One-step continuous reactive blend with EPDM is investigated using a modular intermeshing corotating twin screw extruder This was performed via anionic polymerization mechanism. Mechanical properties were characterized and compared with mechanical blends.
A mixed bi-functional reactive dye has been applied to the cotton and the cotton/hemp blend and their dyeing and fastness properties were compared. The cotton/hemp blend exhibited higher exhaustion values and better build-up property than cotton, presumably due to the lower crystallinity. Hence, the reproducibility of dyeing of hemp is expected to be excellent. Fastness properties of reactive dyes on cotton and cotton/hemp blend are found to be almost identical. The results obtained suggest that hemp in cellulosic fabric could be used as an important alternative to universal cotton in cellulose fabrics.
Reactive monomer, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), was grafted onto low density polyethylene (LDPE) using peroxide and then reactive blend with nylon-6 was rallied out by corotating twin screw extruder. Grafting of GMA was identified using FT-IR. Graft ratio or GMA increased with reaction temperature, peroxide concentration and styrene comonomer concentration. It is observed that tensile elongation and tensile strength or LDPE-g-GMA/nylon-6 blend were higher than those of LDPE/nylon-6 blend. Morphology of blend was analyzed using SEM.
Five temporarily solubilized reactive disperse dyes were synthesized and characterized. They were applied to polyester/cotton blend fabric using one-bath dyeing method without dispersing agent. The dye that has azonaphthalene chro-mophore seemed to not only be exhausted on polyester but also react with cotton. But other dyes were selectively dyed on polyester and showed limited uptake on cotton. Good levelling as well as moderate to good colour fastness was obtained with the dyes on P/C blend fabric.
Copolymer of Styrene and GMA(glycidyl methachylate), having reactive ratios of $r_1=0.53$, $r_2=0.44$, was synthesized in dioxane using AIBN as free radical initiator. Followed by the reaction of ethylene diamine with copolymer PGS, amine groups were introduced to the PGS(NPGS). The composition of copolymer was determined by elemental analyzer. Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) was obtained in benzene using AIBN as free radical initiator. The NPGS-PGMA blend of 50/50 composition was prepared by mixing these polymers in THF at $65^{\circ}C$. Glass transition temperature (Tg) of NPGS-PGMA blend was measured by DSC. The blend showed a single Tg. Accordingly, it was clear that the NPGS was compatible with PGMA. An intermolecular reaction between amine groups of NPGS and epoxy groups of PGMA imparts compatibility in the NPGS-PGMA blend. When the NPGS-PGMA blend was added to the incompatible PS-PGMA blend, PS-PGMA blend showed Tg change. Scanning Electron Micrograph(SEM) showed a fine morphology in this blend. Consequently, it was apparent that the NPGS-PGMA blend acted as a compatibilizer for the PS-PGMA blend.

Morphological, thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of reactive compatabilized blends of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and Polyamide-6 (PA) containing EGMA copolymer were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), advanced rheometric expansion system (ARES), and universal testing machine (UTM). From the results of thermal analysis by DSC, the melting point of the 30/70 PBT-PA blend was broadened after EGMA was added in the blends, since the enthalpy of melting of the PBT-PA somewhat decreased with the increase of EGMA content. From this result, it is suggested that the EGMA affected to the crystallization behavior and crystallinity of the PBT-PA blends. From SEM micrographs of the 70/30, 50/50, and 30/70 PBT-PA blends, the droplet size of the 30/70 PBT-PA blend was about 0.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ which was smaller than that of the 50/50 and 70/30 PBT-PA blends. The complex viscosity of the 30/70 PBT-PA blend observed to be higher than that of the 50/50 and 70/30 PBT-PA blends. From the results of the morphology and rheological properties for the PBT-PA blends, it is suggested that the compatibility is increased in the 30/70 PBT-PA blend than the 50/50 and 70/30 PBT-PA blends. From the results of mechanical properties, it was found that the tensile strength of the 30/70 PBT-PA blend increased with the increase of EGMA up to 2 phr, while tensile strength of the blend in which EGMA content was higher than 2 phr decreased with the increase of EGMA content. From the results of morphological, thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties for the PBT-PA-EGMA blends, it is suggested that the EGMA could be used as a compatibilization role in the blends.
The fixing behaviors of anthraquinone disperse dyes containing dimethylamino substituent, such as C. I. Disperse Violet 26(D.V.26) and C. I. Disperse Blue 14(D.V.14), or containing diamino substituent, such as C. I. Disperse Blue 73(D.B.73), and monochlorotriazinyl azo reactive dyes, such as C. I. Reactive Orange 13(R.O.13), C. I. Reactive Red 3(R.R.3). C. I. Reactive Yellow 2(R.Y.2) on polyester/cotton blend(P/C) fabrics were examined for the one-step printing of P/C fabrics. The high temperature steaming of $175^{\circ}C$ is the most satisfactory fixing method for P/C one-step printing with above disperse and reactive dyes among the four different fixing methods: $175^{\circ}C$ steaming, $102^{\circ}C$ steaming${\rightarrow}175^{\circ}C$ steaming, $190^{\circ}C$ thermosol, $102^{\circ}C$ steaming${\rightarrow}190^{\circ}C$ thermosol. $190^{\circ}C$ thermosol is unfit to fix R.R.3 and R.Y.2 whose heat stability is poor. It was found that D.V.26 and D.B.14 containing dimethylamino substituent are unstable for heat and alkali, but D.B.73 is stable for them to print P/C blend fabrics with R.O.13 which is also stable for heat. Therefore we found that D.B.73, R.O.13 and a pair of D.B.73 and R.O.13 were very suitable for one-step printing of P/C blend fabrics.
Nowadays natural textile materials should cope with the global warming. Soft, thin and light angora fibers which have two components. One is spiky hair and the other is soft hair. The spiky hairs have a disadvantage of pilling out. The soft hairs have promising properties comparable to cashmere goat hairs, which is cheap compared to very expensive cashmere goat hairs. In this study, we investigated the dyeing properties of angora/PET, Nylon blend fabrics to acid dyes and reactive dyes including various series of acid dyes and reactive dyes for the dyeing of the blended super soft angora fabrics and their potential for deep shade dyeing effects. Our focus is to get a relation between various kind of blend and their dyeability.
Polymer alloys of poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) and nylon6(PA6) which were not miscible each other by themselves were successfully prepared through melt compounding using a twin-screw extruder by utilizing epoxy as reactive compatibilizer. At the epoxy(DGEBA) amount of 0.5~2wt%, the domain size(average diameter) of the discontinuous phase could be reduced up to 0.2${\mu}m$ from 1-5${\mu}m$ that of the simple blend without epoxy. The reaction was presumed to happen mostly at interphase from the result of maximum increase of melt viscosity at the middle range of PET/PA6 blend ratio. It is expected that alloy fibers of PET/epoxy/PA6 with enough mechanical strength for use can be prepared.
