  • The aim of this study is to find out the effect of reading aloud science books on change of attitude toward the science, interest of instruction. Participants included 52 elementary school students. For this study, two classes were divided into experimental class and control class. The control class takes a regular instructions and the experimental class takes a reading aloud instructions. Two chapter were selected, 'Volcano and Rocks' and 'Family of the Sun', for this study. Students were treated for 12 hours. All the results were analyzed quantitatively and following conclusions were made. The students' scientific attitude in the experimental class were higher than those of students in the control class. However, according to statistical analysis, this result is meaningless. In the sub-parts, critical ability, cooperation and creativity were improved meaningfully. Instruction with reading aloud science books didn't show a meaningful difference in interest of instruction. However, in the sub-part, they showed meaningful improvement in attention and relevance.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the factors influencing preschoolers' emergent English as a second language literacy skills in terms of maternal language behavior in Korean and English picture book reading. This study was also conducted in order to identify the pathways of each factor. The subjects consisted of 201 mothers and their 3~5 year-old children from middle income families living in Seoul, Incheon, Gyyounggi-do, and Chungcheongbuk-do. The results indicated that the factors influencing preschoolers' emergent English as a second language literacy skills acquisition were as follows : maternal beliefs about the value of picture book reading, the child's level of interest in picture book reading, the time spent on picture book reading and maternal language behavior during picture book reading activities. The results further indicate that it is important that the mother shares desirable language interaction with her children in their native language while reading not only Korean but also English picture books when aiming to improve preschoolers' emergent English literacy skills.

  • As society has more interest in reading activities, it has become possible to secure social value of libraries through the promotion of reading. In this regard, the study aimed to analyze social tasks that the libraries face and suggest concrete methods through bibliographical examination. Currently, various regions of the nation have an increasing interest in libraries, particularly, children's libraries. The public libraries can expand their social roles by meeting these social requests. As a variety of activities by the public libraries to promote reading have helped people recognize the importance of libraries, more aggressive reading promotion activities are considered to help expand the roles of the public libraries and secure social base. Accordingly, the libraries need to take the initiative in implementing various measures by establishing a committee to adjust various reading promotion activities in the government and the public and private sectors, coming up with legal base, pursuing development of voluntary reading promotion programs, establishing an information network for reading and books, publishing book reviews, leading campaign for reading and reading promotion activities, supporting reading at home and expanding award system with regard to the promotion of reading.

  • In recent decades, analyzing the activities of human brain achieved some accomplishments by using the functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) technique. fMRI data provide a sequence of three-dimensional images related to human brain's activity which can be used to detect instantaneous cognitive states by applying machine learning methods. In this paper, we propose a new approach for distinguishing human's cognitive states such as "observing a picture" versus "reading a sentence" and "reading an affirmative sentence" versus "reading a negative sentence". Since fMRI data are high dimensional (about 100,000 features in each sample), extremely sparse and noisy, feature selection is a very important step for increasing classification accuracy and reducing processing time. We used the Fisher Discriminant Ratio to select the most powerful discriminative features from some Regions of Interest (ROIs). The experimental results showed that our approach achieved the best performance compared to other feature extraction methods with the average accuracy approximately 95.83% for the first study and 99.5% for the second study.

  • Despite many changes occurring in the objects and methods of reading, the importance of reading as the most effective means of developing human intellectual ability is consistently emphasized. However, in Korea, reading tends to be perceived as a part of tedious and rigid education or learning activities rather than an act of giving pleasure and joy while accompanied by fun and interest. In addition, compared to the high interest and emphasis on reading, discussions on reading programs to systematically implement them are relatively insufficient, and it is difficult to find a study in Korea that grasp the overall research trend in the field of reading programs. Accordingly, in order to generally examine research trends in the field of domestic reading programs, an intellectual structure analysis method based on keyword profiling was applied. In particular, basic analysis, keyword analysis, research area analysis, and analysis by period and year were performed in stages based on the keywords of theses and academic journal articles in the domestic reading program field retrieved from the RISS database. In addition, future research tasks were presented by comprehensively reviewing the research trends of domestic reading programs identified as a result of this intellectual structure analysis.

  • This study investigated the effects of an Augmented Reality(AR) implemented book on flow of reading, interest in history, and acquisition of history knowledge. Perceptions of AR infused books were investigated as well. Researchers provided a history book implementing AR and the same book without any AR content respectively to an experiment group(n=15) and a control group(n=15) composed of $3^{rd}$ and $4^{th}$ grade elementary school children. Results indicate that AR implemented reading had a positive effect on the flow of reading and interest in history, but not on acquisition of history knowledge. Also, AR-based contents were attractive to learners due to its amusing characters, sound, realistic visual motions, and vivid three-dimensional effects. Lastly, students preferred amusing interesting characters, lengthier animations and subtitles, and AR that could be seen without holding smart devices for a long while.

  • The aim of this research is to see if there are any relationships between reading disposition, career attitude maturity and self-leading learning trait among gifted and general elementary school students. The research results show that: in reading disposition, gifted students showed higher result compared to the general students at reading interest and reading experience, but were not different in reading environment. Also, gifted students showed higher results in career attitude maturity in determination, purposes, assurance, but were not different in readiness and independence. Additionally, gifted students showed higher results at self-directed learning in 8 sub-categories, which are openness to learning, self notion, taking-initiative ability, responsibility, learning zeal, future-oriented self-knowledge, creativity, and self assessment. In addition, the research indicates that career attitude maturity is correlated with reading interest, reading experience and reading environment. Also, self-leading learning is correlated with reading interest, reading experience and reading environment. On the basis of this research, the following are suggested. The research was conducted for elementary school students in 4th~6th grades. Hence, the research needs to be extended to middle school and high school students. And, in order to guide students' careers and improve students' self-leading learning ability, those results need to be applied to real educational situations. In addition, research need to be done to find out what kind of books have more effect on career attitude maturity and self-directed learning trait.

  • The 2009 revised curriculum has been revised to increase the time allocated to creative discretion. Accordingly, in many schools, discretionary activities have been replaced by reading and essay writing. However, these activities do not differ from existing classes and student's interest in those activities is minimal. This study has applied two kind of the AR program, which is designed and implemented using Smartphone in the classroom, to increase student's interest. A browser-based AR, created by Junaio and QCAR-authored Smartphone-based AR fairy tale book, are easy to use in class by the students themselves. We applies to Fourth grade student in reading education this AR programs. As a result of test, the students in actual reading classes responded that their interest in the lesson and their understanding of fairy tales has increased.

  • In this paper, we propose a news article recommendation system that reflects users' areas of interest and reading habits. Users can select interesting subject then our proposed system displays interesting articles above the other articles. Also the proposed system reflects users' dynamic interests using analyse of user's reading habits. The method of dynamic interest applies the different weight values from users simply clicking and reading entire articles. When users read articles from specific areas, the prosed system increases the weight of these specific areas using XML structure information. Hence users can read their articles of interest with ease.
