The Use of Artificial Neural Networks in the Monitoring of Spot Weld Quality (인공신경회로망을 이용한 저항 점용접의 품질감시)

  • The estimation of nugget sizes was attempted by utilizing the artificial neural networks method. Artificial neural networks is a highly simplified model of the biological nervous system. Artificial neural networks is composed of a large number of elemental processors connected like biological neurons. Although the elemental processors have only simple computation functions, because they are connected massively, they can describe any complex functional relationship between an input-output pair in an autonomous manner. The electrode head movement signal, which is a good indicator of corresponding nugget size was determined by measuring the each test specimen. The sampled electrode movement data and the corresponding nugget sizes were fed into the artificial neural networks as input-output pairs to train the networks. In the training phase for the networks, the artificial neural networks constructs a fuctional relationship between the input-output pairs autonomusly by adjusting the set of weights. In the production(estimation) phase when new inputs are sampled and presented, the artificial neural networks produces appropriate outputs(the estimates of the nugget size) based upon the transfer characteristics learned during the training mode. Experimental verification of the proposed estimation method using artificial neural networks was done by actual destructive testing of welds. The predicted result by the artifficial neural networks were found to be in a good agreement with the actual nugget size. The results are quite promising in that the real-time estimation of the invisible nugget size can be achieved by analyzing the process variable without any conventional destructive testing of welds.

Verification Study on Real-time Automated Discharge Measurement (실시간 자동측정유량의 검증 연구)

  • 본 연구에서는 도플러 방식 초음파유속계(ADVM, Acoustic Doppler Velocity Meter) 및 이동시간차방식 초음파유속계(UVM, Ultrasonic Velocity Meter)의 유량자료 검증을 위해 두 가지 방식이 적용된 한강대교와 여주대교의 2007년 운영성과를 검토하고 측정된 결과분석을 통해 자동유량측정시설의 유량측정자료를 검증하였다. 측정된 유량의 검증을 위해 평 저수시 유속계 측정 및 이동 ADCP법에 의한 연속 유량측정결과와 비교하였으며, 또한 봉부자를 이용한 측정결과와의 비교를 통해 홍수시 측정결과를 검토하였다. 또한 댐방류량, 하수처리장 방류량, 각종 취수량을 이용한 물수지 분석을 통해 자동유량측정에 의해 산정된 유출량과 비교하였다. ADVM 방식이 적용된 한강대교의 조위영향에 따른 수위변화를 고려하여 한 주기에 대한 측정을 수행하여 이를 비교한 결과, 흐름이 정체되는 일부구간의 측정결과를 제외하면 대부분 상대오차가 10% 내외가 발생하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 월별 물수지 분석을 수행한 결과, 설치초기 시스템 안정화작업으로 인해 결측이 많이 발생한 $3{\sim}4$월을 제외하면 10%내외의 오차가 발생하였으며, 홍수기인 $6{\sim}7$월 사이에는 $1.9{\sim}5.5%$의 상대오차를 보여 자동유량측정시설의 측정결과가 매우 양호한 것으로 나타났다. 여주대교의 UVM 방식의 경우 측정장비의 안정화가 이루어진 5월부터 9월까지의 측정결과는 수위유량관계곡선으로 산정된 유량과 비교하였을 때 10%내외의 상대오차를 보인 것으로 나타났다. 아울러 월별 물수지 분석결과에서도 결측이 많이 발생한 5월의 23.7%의 오차를 제외하면, $5{\sim}10%$내의 오차를 보인 것으로 나타났으며 홍수기인 $6{\sim}8$월의 경우 5%이내의 오차가 발생한 것으로 나타났다.

