The reactive compatibilization of amorphous poly-${\alpha}$-olefins (APAO)/amorphous polyamide (aPA) blends was carried out using two kinds of reactive compatibilizers such as maleated polypropylene and ethylene-glycidyl methacrylate-methyl acrylate copolymer. The grafting reaction rates between aPA and the compatibilizers were examined using FT-IR, SEM and rheometer. The effect of the reactive compatibilization on the mechanical property of the blends was investigated with a universal testing machine. The adhesion strength of the blends including a hydrocarbon tackifier resin, C9 was also measured.
The kinetics of photoinitiated polymerization of reactive oligomer methacrylates and oligomer methacrylate/SBS blends have been studied to characterize the diffusion-controlled reaction using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy-Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR-FTIR). The polymerization rates of reactive oligomer methacrylates and oligomer methacrylate/SBS blends were autocatalytic in nature at the initial stage and then a retardation of the reaction conversion occurred gradually as the polymer matrix became vitrified, and finally the reaction became diffusion controlled. Photopolymerization behavior of methacrylate/SBS blends was well predicted using the diffusion-controlled reaction model. N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NVP) as a reactive solvent was used to incorporate SBS into methacrylate to form semi-IPN via photopolymerization. Due to the high reactivity of NVP, polymerization rate increased with the increase of NVP content. As the content of NVP-SBS in the blends increased up to 10 phr, the reaction conversion maintained almost constant. But above 20 phr of NVP-SBS in the blends, the reaction conversion gradually decreased since the increase of viscosity affected on the photopolymerization rate. The semi-IPN films of methacrylate/SBS blends were transparent at room temperature as well as at increased temperature and were able to be applied to surface coating.
Following our previous work, we have conducted further systematic studies to investigate the effects of reactive blending on the thermal and mechanical properties of blends of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and a liquid rubber, polybutadiene (LPB). The toughened PLAs were prepared by melt-blending the PLA with various contents (0-9 wt.%) of the LPB in the absence or presence of dicumyl peroxide (DCP), a radical initiator. It was found that the rubber domains were homogeneously dispersed at the nanoscale in the PLA matrix up to 9 wt.% of LPB thanks to the reactive blending in the presence of DCP. Owing to the compatibilization of PLA with LPB through reactive blending, the elongation and toughness of PLA was enhanced, while the hydrolytic degradation of PLA was reduced.
Conductive polymer blends and composites are widely used for different safety application such as electrostatic charge dissipation(ESD), electromagnetic interference(EMI) shielding, electrostatic prevention and safety chemical sensor. In order to prepare a impedance-type humidity sensor that is durable at high humidities and high temperature, electically conductive polymer blends based on diallyldimethylammonium chloride(DADMAC) and epoxy were prepared in this study. The polymer blends type conductive ionomer exhibits reaction each other DADMAC and epoxy in FT-IR and DSC analysis. The blends material was traced by new peak at 1600cm-1 and appeard improvement of thermal resistance by melting point shift. Alumina substrate was deposited a pair of gold electrodes by screen printing. The blend material were spin-coated with a thin film type on the surface of alumina substrate. The polymer bleld type sensor exhibits a linear impedance increasing better than DADMAC coated humidity sensor. Also it shows good sensitivity, low hysteresis and durability against high humidity.

Morphological, thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of reactive compatabilized blends of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and Polyamide-6 (PA) containing EGMA copolymer were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), advanced rheometric expansion system (ARES), and universal testing machine (UTM). From the results of thermal analysis by DSC, the melting point of the 30/70 PBT-PA blend was broadened after EGMA was added in the blends, since the enthalpy of melting of the PBT-PA somewhat decreased with the increase of EGMA content. From this result, it is suggested that the EGMA affected to the crystallization behavior and crystallinity of the PBT-PA blends. From SEM micrographs of the 70/30, 50/50, and 30/70 PBT-PA blends, the droplet size of the 30/70 PBT-PA blend was about 0.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ which was smaller than that of the 50/50 and 70/30 PBT-PA blends. The complex viscosity of the 30/70 PBT-PA blend observed to be higher than that of the 50/50 and 70/30 PBT-PA blends. From the results of the morphology and rheological properties for the PBT-PA blends, it is suggested that the compatibility is increased in the 30/70 PBT-PA blend than the 50/50 and 70/30 PBT-PA blends. From the results of mechanical properties, it was found that the tensile strength of the 30/70 PBT-PA blend increased with the increase of EGMA up to 2 phr, while tensile strength of the blend in which EGMA content was higher than 2 phr decreased with the increase of EGMA content. From the results of morphological, thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties for the PBT-PA-EGMA blends, it is suggested that the EGMA could be used as a compatibilization role in the blends.

The effect of transesterification on the rheological properties in the melt reactive blending of poly(butylene terephthalate)(PBT) with poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) has been studied. The melt viscosity depression in PBT was found in PBT/PET blends due to the intrinsic low melt viscosity of PET compared to PBT. In addition, the thermal degradation in the melt blending and transesterification between two polyesters were considered as other factors fer the lowering of the melt viscosity in the blends. In the PBT/PET blends, calcium stearate was less effective than in PBT as a lubricant, however it accelerated both the thermal degradation and transesterification during melt blending. As a result, further melt viscosity drop was obtained in the reactive melt blending of PBT/PET.

Blends of poly(l-lactide) (PLA) and low density polyethylene (LDPE) were prepared by melt mixing in order to improve the brittleness of PLA. A reactive compatibilizer with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), PE-GMA, was required as a compatibilizer due to the immiscibility between PLA and LDPE. It contributes to reduce the domain size of dispersed phase and enhance the tensile properties of PLA/LDPE blends, especially for PLA matrix blends. A reaction product between PLA and PE-GMA, which was formed during melt-mixing and considered to act as a reactive compatibilizer, was characterized using $ ^1H-NMR$ spectroscopy.
RPP(maleic-anhydride grafted PP)and OPS(oxazoline grafted PS) do not react to each other, and thus show immiscibility. In this study, Nylons was added to RPP/OPS blend systems, as a reactive compatibilizer for enhancing the miscibility of the blends. When Nylon6 was added to the blends of RPP and OPS, RPP/Nylon6/OPS was produced. The effects of the molar ratio of Nylon6 on the RPP-Nylon6-OPS reaction were studied. Torque test and FT-IR analysis have been carried out to investigate the reaction of RPP/Nylon6/OPS system. The reaction torgue ratio and reaction efficiency show the maximum values at 1 : 0.66 : 1 and 1 : 1 : 1 (in moles) for RPP/Nylon6/OPS. In the RPP/Nylon6/OPS blends, their mechanical properties were changed with the molar ratio of Nylon6 and showed the highest value at molar ratio of 1.5. Physical properties and compatibility of RPP/Nylon6/OPS were compared with those of PP/Nylon6/OPS. Consequently, RPP/Nylon6/OPS plays a proper role as a reactive compatibilizer to the PP/PS blend system.

Compatibilizers contribute to many processes in polymer industry, such as manufacturing polymer blends and composites. They are usually designed to be block or graft form which is combined in polar and non-polar parts in the first synthesis process level, for example, the general form of maleic anhydride (MA) as a compatiblizer is a grafted counterpart. However, the process of making the compatibilizer is related to the first synthesis level and it has some problems, such as high cost, poor processability, limitation on use and properties, and so on. So, in order to improve its poor processability and overcome the limitation on use, we developed compatibilizers which have various chemical forms by high intensity ultrasound and super critical fluid nitrogen in polymer melt reactive extrusion.
