  • Explosive chemicals have been major soil and groundwater contaminants especially in the nations with active military activities. Of these explosives, 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) is the most refractory one due to its structural characteristics. Although its efficient reduction by Fe(0) is well-known, the reduction products - mainly aminotoluenes - still possess toxicities to terrestrial biota, and are resistant to biological degradation. In this study, therefore, abiotic transformation of TNT reduction products via oxidative-coupling reaction was evaluated using Mn oxide which is ubiquitous in natural soils. The transformation efficiency is increased with the number of amino groups. Considering the very efficient reduction rate of TNT by Fe(0), Mn oxide can be successfully used for the removal of TNT reduction products.

  • Proviral DNAs from HIV-1-infected CD4+ T cells (Molt/LAV cells) were amplified and detected in infected individual cells using polymerase chain reaction and in rifu hybridization. In this in situ PCR, three parameters were considered to achieve effective amplification and retention of amplificants inside the cells by making high molecular weight PCR products intracellularly, forming agarose matrix against the cells, and maintaining the appropriate PCR temperature profile. Over the cycles of ampliHcationl tailed primers with complementary overhanging sequences at their 5' sides manufactured high molecular weight products by using short primary products as a repeating unit. Agarose matrix could prevent the diffusion of the amplificants from the cells. Use of Thermanox coverslip inside the PCR tube offered target cells a similar temperature profile to that of conventional PCR in solution.

Effect of Fineness Modulus of Reactive Aggregate on Alkali Silica Reaction

  • In this study, the effects of the fineness modulus of reactive aggregate on ASR expansion and ASR products have been investigated. The reactive aggregate used was metamorphic aggregate originated from Korea. ASR tests were conducted according to accelerated mortar bar test. The morphology and chemical composition of products formed in mortar bars, 5 years after the mortar bar test had been performed, were studied by scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy. Test results indicated that ASR expansion of mortar bars decrease in linear proportion to the fineness modulus of reactive aggregate. SEM images indicated that mortar bars showed reactive products formed in cement paste, within air voids and within cracks through particles except for the mortar bar with the fineness modulus of 3.25. The EDS analysis of the reactive products showed presence of silica, calcium and sodium, typical of ASR product composition.

  • Using waste glass in concrete can cause crack and strength loss by the expansion of alkali-silica reaction(ASR). In this study, ASR expansion and properties of strength were analyzed in terms of clear waste glass grading, and by-products(fly ash, blast-furnace slag) and by-products content for reduction ASR expansion due to waste glass. In this accelerated ASTM C 1260 test of waste glass, pessimum grading can be found. Also, when the by-products are used with waste glass, there is an effect on reduction of expansion and strength loss due to ASR between the alkali in the cement paste and the silica in the waste glass.

  • Self propagating synthesis and thermal explosion of combustion reactions were applied to Al/K2Cr2O7/Al2O3 system as the first stage for a production of magnesia-chromium refractory. Several factors related to products made by two combustion reactions were considered and properties of products were characterised. Two processes were required to preheat upto at least 80$0^{\circ}C$ for the thermal explosion and the self propagating synthesis. These processes were so violent and explosive that alumina as diluent was added to the system in order to absorb the reaction heat and reduce the reaction rate. The products consisted of crystal phases of KAl5O8, Cr2O3, Al2O3, K2CrO4, and K2Al2O4.3H2O. The amount of KAl5O8 and K2Al2O4.3H2O crystal phases of products were decreased with further addition of alumina.

  • For metabolic study of pinusolide, a naturally occurring platelet activating factor antagonist, a synthetic method for preparation of radiolabeled pinusolide was studied.   • Polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins(PCDDs) have been prepared by microsacale pyrolysis of trichlorophenates. During the pyrolysis reaction, dechlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins were also formed by the thermolysis of PCDDs. The dechlorination pathways of PCDDs were suggested in this reaction. The identification of these products was performed using capillary column gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

  • Durability of LCD glass, OA-10 and OA-21, to $SiCl_4$ and $SF_6$ gases was investigated. Reaction products are generated on the glass surface. The reaction products are reduced by changing the etching conditions. the durability of OA-10 and OA-21 to the dry etching gases is comparable.

  • The activity of catalysts obtained by self-propagating high temperature synthesis in reaction of partial methane oxidation at atmospheric pressure was investigated. Basing on the compared results of X-ray analysis and gas chromatography analysis of reaction products, the dependence of compounds formation on the phase concentrations in the studied catalyst samples was found.