Flexible, Extensible, and Efficient VANET Authentication

  • Although much research has been conducted in the area of authentication in wireless networks, vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) pose unique challenges, such as real-time constraints, processing limitations, memory constraints, frequently changing senders, requirements for interoperability with existing standards, extensibility and flexibility for future requirements, etc. No currently proposed technique addresses all of the requirements for message and entity authentication in VANETs. After analyzing the requirements for viable VANET message authentication, we propose a modified version of TESLA, TESLA++, which provides the same computationally efficient broadcast authentication as TESLA with reduced memory requirements. To address the range of needs within VANETs we propose a new hybrid authentication mechanism, VANET authentication using signatures and TESLA++ (VAST), that combines the advantages of ECDSA signatures and TESLA++. Elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA) signatures provide fast authentication and non-repudiation, but are computationally expensive. TESLA++ prevents memory and computation-based denial of service attacks. We analyze the security of our mechanism and simulate VAST in realistic highway conditions under varying network and vehicular traffic scenarios. Simulation results show that VAST outperforms either signatures or TESLA on its own. Even under heavy loads VAST is able to authenticate 100% of the received messages within 107ms. VANETs use certificates to achieve entity authentication (i.e., validate senders). To reduce certificate bandwidth usage, we use Hu et al.'s strategy of broadcasting certificates at fixed intervals, independent of the arrival of new entities. We propose a new certificate verification strategy that prevents denial of service attacks while requiring zero additional sender overhead. Our analysis shows that these solutions introduce a small delay, but still allow drivers in a worst case scenario over 3 seconds to respond to a dangerous situation.

A Study of Automatic Detection of Music Signal from Broadcasting Audio Signal (방송 오디오 신호로부터 음악 신호 검출에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we proposed an automatic music/non-music signal discrimination system from broadcasting audio signal as a preliminary study of building a sound source monitoring system in real broadcasting environment. By reflecting human speech articulation characteristics, we used three simple time-domain features such as energy standard deviation, log energy standard deviation and log energy mean. Based on the experimental threshold values of each feature, we developed a rule-based algorithm to classify music portion of the input audio signal. For the verification of the proposed algorithm, actual FM broadcasting signal was recorded for 24 hours and used as source input audio signal. From the experimental results, the proposed system can effectively recognize music section with the accuracy of 96% and non-music section with that of 87%, where the performance is good enough to be used as a pre-process module for the a sound source monitoring system.

Damage Detection Method of Wind Turbine Blade Using Acoustic Emission Signal Mapping (음향방출신호 맵핑을 이용한 풍력 블레이드 손상 검출 기법)

  • Acoustic emission(AE) has emerged as a powerful nondestructive tool to detect any further growth or expansion of preexisting defects or to characterize failure mechanisms. Recently, this kind of technique, that is an in-situ monitoring of inside damages of materials or structures, becomes increasingly popular for monitoring the integrity of large structures like a huge wind turbine blade. Therefore, it is required to find a symptom of damage propagation before catastrophic failure through a continuous monitoring. In this study, a new damage location method has been proposed by using signal mapping algorithm, and an experimental verification is conducted by using small wind turbine blade specimen; a part of 750 kW real blade. The results show that this new signal mapping method has high advantages such as a flexibility for sensor location, improved accuracy, high detectability. The newly proposed method was compared with traditional AE source location method based on arrival time difference.

A Software Framework for Verifying Sensor Network Operations and Sensing Algorithms (센서네트워크 동작 및 센싱 알고리즘 검증을 위한 소프트웨어 프레임워크)

  • Most of sensor networks are difficult to be debugged, verified, and upgraded once they are deployed in the fields, for they are usually deployed in real world and large scale. Therefore, before deploying the sensor networks, we should test and verify them sufficiently in realistic testbeds. However, since we need to control physical environments which interact with sensor networks, it takes much of time and cost to test and verify sensor networks at the level of resource-constrained sensor nodes in such environments. This paper proposes an efficient software framework for evaluating and verifying sensor networks in the view points of network and application operations (i.e., accuracy of sensing algorithms). Applying the proposed software framework to the development of a simulator for a smart parking application based on wireless sensor network, this paper verifies the feasibility of the proposed framework.

