. However, the thicker film than $3\;{\mu}m$ with high Mo contents showed poor cycling performance, which was attributed to the internal stress related to thickness. In order to deal with the large volume expansion of Si anode, great efforts were paid on material design. One of the effective ways is to find suitably three-elements (Si-Ge-Mo) contents. In this study, the Si based composites of 45~65 Si at.% and 23~43 Ge at.%, and 12~32 Mo at.% are evaluated the electrochemical characteristics and cycle performances as an anode. Results from six different compositions of Si-Ge-Mo are presented compared to only the Si and Ge negative electrodes.

  • Nonaqueous organic electrolyte solution in commercially available lithium-ion batteries, due to its flammability, corrosiveness, high volatility, and thermal instability, is demanding to be substituted by safer solid electrolyte with higher cycle stability, which will be utilized effectively in large-scale power sources such as electric vehicles and energy storage system. Of various types of solid electrolytes, composite solid electrolytes with polymer matrix and active inorganic fillers are now most promising in achieving higher ionic conductivity and excellent interface contact. In this review, some kinds and brief history of solid electrolyte are at first introduced and consequent explanations of polymer solid electrolytes and inorganic solid electrolytes (including active and inactive fillers) are comprehensively carried out. Composite solid electrolytes including these polymer and inorganic materials are also described with their electrochemical properties in terms of filler shapes, such as particle (0D), fiber (1D), plane (2D), and solid body (3D). In particular, in all-solid-state lithium batteries using lithium metal anode, the interface characteristics are discussed in terms of cathode-electrolyte interface, anode-electrolyte interface, and interparticle interface. Finally, current requisites and future perspectives for the composite solid electrolytes are suggested by help of some decent reviews recently reported.

  • $TiO_2$ nanotubes are prepared from rutile prticles via an alkaline hydrothermal synthesis and the consequent heat treatment at $300{\sim}500^{\circ}C$. The physical and electrochemical properties of the $TiO_2$ nanotubes are characterized for use as a anode material of rechargeable lithium battery. In particular, the microscale dusts as an impurity component occurred in the purification step after the hydrothermal reaction are completely removed to yield $TiO_2$ nanotube with a higher specific surface area and more obvious crystalline phases. As the annealing temperature increases, the specific surface area is slightly decreased due to some aggregation between the isotropically dispersed nanotubes. Highest initial discharge capacity of 250 mAh $g^{-1}$ is achieved for the $TiO_2$ nanotube annealed at $300^{\circ}C$, whereas the $400^{\circ}C$ $TiO_2$ nanotube shows the superior cycle performance and high-rate capability.

  • Carbon-coated $Li_2MnSiO_4$ powders as the active materials for the cathode were synthesized by planetary ball milling and solid-state reaction, and their phase formation behavior and charge-discharge properties were investigated. Calcination temperature and atmosphere were controlled in order to obtain the ${\beta}-Li_2MnSiO_4$ phase, which was active electrochemically, and the carbon-coated $Li_2MnSiO_4$ active material powders with near single phase ${\beta}-Li_2MnSiO_4$ could be fabricated. The particles of the synthesized powders were secondary particles composed of primary ones of about 100 nm size. The carbon incorporation was essential to enable the Li ions to be inserted and extracted from $Li_2MnSiO_4$ active materials, and the initial capacity of 192 mAh/g could be obtained in the $Li_2MnSiO_4$ active materials with 4.8 wt% of carbon.

  • Amorphous $V_2O_5$ cathode thin films were prepared by DC-magnetron sputtering at room temperature and the thin film rechargeable lithium batteries were fabricated with the configuration of $V_2O_5/LIPON/Li$ using sequential ex-situ thin film deposition techniques. The electrochemical characteristics of $V_2O_5$ cathode materials Prepared at 80/20 of $Ar/O_2$ ratio showed high capacity and cycling behaviors by half cell test. LIPON solid electrolytes films were prepared by RF-magnetron sputtering using the self-made $Li_3PO_4$ target in pure $N_2$ atmosphere, and it was very stable for lithium contact in the range of 1.2-4.0 V vs. Li. Metallic lithium were deposited on LIPON electrolyte by thermal evaporation methode in dry room. Vanadium oxide based full cell system showed the initial discharge capacity of $150{\mu}A/cm^2{\mu}m$ in the range of $1.2\~3.5V$.

