  • An attempt has been made on a constructive approach to evaluate the performance of snail shell ash (SSA) for its corrosion performance under marine environments. Corrosion performance of steel rebar in chloride contaminated SSA with (0% to 50%) replacement levels of cement extract medium was examined through electrochemical and weight loss techniques. Initially, snail shell powder (SSP) is made by pulverizing and subsequently SSA is by thermal decomposition methods. A critical level of 20 % SSA improved both corrosion resistance properties of cement extracts. SSA is a suitable replacement material for natural limestone in cement productions.

  • Corrosion of the steel rebar in coastal environment caused huge economical loss of the globe. Therefore, coating on the steel rebar being used to mitigate the corrosion. In the present study, we have applied epoxy coating on arc thermal sprayed Al coating (a dual metal/polymeric coating) vis-à-vis compared with as coated one (Al coating). The corrosion studies were performed in simulated concrete pore solution with 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution. The morphology of the dual epoxy/Al coating is smooth while Al coating shows rankle and defects. Due to defects, Al coating is susceptible to corrosion while dual epoxy/Al coating has performed excellent compared to as coated one at extended period of immersion.

  • The corrosion of steel reinforcing bar has been the major cause of the reinforced concrete deterioration. GFRP(Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer) reinforcing bar has emerged as one of the most promising and affordable solutions to the corrosion problems of steel reinforcement in structural concrete. However, GFRP rebar is prone to deteriorate due to other degradation mechanisms than those for steel. The high alkalinity of concrete, for instance, is a possible degradation source. This paper presents the long-term deterioration of the GFRP rebar under alkali environmental condition.

  • In this study, to clarify the differences rebar corrosion beginning, through the actual corrosion accelerated test in corrosion time and laboratory test chamber of the structure of the marine environment results in both environments, it is an object of correlation coefficient derived. The accelerated corrosion test was carried out by two case, I.e., one is $20^{\circ}C$ of low temperaure codition(case 1), and the other is $65^{\circ}C$ of high temperaute codition(case 2). Whether corroions occurs, it was measures using half-cell potential method. The results indicated that case 2 is to acclerate the corrosion of rebar about 1.7~1.8 times as compared with case 1, thenthe corrosion of rebar embadded in concrete occurred according to the order of OPC60, FA, BS, OPC35. Correlation coefficient between acclerated corrosion test and long-term exposure test, case 1 is 2.45 to 2.94, and case 2 is 4.37~4.99.

  • Recent interest in the increased structural performance and durability evaluation of this concrete structure in a salt damage environment is increasing. The most secure and reliable method of accelerated corrosion test is a method to carry out the rebar corrosion monitoring can be exposed directly to the marine test site exposure. However, long-term exposure testinghas the disadvantage that a long period is necessary. So, a lot of research on RC of salt damage environment have beenpromoted as alternatives to replace this. However, accelerated corrosion test, in the short term only is appropriate and is but an accelerated test method to evaluate the critical chlorine concentration, there is a difficult problem that you still get the answer. It is one of the correlation problems accelerated test correspond to a certain period of exposure environment. Therefore, in this study, to clarify the differences rebar corrosion beginning, through the actual corrosion accelerated test in corrosion time and laboratory test chamber of the structure of the marine environment results in both environments, it is an object of correlation coefficient derived.

  • Over the last decade fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement consisting of glass, carbon, or aramid fibers embedded in a resin such as vinyl ester, epoxy, or polyester has emerged as one of the most promising and affordable solutions to the corrosion problems of steel reinforcement in structural concrete. But reinforcing rebar for concrete made of FRP rebar has linear elastic behavior up to tensile failure. For safety a certain plastic strain and an elongation greater than 3% at maximum load is usually required for steel reinforcement in concrete structures. The same should be required for FRP rebar. Thus, the main object of this study was to develop new type of hybrid FRP rebar Also, this study was evaluated to the mechanical properties of Hybrid FRP rebar. The Manufacture of the hybrid FRP rebar was achieved by pultrusion, and braiding and filament winding techniques. Tensile and interlaminar shear test results of Hybrid FRP rebar can provide its excellent tensile strength-strain behavior and interlaminar stress-strain behavior.

  • In order to measure corrosion level of reinforcement rebar which is inside reinforced concrete structure, infrared thermographic technique was employed. Experimental test parameters were ambient temperatures, various levels of corrosion states. After analysis of temperature distributions of concrete surface, the amount of heat flux from the concrete surface is directly proportional to the corrosion level which is inside of concrete.

  • Corrosion of the rebar embedded in concrete has a fundamental role in the determination of life and durability of the concrete structures. Researches have demonstrated that artificial neural networks (ANNs) can effectively predict issues such as expected damage in concrete structures in marine environment caused by chloride penetration, the potential of steel embedded in concrete under the influence of chloride, the corrosion of the steel embedded in concrete and corrosion current density in steel reinforced concrete. In this study, data from different kind of concrete under the influence of chloride ion, are analyzed using the neural network and it is concluded that this method is able to predict the bond strength between the concrete and the steel reinforcement in mentioned condition with high reliability.

  • For old piers constructed when seismic design code had not been developed, lap splices usually exist in plastic hinge region. Corrosion of rebars causes decreasement in cross-sectional area of rebar and deterioration of lap-splice behaviour, thereby reducing the seismic performance of the old piers. In this research, according to these characteristics of old piers, test specimens are designed and manufactured considering rebar corrosion, lap splice, seismic design details, and seismic reinforcement. These effects are investigated through experiments. As a result of these experiment, rebar corrosion as well as lap splice reduces displacement ductility. When seismic design details or steel-plate reinforcement are applied, sufficient displacement ductility is expressed. For non-seismically designed specimens, loosening of the lap splice of transverse rebars caused buckling of longitudinal rebars and crushing of core concrete in plastic hinge region . For seismically designed specimen, area-reducing and untying of transverse rebars due to corrosion of rebars caused buckling of longitudinal rebars and crushing of core concrete.

  • Conventional studies have focused on the reduction in the water-cement ratio, the use of various admixtures, etc., to ensure the durability of reinforced concrete structures against such deterioration factors as carbonation and chloride attack. However, improvement in the concrete quality alone is not considered sufficient or realistic for meeting the recent demand for a service life of over 100 years. This study intends to improve the durability of reinforced concrete structures by improvement in the reinforcing steel, which has remained untouched due to cost problems, through subtle adjustment of the steel components to keep the cost low. As a fundamental study on the performance of Cr-bearing rebars in steel reinforced concrete structures exposed to corrosive environments, The test specimens were made by installing 8 types of rebars in concretes with a chloride ion content of 0.3, 0.6, 1.2, 2.4 and $24kg/m^3$. Corrosion accelerated curing were then conducted with them. The corrosion resistance of Cr-bearing rebars was examined by measuring crack widths, half-cell potential, corrosion area and weight loss after 155 cycles of corrosion-accelerating curing. The results of the study showed that the corrosion resistance increased as the Cr content increased regardless of the content of chloride ions, and that the Cr-bearing rebars with a Cr content of 5% and 9% showed high corrosion resistance in concretes with a chloride ion content of 1.2 and $2.4kg/m^3$, respectively.
