Elimination of soluble boron from reactor design eliminates boron-induced reactivity accidents and leads to a more negative moderator temperature coefficient. However, a large negative moderator temperature coefficient can lead to large reactivity feedback that could allow the reactor to return to power when it cools down from hot full power to cold zero power. In soluble boron-free small modular reactor (SMR) design, only control rods are available to control such rapid core transient. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether an SMR would have enough control rod worth to compensate for large reactivity feedback. The investigation begins with classification of reactivity and completes an analysis of the reactivity balance in each reactor state for the SMR model. The control rod worth requirement obtained from the reactivity balance is a minimum control rod worth to maintain the reactor critical during the whole cycle. The minimum available rod worth must be larger than the control rod worth requirement to manipulate the reactor safely in each reactor state. It is found that the SMR does have enough control rod worth available during rapid transient to maintain the SMR at subcritical below k-effectives of 0.99 for both hot zero power and cold zero power.

Several vendors have recently been actively pursuing the development of integral pressurized water reactors (iPWRs) that range in power levels from small to large reactors. Integral reactors have the features of minimum vessel penetrations, passive heat removal after reactor shutdown, and modular construction that allow fast plant integration and a secure fuel cycle. The features of an integral reactor limit the options for placing control and safety system instruments. The development of instrumentation and control (I&C) strategies for a large 1,000 MWe iPWR is described. Reactor system modeling-which includes reactor core dynamics, primary heat exchanger, and the steam flashing drum-is an important part of I&C development and validation, and thereby consolidates the overall implementation for a large iPWR. The results of simulation models, control development, and instrumentation features illustrate the systematic approach that is applicable to integral light water reactors.
We developed an achievable control logic for the reactor power level during a power maneuvering event and set up some constraints for the control of the reactor power in a conceptual sodium-cooled fast reactor (KALIMER-600) that was developed at KAERI. For simulating the dynamic behaviors of the plant, we developed a fast-running performance analysis code. Through various simulations of the power maneuvering event, we evaluated some suggested control logic for the reactor power and found an achievable control logic. The objective of the control logic is to search for the position of the control rods that would keep the average temperature of the primary pool constant and, concurrently, minimize the power deviation between the reactor and the BOP cycle during the power maneuvering. In addition, the flow rates of the primary pool and the intermediate loop should be changed according to the power level in order to not violate the constraints set up in this study. Also, we evaluated some movement speeds of the control rods and found that a fast movement of the control rods might cause the power to fluctuate during the power maneuvering event. We suggested a reasonable movement speed of the control rods for the developed control logic.

The main function of a reactor protection system is to maintain the reactor core integrity and the reactor coolant system pressure boundary. Generally, the reactor protection system adopts the 2-out-of-m redundant architecture to assure a reliable operation. This paper describes the safety assessment of a digital reactor protection system using the fault tree analysis technique. The fault tree technique can be expressed in terms of combinations of the basic event failures such as the random hardware failures, common cause failures, operator errors, and the fault tolerance mechanisms implemented in the reactor protection system. In this paper, a prediction method of the hardware failure rate is suggested for a digital reactor protection system, and applied to the reactor protection system being developed in Korea to identify design weak points from a safety point of view.
Improved load-following capability is one of the most important technical tasks of a pressurized water reactor. Controlling the nuclear reactor core during load-following operation leads to some difficulties. These difficulties mainly arise from nuclear reactor core limitations in local power peaking: the core is subjected to sharp and large variation of local power density during transients. Axial offset (AO) is the parameter usually used to represent the core power peaking. One of the important local power peaking components in nuclear reactors is axial power peaking, which continuously changes. The main challenge of nuclear reactor control during load-following operation is to maintain the AO within acceptable limits, at a certain reference target value. This article proposes a new robust approach to AO control of pressurized water reactors during load-following operation. This method uses robust feedback-linearization control based on the multipoint kinetics reactor model (neutronic and thermal-hydraulic). In this model, the reactor core is divided into four nodes along the reactor axis. Simulation results show that this method improves the reactor load-following capability in the presence of parameter uncertainty and disturbances and can use optimum control rod groups to maneuver with variable overlapping.
The control rod assembly controls reactor power by adjusting its position during normal operation and shuts down chain reactions by its free drop under scram conditions. Therefore, the drop performance of the control rod assembly is important for the safety of a nuclear reactor. In this study, the drop performance of the conceptually designed control rod assembly for the prototype generation IV sodium-cooled fast reactor that is being developed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute as a next-generation nuclear reactor was experimentally investigated. For the performance test, the test facility and test procedure were established first, and several free drop performance tests of the control rod assembly under different flow rate conditions were then carried out. Moreover, performance tests under several types and magnitudes of seismic loading conditions were also conducted to investigate the effects of seismic loading on the drop performance of the control rod assembly. The drop time of the conceptually designed control rod assembly for 0% of the tentatively designed flow rate was measured to be 1.527 seconds, and this agrees well with the analytically calculated drop time. It was also observed that the effect of seismic loading on the drop time was not significant.

