I reviewed an ecological and environmental significance of microbial carbon respiration coupled to dis-similatory reduction of fe(III) to Fe(II) which is one of the major processes controlling mineralization of organic matter and behavior of metals and nutrients in various anaerobic environments. Relative significance of Fe(III) reduction in the mineralization of organic matter in diverse marine environments appeared to be extremely variable, ranging from negligible up to $100\%$. Cenerally, Fe(III) reduction dominated anaerobic car-bon mineralization when concentrations of reactive Fe(III) were higher, indicating that availability of reactive Fe(III) was a major factor determining the relative significance of Fe(III) reduction in anaerobic carbon mineralization. In anaerobic coastal sediments where $O_2$ supply is limited, tidal flushing, bioturbation and vegetation were most likely responsible for regulating the availability of Fe(III) for Fe(III) reducing bacteria (FeRB). Capabilities of FeRB in mineralization of organic matter and conversion of metals implied that FeRB may function as a useful eco-technological tool for the bioremediation of anoxic coastal environments contaminated by toxic organic and metal pollutants.
In this study, compounds with azo-mesogenic groups at 4-, 3,5-, or 3,4,5-positions of one phenyl ring were synthesized, and their liquid crystallinity and photochemistry were investigated. The compounds in the Azo1 and Azo2 series had linear and planar geometries, respectively, while those in the Azo3 series had relatively bulky structures. Compounds of BA-Azo2 and BA-Azo3 did not show any liquid crystallinity. Compounds of BE-Azo1 and BE-Azo2 exhibited a monotropic liquid crystallinity, while the other compounds showed an enantiotropic liquid crystallinity. The liquid crystalline behavior was imparted by the azo-mesogenic groups, and most of the liquid crystalline compounds formed a smectic phase. All the RM-AzoX compounds exhibited photoisomerism because of the presence of the azo groups in the molecule. The rate of photoisomerization followed the order of RM-Azo3 < RM-Azo1 < RM-Azo2 and was considered to depend on the steric hindrance around the azobenzene groups in the molecule. These results suggest that the liquid crystallinity and photochemical property of the compounds are affected by the position or the number of azo-mesogenic groups phenyl ring of the molecule.

The effects of pressure and temperature on the autoignition of propane and n-butane blends were investigated using a rapid compression machine (RCM) , which is widely used to examine the autoignition characteristics. The RCM was designed to be capable of varying the compression ratio between 5 and 20 and minimize the vortex formation on the cylinder wall using a wedge-shaped crevice. The initial temperature and pressure of the compressed gas were varied in range of 720∼900 K and 1.6∼ 1.8 MPa, respectively, by adjusting the ratio of the specific heat of the mixture by altering the ratio of the non-reactive components (N$_2$, Ar) under a constant effective equivalence ratio (ø$\_$f/= 1.0) The gas temperature after the compression stroke could be obtained from the measured time-pressure record. The results showed a two-stage ignition delay and a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) behavior which were the unique characteristic of the alkane series fuels. As the propane concentration in the blend were increased from 20% and 40% propane, the autoignition delay time increased by approximately 41 % and 55% at 750 K. Numerical reduced kinetic modeling was performed using the Shell model, which introduced some important chemical ideas, represented by the generic species. Several rate coefficients were calibrated based on the experimental results to establish an autoignition model of the propane and n-butane blends. These coefficients can be used to predict the autoignition characteristics in LPG fueled Sl engines.

Energy storage system has been widely applied in power distribution sectors as well as in renewable energy sources to ensure uninterruptible power supply. This paper presents a model predictive algorithm to control a bidirectional AC-DC converter, which is used in an energy storage system for power transferring between the three-phase AC voltage supply and energy storage devices. This model predictive control (MPC) algorithm utilizes the discrete behavior of the converter and predicts the future variables of the system by defining cost functions for all possible switching states. Subsequently, the switching state that corresponds to the minimum cost function is selected for the next sampling period for firing the switches of the AC-DC converter. The proposed model predictive control scheme of the AC-DC converter allows bidirectional power flow with instantaneous mode change capability and fast dynamic response. The performance of the MPC controlled bidirectional AC-DC converter is simulated with MATLAB/Simulink(R) and further verified with 3.0kW experimental prototypes. Both the simulation and experimental results show that, the AC-DC converter is operated with unity power factor, acceptable THD (3.3% during rectifier mode and 3.5% during inverter mode) level of AC current and very low DC voltage ripple. Moreover, an efficiency comparison is performed between the proposed MPC and conventional VOC-based PWM controller of the bidirectional AC-DC converter which ensures the effectiveness of MPC controller.

