  • To investigate groundwater variation characteristics in the Hancheon watershed, Jeju Island, an integrated hydrologic component analysis was carried out. For this purpose, SWAT-MODFLOW which is an integrated surface-groundwater model was applied to the watershed for continuous watershed hydrologic analysis as well as groundwater modeling. First, ephemeral stream characteristics of Hancheon watershed can be clearly simulated which is unlikely to be shown by a general watershed hydrologic model. Second, the temporally varied groundwater recharge can be properly obtained from SWAT and then spatially distributed groundwater recharge can be made by MODFLOW. Finally, the groundwater level variation was simulated with distributed groundwater pumping data. Since accurate recharge as well as abstraction can be reflected into the groundwater modeling, more realistic hydrologic component analysis and groundwater modeling could be possible.

  • In this study, daily based groundwater recharge was estimated under unsteady state by using groundwater table fluctuation model developed by Kim et al. (2013). This technique analyzes groundwater variation characteristics by using reaction factor related with groundwater flow and specific yield related with recharge. For the application of this model, measured groundwater level at JD Yongdam 1 and JW Konghang for 5 years were used. This model can estimate daily based groundwater recharge and the computed groundwater levels showed good agreement with measured groundwater levels. At JD Yongdam 1 and JW Konghang, the estimated recharges (rates) were 520.4~904.0mm (32.7~61.8%) and 447.4~633.4mm (24.0~45.1%), respectively. The developed model can be suggested as an efficient and precise method to estimate daily based groundwater recharge by using groundwater level data.

  • The green house on the waterfront is air-conditioned by a water-source heat pump system with riverbank filtration water. In order to supply riverbank filtration water in alluvium aquifer, the riverbank filtration facility for water intake and recharge, two pumping wells and one recharge well, has been constructed. The research site in Jinju, Korea was chosen as a good site for riverbank filtration water supply by the surface geological survey, electrical resistivity soundings, and borehole surveys. In the results of two boreholes drilling at the site, it was revealed that the groundwater table is about 3 m under the ground, and that the sandy gravel aquifer layer in the thickness of 6.5 m and 3.5 m occurs at 5 m and 7 m in depth below the ground level respectively. To prevent the recharge water from affecting the pumped water which might be used as heat source or sink, the distance between pumping and recharge wells is designed at least 70 m with a quarter of recharged flow rate. It is predicted that the transfer term, the recharge water affects the pumping well, is over 6 months of heating season. Hydrogeological simulation and underground water temperature measurement have been carried out for the pumping and recharge well positions in order to confirm the capability of sustainable green house heating and cooling.

  • It is getting difficult to manage water resources in South Korea because more than half of annual precipitation is concentrated in the summer season and its intensity is getting severe due to global warming and climate change. Artificial recharge schemes can be a useful method to manage water resources in Korea adapting to climate change. Patent analysis enables us to prevent overlapping investment and to find out unoccupied technology. In this study, international patent trends and barriers of artificial recharge technology are analysed for patents of Korea, Japan, the United States and Europe. The four artificial recharge methods such as well recharge, surface infiltration, bank filtration and underground structures are classified as main class and the nine sub-technologies such as water intake, water treatment, injection wells, monitoring of groundwater flow, groundwater pumping, surface infiltration/soil aquifer treatment, radial collection well, iron/manganese treatment, and underground subsurface dam are classified as intermediate class. Water intake techniques are subdivided into five classifications. Total 1,281 of patents, searched by WIPS DB tool and selected after removing noisy patents, are analyzed quantitatively to evaluate application trends by year, applicant, country for each classified technologies and analyzed qualitatively to find out occupied and unoccupied technologies. It is expected that upcoming research and development project could be performed efficiently in that an avoidance plan for the similar patents and differentiation plan for the advancing patents are set up based on the quantitative and qualitative analysis results from this research.

  • Since the majority of streamflow during dry periods is provided by groundwater storage, the streamflow depends on a basin moisture state recharged from rainfall during wet periods. This hydrologic characteristics dives good condition to predict long-term streamflow if the basin state like groundwater recharge is known in advance. The objective of this study is to examine groundwater recharge effect to monthly streamflow, and to attempt monthly streamflow prediction using estimated groundwater recharge. The ground water recharge is used as an independent variable with streamflow and precipitation to construct multiple regression models for the prediction. Correlation analysis was performed to assess the effect of groundwater carry-over to streamflow and to establish the associations among independent variables. The predicted streamflow shows that the multiple regression model involved groundwater recharge gives improved results comparing to the model only using streamflow and precipitation as independent variables. In addition, this paper shows that the prediction model with the effect of groundwater carry-over taken into account can be developed using only precipitation.

  • By far, groundwater management has been conducted by 'safe yield' policy based on the estimation of annual average of groundwater recharge throughout the world. However, as groundwater recharge show spatiotemporal variation, dynamic analysis must be carried out to evaluate the sustainable groundwater resources. In this study, an integrated surface-groundwater model, SWAT-MODFLOW was used to compute the spatial distribution of groundwater recharge in Gyungju region. Frequency analysis is adopted to evaluate the existing values of potential amount of groundwater development which is made by the 10 year drought frequency rainfall multiplied by recharge coefficient. The conservative methods for estimating recharge rates of 10 year drought frequency in subbains are newly suggested and compared with the existing values of potential amount of groundwater development. This process will promote the limitations for existing precesses used for computing potential amount of groundwater development.

  • Local drought in South Korea has recently increased interest in the efficient use of groundwater and then induces a growing need to introduce artificial recharge of groundwater that stores water in sedimentary layer. In order to evaluate the potential artificial recharge sites in the alluvial basins in Chungcheongnamdo province, an AHP (Analytical hierarchy process) model consisting of three primary and seven secondary factors was developed in this study. In the AHP model, adding candidate sites changes final evaluation score through a mathematical calculation process. By contrast ANN (Artificial neural network) model always provides an unchanged score for each candidate area. Therefore, the score can be used as a selection criterion for artificial recharge sites. It is concluded that the possibility of artificial recharge is relatively low if the score of the ANN model is less than about 1.5. Further studies and field surveys on the other regions in Korea will lead to draw out a more applicable ANN model.
