  • Since the recent launch of Microsoft Xbox Kinect, research on 3D human pose estimation has attracted a lot of attention in the computer vision community. Kinect shows impressive estimation accuracy and real-time performance on massive graphics processing unit hardware. In this paper, we focus on further reducing the computation complexity of the existing state-of-the-art method to make the real-time 3D human pose estimation functionality applicable to devices with lower computing power. As a result, we propose two simple approaches to speed up the random-forest-based human pose estimation method. In the original algorithm, the random forest classifier is applied to all pixels of the segmented human depth image. We first use a multi-scale approach to reduce the number of such calculations. Second, the complexity of the random forest classification itself is decreased by the proposed cascade approach. Experiment results for real data show that our method is effective and works in real time (30 fps) without any parallelization efforts.

  • In this paper, the contrast enhancement method of thermal image is proposed and it is the plateau equalization algorithm using local histogram for the real time display of infrared imagery. Through hardware implementing, its practicality and adequacy are proved. Examinations are executed to verify the effect of contrast enhancement by bright control and contrast control automatic to the plateau value in the manual mode, and that verified the effect of contrast enhancement in the automatic mode and the practicality in the real system. According to the experiment results, the proposed "the application of local histogram and plateau equalization algorithm for contrast enhancement of real time thermal image"in this dissertation is the verified method for the thermal imaging contrast enhancement.

  • This study proposed a new approach to intelligent control of a mobile robot system by back properpagation based on multi-layer neural network. A experiment result is given in which some artificial assumptions about the linear and the angluar velocities of mobile robots from recent literature are dropped. In this study, we proposed a new thinique to impliment the real time conrol of he position and velocity of mobile robots. With the proposed control techinique, mobile robots can now globally follow any path such as a straight line, a circle and the path approaching th toe origin using proposed controller. Computer simulations are presented, which confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm. Moreover, practical experimental results concerning the real time control are reported with several real line constraints for mobile robots with two wheel driving.

  • A quantitative analytical method to detect new lines of genetically modified (GM) maize, NK603 and TC1507, has been developed by using a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). To detect these GM lines, two specific primer pairs and probes were designed. A plasmid as a reference molecule was constructed from an endogenous DNA sequence of maize, a universal sequence of a cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter used in most GMOs, and each DNA sequence specific to the NK603 and TC1507 lines. For the validation of this method, the test samples of 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0, and 10.0% each of the NK603 and TC1507 GM maize were quantitated. At the 3.0% level, the biases (mean vs. true value) for the NK603 and TC1507 lines were 3.3% and 15.7%, respectively, and their relative standard deviations were 7.2% and 5.5%, respectively. These results indicate that the PCR method developed in this study can be used to quantitatively detect the NK603 and TC1507 lines of GM maize.

  • A computer vision system applied to an intelligent safety vehicle has been required to be worked on a small sized real time special purposed hardware not on a general purposed computer. In addition, the system should have a high reliability even under the adverse road traffic environment. This paper presents a design and an implementation of an onboard hardware system taking into account for high speed image processing to analyze a road traffic scene. The system is mainly composed of two parts: an early processing module of FPGA and a postprocessing module of DSP. The early processing module is designed to extract several image primitives such as the intensity of a gray level image and edge attributes in a real-time Especially, the module is optimized for the Sobel edge operation. The postprocessing module of DSP utilizes the image features from the early processing module for making image understanding or image analysis of a road traffic scene. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated by an experiment of a lane-related information extraction. The experiment shows the successful results of image processing speed of twenty-five frames of 320$\times$240 pixels per second.

  • In this study, the spill and leak system is developed to provide real-time remote monitoring of industrial complexes where chemical accidents have been occurring every year. The spill and leak monitoring system uses IR-RCD equipment mounted on a 70m-high steel tower to detect chemical substances, thereby detecting chemical accidents such as leaks, fires, and explosions in real time. If IR-RCD equipment can actually detect chemical substances at a long distance, accurate and rapid initial response can be expected. Therefore, in order to confirm that IR-RCD equipment can detect chemical leakage accidents occurring at a long distance, acetone was selected as the experimental substance and a detection experiment was designed. The experiment was conducted using the acetone pool evaporation method at the wharf which was located 1.5 km away from IR-RCD equipment, and it was confirmed whether IR-RCD equipment could detect acetone in real time through the control monitor.

  • Because arrhythmia occurs irregularly, it should be examined for at least 24 hours for accurate diagnosis. For this reason, this paper developed firmware software for arrhythmia detection and prevented consumption of temporal and human resources and enabled continuous management and early diagnosis. Prior to the experiment, the interval between the R peaks of the QRS Complex was calculated using the Pan-Tompkins algorithm. The developed firmware software designed and implemented an algorithm to detect arrhythmia such as tachycardia, bradycardia, ventricular tachycardia, persistent tachycardia, and non-persistent tachycardia, and a data transmission format to monitor the collected data based on BLE. As a result of the experiment, arrhythmia was found in real time according to the change in BPM as designed in this paper. And the data quality for BLE communication was verified by comparing the sensor's serial communication value with the Android application reception value. In the future, wearable devices for real-time arrhythmia detection will be lightweight and developed firmware software will be applied.

  • Guest operating systems running over the virtual machines share a variety of resources. Since CPU is allocated in a time division manner it consequently leads them to having the unknown physical time. It is not regarded as a serious problem in the server virtualization fields. However, it becomes critical in embedded systems because it prevents guest OS from executing real time tasks when it does not occupy CPU. In this paper we propose a hypercall to register a timer service to notify the timer request related real time. It enables hypervisor to schedule a virtual machine which has real time tasks to execute, and allows guest OS to take CPU on time to support real time. The following experiment shows its implementation on Xen-Arm and para-virtualized Linux. We also analyze the real time performance with response time of test application and frames per second of Mplayer.

  • Numerous devices exist for reducing or eliminating seismic damage to structures. These include passive dampers, semi-active dampers, and active control devices. The performance of structural systems with these devices has often been evaluated using numerical simulations. Experiments on structural systems with these devices, particularly at large-scale, are lacking. This paper describes a real-time hybrid testing facility that has been developed at the Lehigh University NEES Equipment Site. The facility enables real-time large-scale experiments to be performed on structural systems with rate-dependent devices, thereby permitting a more complete evaluation of the seismic performance of the devices and their effectiveness in seismic hazard reduction. The hardware and integrated control architecture for hybrid testing developed at the facility are presented. An application involving the use of passive elastomeric dampers in a three story moment resisting frame subjected to earthquake ground motions is presented. The experiment focused on a test structure consisting of the damper and diagonal bracing, which was coupled to a nonlinear analytical model of the remaining part of the structure (i.e., the moment resisting frame). A tracking indictor is used to track the actuator ability to achieve the command displacement during a test, enabling the quality of the test results to be assessed. An extension of the testbed to the real-time hybrid testing of smart structures with semi-active dampers is described.

  • In this study, we developed the real-time controller for control loading system (CLS) of aircraft simulator. The CLS is given the forces as inputs: the exerted force by a pilot, which is determined according to the position of the control stick, and the calculated force by the host computer. And then CLS makes the pilot feel the back loading force by supplying the motor drive with the actuator signal. The developed real-time controller for CLS is organized into the five parts which are the position sensing part including a encoder, the A/D converter part for the analog load cell signal, the communication interface part to communicate with the host, the D/A converter for the actuator signal, and the CPU DSP2812 to carry out a control algorithm. We constructed the test control loading system and carried out the experiment with the developed real-time controller. The experimental results showed that the real-time controller generates the back loading forces similar to the desired back loading force graph.
