Gauss and Laplace methods for initial orbit determination (IOD) are classical orbit determination tools and have been used very efficiently in optical satellite surveillance system. Several studies related to these two methods have been released until now. In this study, we found that the trends of IOD accuracy for different time interval between three pairs of measurement datas show unexpected results. Therefore, we checked the possible cause of these differences. In order to check various orbit types, we used most of satellite data which is able to obtain. To check the characteristics of methodology-only, we used simulated observation data. And we used real observation data for specific satellites to check the characteristics appeared when we applyed these methods to optical satellite surveillance system. As a result, we found that trends of IOD accuracy for time interval could be different because of satellite position observed.

Galileo is the European Global Navigation Satellite System, under civilian control, and consists on a constellation of medium Earth orbit satellites and its associated ground infrastructure. Galileo will provide to their users highly accurate global positioning services and their associated integrity information. The elements in charge of the computation of Galileo navigation and integrity information are the OSPF (Orbit Synchronization Processing Facility) and IPF (Integrity Processing Facility), within the Galileo Ground Mission Segment (GMS). Navigation algorithms play a key role in the provision of the Galileo Mission, since they are responsible for computing the essential information the users need to calculate their position: the satellite ephemeris and clock offsets. Such information is generated in the Galileo Ground Mission Segment and broadcast by the satellites within the navigation signal, together with the expected a-priori accuracy (SISA: Signal-In-Space Accuracy), which is the parameter that in fault-free conditions makes the overbounding the predicted ephemeris and clock model errors for the Worst User Location. In parallel, the integrity algorithms of the GMS are responsible of providing a real-time monitoring of the satellite status with timely alarm messages in case of failures. The accuracy of the integrity monitoring system is characterized by the SISMA (Signal In Space Monitoring Accuracy), which is also broadcast to the users through the integrity message.
An optical tracking system has advantages for observing geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellites relatively over other types of observation system. Regular surveying for unidentified space objects with the optical tracking system can be an early warning tool for the safety of five Korean active GEO satellites. Two strategies of positioning on the observed image of Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite 1 are tested and compared. Photometric method has a half root mean square error against streak method. Also eccentricity method for initial orbit determination (IOD) is tested with simulation data and real observation data. Under 10 minutes observation time interval, eccentricity method shows relatively better IOD results than the other time interval. For follow-up observation of unidentified space objects, at least two consecutive observations are needed in 5 minutes to determine orbit for geosynchronous orbit space objects.
We made a study on real-time determination method for relative position using the laser-measured distance data between satellites. We numerically performed the determination of relative position in accordance with extended Kalman filter algorithm using the vectors obtained through nonlinear equation of relative motion, laser simulator for distance measurement, and attitude determination of chief satellite. Because the spherical parameters of relative distance and direction are used, there occur some changes in precision depending on changes in relative distance when determining the relative position. As a result of simulation, it was possible to determine the relative position with several millimeter-level errors at a distance of 10 km, and sub-millimeter level errors at a distance of 1 km. In addition, we performed the determination of relative position assuming the case that global positioning system data was not received for long hours to see the impact of determination of chief satellite orbit on the determination of relative position. The determination of precise relative position at a long distance carried out in this study can be used for scientific mission using the satellite formation flying.
In case that we independently obtain orbital informations about the low earth satellites of foreign countries using radar systems, we develop the orbit determination algorithm for this purpose using a SGP4 model with an analytical orbit model and the extended Kalman filter with a real-time processing method. When the state vector is Keplerian orbital elements, singularity problems happen to compute partial derivative with respect to inclination and eccentricity orbit elements. To cope with this problem, we set state vector osculating to mean equinox and true equator cartesian elements with coordinate transformation. The state transition matrix and the covariance matrix are numerically computed using a SGP4 model. Observational measurements are the type of azimuth, elevation and range, filter process to each measurement in a lump. After analyzing performance of the developed orbit determination algorithm using TOPEX/POSEIDON POE(precision 0.bit Ephemeris), its position error has about 1 km. To be similar to performance of NORAD system that has up to 3km position accuracy during 7 days need to radar system performance that have accuracy within 0.1 degree for azimuth and elevation and 50m for range.
Low Earth orbit satellites with satellite navigation receiver use onboard navigation filters for filtering measurement signals and for orbit prediction under signal loss. Precision satellite dynamic models, core of the navigation filter, are studied and a computation program is developed. Gravity acceleration, precision coordinate transform, third-body gravity, atmospheric drag, and solar radiation pressure models are combined into an orbit prediction algorithm, and a proven precision orbit determination software is used to validate the program. Orbit prediction accuracy is analyzed with simulated and flight orbit data. The program meets an accuracy level for onboard real-time navigation filter.
The accuracy of GPS applications is heavily dependent on the satellite ephemeris and earth orientation parameter. Specially applications like as the real time monitoring of troposphere and ionosphere require real time or predicted ephemeris arid earth orientation parameter with very high quality. IGS is producing IGS ultra rapid product called IGU for real time applications which includes the information of ephemeris and earth orientation. IGU is being made available twice everyday at 3:00 and 15:00 UTC arid covers 48 hours. The first 24 hours of it are based on actual GPS observations and the second 24 hours extrapolated. We will construct the processing strategy for yielding ultra rapid product and demonstrate the propriety through producing it using 48 hours data of 32 stations.
The differential correction process determining osculating orbital elements as correct as possible at a given instant of time from tracking data of artificial satellite was accomplished. Preliminary orbital elements were used as an initial value of the differential correction procedure and iterated until the residual of real observation (O) and computed observation(C) was minimized. Tracking satellite was NOAA-9 or TIROS-N series. Two types of tracking data were prediction data precomputed from mean orbital elements of TBUS and real data obtained from tracking 1.70 GHz HRPT signal of NOAA-9 using 5 meter auto-track antenna in Radio Research Laboratory. Accrding to thacking data either Gause method or Herrick-Gibbs method was applied to preliminary orbit determination. In the differential correction stage we used both of the Escobal(1975)'s analytical method and numerical method using f, g series for the comparision. The results between analytical and numerical ones are nearly consistent. And the differentially corrected orbit converged to the same value in spite of the differences between preliminary orbits of each time span.

This technical paper deals with development of on-board orbit generation algorithm for GEO Satellite. This paper presents the research analysis results performed in order to improve the accuracy of the existing algorithm used for generating real-time orbit information for GEO satellite. The error impact on orbit accuracy due to the orbit error sources were analyzed with the algorithm suggested by this research. As a result of the analyses, it is found that the initial orbit should be determined with an accuracy of less than 50 m and the reference position angle error for the ground station and the satellite should be maintained within ${\pm}0.0025deg$ in order to meet the orbit accuracy specification. The development of on-board flight software based on the new algorithm was accomplished and the performance verification is ongoing by using a software based performance verification tool.