  • The polyacenic semiconductor material (PAS) electrode prepared by the pyrolytic treatment of phenol-formaldehyde resin is one of useful electrodes. As an anode material of lithium rechargeable batteries, amorphous carbon materials have been studied extensively because of their high electrochemcal performance and cyclicability. Carbon materials do not lead to the formation of lithium dendrite which is one of the most serious problems in applying Li-based materials to an electrode of batteries. The polyacene materials prepared from phenol resin at relatively low temperatures $(550\~750^{\circ}C)$ show a highly Li\doped state up to $C_2Li$ state without liberation of Li cluster. We prepared each polyacene materials at various temperature and investigated electro- chemical properties. We tried to change the mole ratio of [H]/[C] which is $0.24\~0.4$ range. Considering of electrochemical properties of PAS material, the PAS material is one of the most suitable materials for electrodes of a polymer battery.

  • All-solid state lithium rechargeable thin film batteries were fabricated with the configuration of$Cu_{0.5}V_2O_5/Lipon/Li$ using sequential thin film techniques. Copper vanadium oxide thin films and Lipon thin films were prepared by DC reactive dual source magnetron sputtering and RF magnetron sputtering, respectively. According to XRD analysis, we found out that copper vanadium oxide thin films were amorphous. The electrochemical behaviour of them was examined in half cell system using EC : DMC(1:1 in IM $LiPF_5$) liquid electrolyte. The ionic conductivity of Lipon thin film was $1.02\times10^{-6}S/cm$ at $25^{\circ}C$ and $Cu_{0.5}V_2O_5/Lipon/Li$ cell showed that the discharge capacity was about $50{\mu}Ah/cm^2{\mu}m$ beyond 500cyc1es.

  • Lithium metal is the most promising anode for next-generation lithium-ion batteries due to its lowest reduction potential (-3.04 V vs. SHE) and high specific capacity (3860 mAh/g). However, the dendritic formation under high charging current density remains one of main technical barriers to be used for commercial rechargeable batteries. To address these issues, tremendous research to suppress lithium dendrite formation have been conducted through new electrolyte formulation, robust protection layer, shape-controlled lithium metal, separator modification, etc. However, Li/Li symmetric cell test is always a starting or essential step to demonstrate better lithium dendrite formation behavior with lower overpotential and longer cycle life without careful analysis. Thus, this review summarizes overpotential behaviors of Li/Li symmetric cells along with theoretical explanations like initial peaking or later arcing. Also, we categorize various overpotential data depending on research approaches and discuss them based on peaking and arcing behaviors. Thus, this review will be very helpful for researchers in lithium metal to analyze their overpotential behaviors.

  • $LiCoO_2$, a cathode material for lithium rechargeable batteries, was prepared in a nanoscale through a simple sonochemistry. First, $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles were prepared by reacting NaOH and $CoCl_2$ or $CoSO_4$ with a sonochemical method, operated at 20 kHz and 220 W for 20 min, very powerful multibubble sonoluminescence conditions for chemical reactions. Second, LiOH was coated onto the $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles by the same method as above. Finally, $LiCoO_2$ nanoparticles of about 10~30 nm size in diameter were obtained by the thermal treatment of the resulting LiOH-coated $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles at $500^{\circ}C$ for 3 hr. This synthetic process is relatively quite mild and simple compared to the known method for the synthesis of $LiCoO_2$ nanoparticles. The materials synthesized were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma spectrometer, and high resolution-transmission electron microscopy analyses.