Experimental result of Real-time Sonar-based SLAM for underwater robot (소나 기반 수중 로봇의 실시간 위치 추정 및 지도 작성에 대한 실험적 검증)

  • This paper presents experimental results of realtime sonar-based SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) using probability-based landmark-recognition. The sonar-based SLAM is used for navigation of underwater robot. Inertial sensor as IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) and DVL (Doppler Velocity Log) and external information from sonar image processing are fused by Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) technique to get the navigation information. The vehicle location is estimated by inertial sensor data, and it is corrected by sonar data which provides relative position between the vehicle and the landmark on the bottom of the basin. For the verification of the proposed method, the experiments were performed in a basin environment using an underwater robot, yShark.

Study on Wireless Acquisition of Vibration Signals (진동신호 무선 수집에 대한 연구)

  • A Wi-Fi signal network (WSN) system is introduced in this paper. This system consists of several data-transmitting sensor modules and a data-receiving server. Each sensor module and the server contain a unique intranet IP address. A piezoelectric accelerometer with a bandwidth of 12 kHz, a 24-bit analog-digital converter with a sampling rate of 15.625 kS/s, a 32-bit microprocessor unit, and a 1-Mbps Wi-Fi module are used in the data-transmitting sensor module. A 300-Mbps router and a PC are used in the server. The system is verified using an accelerometer calibrator. The voltage output from the sensor is converted into 24-bit digital data and transmitted via the Wi-Fi module. These data are received by a Wi-Fi router connected to a PC. The input frequencies of the accelerometer calibrator (320 Hz, 640 Hz, and 1280 Hz) are used in the data transfer verification. The received data are compared to the data retrieved directly from the analog-to-digital converter used in the sensor module. The comparison shows that the developed system represents the original data considerably well. Theoretically, the system can acquire vibration signals from 600 sensor modules at an accelerometer bandwidth of 15.625 kHz. However, delay exists owing to software processes, multiplexing between sensor modules, and the use of non-real time operating system. Hence, it is recommended that this system may be used to acquire vibration signals with up to 10 kHz, which is approximately 70% of the theoretical maximum speed of the system. Study on Modeling and Experiment of Optical Three Axis Tool-Origin Sensor for Applications of Micro Machine-Tools (초소형 공작기계 적용을 고려한 광학식 3 축 공구원점 센서 모델링 및 실험에 관한 연구)

  • One of the traditional optical methods to monitor a tool is a CCD sensor-based vision system which captures an aspect of the tool in real time. In the case using the CCD sensor, specific lens-modules are necessary to monitor the tool with higher resolution than its pixel size, and a microprocessor is required to attain desired data from captured images. Thus theses additional devices make the entire measurement system complex. Another method is to use a pair of an optical source and a detector per measuring axis. Since the method is based on the intensity modulation, the structure of the measurement system is simper than the CCD sensor-based vision system. However, in the case measuring the three dimensional position of the tool, it is difficult to apply to micro machine-tools because there may not be space to integrate three pairs of an optical source and a detector. In this paper, in order to develop a tool-origin measurement system which is employed in micro machine-tools, the improved method to measure a tool origin in x, y and z axes is introduced. The method is based on the intensity modulation and employs one pair of an optical source radiating divergent beams and a quadrant photodiode to detect a three dimensional position of the tool. This paper presents the measurement models of the proposed tool-origin sensor. The models were verified experimentally The verification results show that the proposed method is possible and the induced models are available for design.

Verification of Nonlinear Numerical Analysis for Seismic Response of Single Degree of Freedom Structure with Shallow Foundation (비선형 수치해석을 통한 단자유도 얕은기초 구조물의 지진 응답특성 검증)

  • Seismic response of single degree of freedom system supported by shallow foundation was analyzed by using nonlinear explicit finite difference element code. Numerical analysis results were verified with dynamic centrifuge test results of the same soil profile and structural dimensions with the numerical analysis model at a centrifugal acceleration of 20 g. Differences between the analysis and the test results induced by the boundary conditions of control points can be reduced by adding additional local damping to the natural born cyclic hysteretic damping of the soil strata. The analysis results show good agreement with the test results in terms of both time histories and response spectra. Thus, it can be concluded that the nonlinear explicit finite difference element code will be a useful technique for estimating seismic residual displacement, earthpressure etc. which are difficult to measure during laboratory tests and real earthquake.