The effect of low doses of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on morphology changes of cell has been studied based on the observation of the cell length. It was shown that UV-irradiated cell has different behavior in comparison with non-irradiated cell. From the histogram of cell-length distribution, it was confirmed that cell cycle of non irradiated cell was 28 hours, and that cell cycle of irradiated cell with dose of $20\;Jm^{-2}$ was delayed (39 hours), while irradiated cell with $40\;Jm^{-2}$ and $60\;Jm^{-2}$ did not divide and kept growing continuously. It was supposed that in case of $20\;Jm^{-2}$ of irradiation dose, the cell cycle was delayed because the checkpoint worked in order to repair DNA damage induced by generation of pyrimidine dimer, reactive oxygen species and so on. It was also supposed that in case of $40\;Jm^{-2}$ and $60\;Jm^{-2}$ of irradiation dose, overgrowth was induced because the checkpoint was not worked well. The morphology of overgrown cell was similar to that of normally senescent cell. Therefore, it was considered that cell senescence was accelerated by UV irradiation with irradiation doses of $40\;Jm^{-2}$ and $60\;Jm^{-2}$.

A series of experiments using atmospheric-pressure non-thermal plasma coupled with transition metal catalysts were performed to remove ethylene from agricultural storage facilities. The non-thermal plasma was created by dielectric barrier discharge, which was in direct contact with the catalyst pellets. The transition metals such as Ag and $V_2O_5$ were supported on ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. The effect of catalyst type, specific input energy (SIE) and oxygen content on the removal of ethylene was examined to understand the behavior of the hybrid plasma-catalytic reactor system. With the other parameters kept constant, the plasma-catalytic activity for the removal of ethylene was in order of $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ from high to low. Interestingly, the rate of plasma-catalytic ozone generation was in order of $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, implying that the catalyst activation mechanisms by plasma are different for different catalysts. The results obtained by varying the oxygen content indicated that nitrogen-derived reactive species dominated the removal of ethylene under oxygen-lean condition, while ozone and oxygen atoms were mainly involved in the removal under oxygen-rich condition. When the plasma was coupled with $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, nearly complete removal of ethylene was achieved at oxygen contents higher than 5% by volume (inlet ethylene: 250 ppm; gas flow rate: $1.0Lmin^{-1}$; SIE: ${\sim}355JL^{-1}$).
This research investigates the effect of the Crataegus pinnatifida BGE. var. major N.E. BR(CPVM) on Alzheimer's disease. Specifically, the effects of the DYHT extract on (1) $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6, amyloid precursor proteins(APP), acetylcholinesterase(AChE), and glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP) mRNA of PC-12 cells treated with CTI05; (2) the AChE activity and the APP production of PC-12 cell treated with CT105; (3) the behavior; and (4) expression of $IL-1{\beta}$, $TNF-{\alpha}$, reactive oxygen species(ROS), nitrite oxide(NO); and (5) the infarction area of the hippocampus, and brain tissue injury in Alzheimer's diseased mice induced with CT105 were investigated. The results are as follow. 1. The CPVM extract suppressed the expression of $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6, APP, AChE, and GFAP mRNA in PC-12 cells treated with CT105. 2. The CPVM extract suppressed the AChE activity and the production of APP significantly in PC-12 cells treated with CT105. 3. The CPVM extract group showed a significant inhibitory effect on the memory deficit for the mice with Alzheimer's disease induced by CT105 in the Morris water maze experiment. 4. The CPVM extract suppressed the over-expression of $IL-1{\beta}$, $TNF-{\alpha}$, ROS and NO in the mice with Alzheimer's disease induced by CT105. 5. The CPVM extract reduced the infarction area of hippocampus, and controlled the injury of brain tissue in the mice with Alzheimer's disease induced by CT105. These results suggest that the CPVM extract may be effective for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