This paper presents the drop performance test of the control rod assembly which is one of the main components strongly related to the safety of the prototype generation IV sodium-cooled fast reactor. To investigate the drop performance, a real-sized control rod assembly that was recently modified based on the drop analysis results was newly fabricated, and several free drop tests under different flow rate conditions were carried out. Then the results were compared with those obtained from the previous tests conducted on the conceptually designed control rod assembly to demonstrate the improvement in performance. Moreover, the drop performance tests under several types and magnitudes of seismic loadings were also conducted to investigate the effect of the seismic loading on the drop performance of the modified control rod assembly. The results showed that the effects of the type and magnitude of the seismic loading on the drop performance of the modified control rod assembly were not significant. Also, the drop time requirement was successfully satisfied, even under the seismic loading conditions.
A neuro-fuzzy algorithm is presented for nuclear reactor power control in a pressurized water reactor. Automatic reacotr power control is complicated by the use of control rods because of highly nonlinear dynamics in the axial power shape. Thus, manual shaped controls are usually employed even for the limited capability during the power maneuvers. In an attempt to achieve automatic shape control, a neuro-fuzzy approach is considered because fuzzy algorithms are good at various aspects of operator's knowledge representation while neural networks are efficinet structures capable of learning from experience and adaptation to a changing nuclear core state. In the proposed neuro-fuzzy control scheme, the rule base is formulated based ona multi-input multi-output system and the dynamic back-propagation is used for learning. The neuro-fuzzy powere control algorithm has been tested using simulation fesponses of a Korean standard pressurized water reactor. The results illustrate that the proposed control algorithm would be a parctical strategy for automatic nuclear reactor power control.
It is shown that in the IBR-2M reactor by the end of the reactor cycle, changes in dynamics are observed associated with a strong weakening of the fast power feedback (PF), as a result of which the reactor becomes oscillatorily unstable. After each week of zero-power operation the negative changes in reactor dynamics disappear and the stability of the reactor is restored. Thus, the reactor undergoes cyclic changes in the oscillatory instability. The correlation between of a fast PF and a slow PF is experimentally observed, which makes it possible to almost completely eliminate the cyclic component of instability by changing the control mode of rods of the control system.

A mathematical model is developed to represent the batch reactor for free radical polymerization of PMMA The model is validated by comparing the simulation result with the experimental data. A computational scheme is proposed to determine the trajectory of the reactor temperature that will produce polymer product having the desired molecular weight distribution. For this instantaneous number average chain length and polydispersity are introduced to calculate the reactor temperature. The former is assumed to be a second order polynomial of the sum of the living and dead polymer concentrations. Various reactor temperature, trajectories are observed depending on the reactor conditions and prescribed molecular weight distributions. Fuzzy and PID control algorithms are applied to trace the reactor temperature trajectory. While the PID control gives rise to an overshoot when the trajectory changes its direction, the fuzzy controller yields a more satisfactory performance because it secures information on the trajectory pattern.
