  • This study investigates the effect of cloze procedure using either cartoons or texts on academic interests and reading achievements. Three equivalent classes were selected from an 1st grade in elementary school in terms of academic interests and reading achievements. While two experimental conditions used cloze procedure either with cartoons or texts during 15 lessons, the control condition used a traditional reading procedure. The results indicated that cloze procedure with cartoons enhanced academic interests in reading only for low achievement participants. Cloze procedure condition also outperformed the control condition on both immediate and delayed dictation test. In particular, cloze procedure with cartoons were quite effective for low achievement participants. Lastly, both types of cloze procedure facilitated overall comprehension test score, specifically inferential understanding test score but not factual understanding test score. Based on these findings, the types of text and learning strategy to improve academic interests and reading-related achievements were discussed.

  • This survey was conducted to investigate liberal arts college students' academic reading, to explore basic issues in their reading, and to provide how to improve their academic reading in their majors. The participants in this study were 457 students who enrolled in a college of liberal arts in a university. The study results represented as follows. Firstly, there were significant differences in vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fast-reading competence among student groups of different majors. Secondly, 66.9% of the students did not read widely in their major subjects throughout all departments. 67.7% of the students with low reading performance responded that they could complete college courses only with course textbook reading, course participation, and requirement submission. Thirdly, regarding the number of major subject books that the participants read, 82.1% of the students read less than 15 books, while 11.3% read less than a book. The students' academic reading hours during per week were less than 5 hours for 68.9% students and less than 10 hours for 13.9% respectively. Based on the results (departmental differences in reading competence, wide reading in major subject books, and liberal arts students' reading hours), liberal arts colleges need to design programs to guarantee quality and quantity in reading major subject books.

  • This study investigated the effects of macrostructure on discourse processing. In this study, three different story were employed to form macrostructures on different times, and reading time, sentence verification time and free recall rate were measured as dependent vari- ables. The results showed that forming the macrostructure influenced the reading and verification times and the recall rate. The results were interpreted to indicate that the macrostructure is important to comprehend and recall the stories, and that the story grammars, hierarchies of story schema and causal relation of sentences affect the comprehension and recall through their interaction in macrostructure.

  • This study aimed to identify the problems of college students in reading the literature and on the basis of the identified problems, to suggest the approaches to solve the problems. To this end, time required for reading passages, reading patterns, understanding, memory and reading habits and attitudes were analyzed with the freshmen in A university. In accordance with the analysis results, 58% of subjects was good and 42% was not sufficient on the basis of the averages in Scholastic Aptitude Test. Second, 77% of subjects had the good patterns but 23% showed certain problems in reading patterns. Third, 69% and 67% of subjects illustrated good results in the analysis on understanding and memory, respectively. However, 31% and 33% were evaluated as being on the general level or requiring efforts in the analysis on understanding and memory, respectively. Next, according to the analysis on reading habits and attitudes, 77% had no problems but 23% required improvement. For solving the problems identified through the analysis, it is recommended to develop the scientific and standardized evaluation tools for evaluating the reading ability of college students. Second, it is necessary to evaluate the reading ability, habit and attitude during the screening process for admission or after admission. Finally, it is required to operate the Fundamental Academic Ability Learning Center(tentative name) to improve the ability of students who show the insufficient results in evaluation.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of group co-learning on English reading ability and motivation and the change in group co-learning perception after planning and applying a group co-study class program that can be applied in university liberal arts English class. In order to achieve this goal, the experiment team (34 students) conducted the class from September 2 to December 13, 2019 for 62 freshmen who participated in the compulsory liberal arts English class at the four-year university in North Chungcheong Province, and the control team (28 students) conducted the class as a typical lecture class based on the basis of cooperative learning. The English proficiency of the learners was approached by dividing the area of academic proficiency into English reading skills and the area of justice into English reading motivations. The pre-experimental learners' English reading skills were measured by excerpting the national level educational achievement assessment (high 2). The research results are as follows. First, it was shown that the English reading ability score of a group that applied group cooperative learning and the English reading ability score of a group that did not apply group cooperative learning were statistically significant differences. Second, there was a difference between the English reading motivation score of the group applying the convocation group cooperative learning and the English reading motivation score of the group not applied. Third, the change in the perception of groups applying the convocation group cooperative learning occurred before and after the experiment. This study found that the awareness of English reading, English reading motivation, and cooperative learning increased through cooperative learning among university students during liberal arts English classes, which has a positive effect on self-identity and so on.

  • Although vocabulary is one of the most important aspects in learning English, it is not dealt with as extensively as the grammar and reading comprehension in the classes due to time limitation. Furthermore, it is also dealt with in only a limited way at most of the English learning web sites compared to the other aspects such as grammar and reading comprehension. In this study. a web-based learning system for English vocabulary which allows a student to study the vocabulary before or after the classes by herself in order to supplement the English classes provided at school. Especially, it allows the students to learn the vocabulary within the context of sentences. It also provides an efficient structure for a repeated study of vocabulary that is new or difficult to the student.

  • In the field of patents, as NLP(Natural Language Processing) is a challenging task due to the linguistic specificity of patent literature, there is an urgent need to research a language model optimized for Korean patent literature. Recently, in the field of NLP, there have been continuous attempts to establish a pre-trained language model for specific domains to improve performance in various tasks of related fields. Among them, ELECTRA is a pre-trained language model by Google using a new method called RTD(Replaced Token Detection), after BERT, for increasing training efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to propose KorPatELECTRA pre-trained on a large amount of Korean patent literature data. In addition, optimal pre-training was conducted by preprocessing the training corpus according to the characteristics of the patent literature and applying patent vocabulary and tokenizer. In order to confirm the performance, KorPatELECTRA was tested for NER(Named Entity Recognition), MRC(Machine Reading Comprehension), and patent classification tasks using actual patent data, and the most excellent performance was verified in all the three tasks compared to comparative general-purpose language models.