Chromium nitride (CrN) samples with two different layer structures (multilayer and single layer) were coated on bipolar plates of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) using the reactive sputtering method. The effects with respect to layer structure on corrosion resistance and overall cell performance were investigated. A continuous and thin chromium nitride layer ($Cr_{0.48}\;N_{0.52}$) was formed on the surface of the SUS 316L when the nitrogen flow rate was 10 sccm. The electrochemical stability of the coated layers was examined using the potentiodynamic and potentiostatic methods in the simulated corrosive circumstances of the PEMFC under $80^{\circ}C$. Interfacial contact resistance (ICR) between the CrN coated sample and the gas diffusion layer was measured by using Wang's method. A single cell performance test was also conducted. The test results showed that CrN coated SUS316L with multilayer structure had excellent corrosion resistance compared to single layer structures and single cell performance results with $25\;cm^2$ in effective area also showed the same tendency. The difference of the electrochemical properties between the single and multilayer samples was attributed to the Cr interlayer layer, which improved the corrosion resistance. Because the coating layer was damaged by pinholes, the Cr layer prevented the penetration of corrosive media into the substrate. Therefore, the CrN with a multilayer structure is an effective coating method to increase the corrosion resistance and to decrease the ICR for metallic bipolar plates in PEMFC.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the fashion shop display on the clothing purchase made by the sample of 369 adult women living in Seoul area. In this study, the interest and the effect of the display are investigated through such factors of demographic variables as each individual's age, educational career, vocation, average family income a month, and marriage status. And the relationship is also examined between the person's interest paid on the display and the clothing attitude related variables of fashion follow tendency, individuality, and the way of practical economy. An additional examinations are performed in the first reactive factor to be considered at the time of the clothing purchase, and the interrelation between the discontent after purchase and the effect of display before purchase. The major findings of this research, thus, can be summarized as following: 1. Demographic variables of women reflect differences in their interests toward display and accordingly the variety of the display effect as well. Less interest and effect are caused by the effort of display for the women in their senior age. However, a group of the character women and young college women pay relatively more attention to the display and give more effect to the purchase. The examination shows alsp that the unmarried and better-off and better-educated are more sensitive to the effect of the display. 2. The higher is the individuality and the fashion follow tendency, the stronger revealed the interest in the display, while the economic women have less interest in it. 3. The first factor considered at the time of purchase is not absolutely affected significantly by the degree of the display effect in real purchasing act. 4. The discontent after purchase is not related with how much the degree of display effects in the act of real purchase.

This work examines the dynamic properties of ice surfaces in vacuum for the temperature range of 140~180 K, which extends over the onset temperatures for ice sublimation and the phase transition from amorphous to crystallization ice. In particular, the study focuses on the transport processes of excess protons and chloride ions in ice and their segregative behavior to the ice surface. These phenomena were studied by conducting experiments with a relatively thick (~100 BL) ice film constructed with a bottom $H_2O$ layer and an upper $D_2O$ layer, with excess hydronium and chloride ions trapped at the $H_2O$/$D_2O$ interface as they were generated by the ionization of hydrogen chloride. The migration of protons, chloride ions, and water molecules to the ice film surface and their H/D exchange reactions were measured as a function of temperature using the methods of low energy sputtering (LES) and Cs+ reactive ion scattering (RIS). Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiments monitored the desorption of water and hydrogen chloride from the surface. Our observations indicated that both hydronium and chloride ions migrated from the interfacial layer to segregate to the surface at high temperature. Hydrogen chloride gas desorbs via recombination reaction of hydronium and chloride ions floating on the surface. Surface segregation of these species is driven by thermodynamic potential gradient present near the ice surface, whereas in the bulk, their transport is facilitated by thermal diffusion process. The finding suggests that chlorine activation reactions of hydrogen chloride for polar stratospheric ice particles occur at the surface of ice within a depth of at most a few molecular layers, rather than in the bulk phase.
