European efforts to design superconducting conductors for a future tokamak have involved Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC). Nb3Sn coils which undergo heat treatment to activate the Nb3Sn material are mostly produced through the wind-then-react route. However, some Nb3Sn coils have been proposed with CICCs of the react-then-wind route. The latter CICCs are physically constrained due to handling limitations which if not adhered to will result in irrecoverable damage to the Nb3Sn cable inside, nullifying any performance advantage. A group at the Swiss Plasma Center has proposed such CICC designs, constructing samples and testing them for performance. The characteristics and performance of these react & wind (R&W) CICCs are compared with the more common wind & react (W&R) CICCs, and it is found that the R&W designs show more extreme characteristics than typical W&R Nb3Sn CICCs for some parameters that are known to influence CICC performance. Where the R&W CICCs extend the range of those parameters, they also continue trends formed by the W&R CICCs with the parameters. The main observation, however, is that although the current sharing temperature performances of the R&W samples are above the average of the W&R samples they were compared to, they are not the highest. A similar observation applies to a cost comparison of the superconducting material where the R&W CICCs are found to be relatively cheap but not the cheapest. Given these results, clear practical advantages to the R&W CICC design is not evident.
High wind penetration might cause the frequency stability problem because a wind power plant (WPP) is operating in a maximum power tracking mode to extract the maximal energy from wind and thus does not react to the system frequency variation. Therefore, the system operators encourage a WPP to participate in frequency control, which includes inertia/orl and primary control. The frequency support capability of a WPP depends on the amount of kinetic energy (KE) and reserve. This paper formulates an optimization problem to maximize KE while retaining the required reserve. The proposed optimization problem would allow wind generators (WGs) with a smaller wind speed to retaine more KE. The performance of the proposed optimization problem was investigated in a 100-MW WPP consisting of 20 units of 5-MW permanent magnet synchronous generators using an EMTP-RV simulator. The results show that the proposed optimization problem successfully improves the frequency nadir more than a conventional reserve allocation that distributes WGs proportional to the current output.
This study proposed a wind power generation system utilizing outdoor air on the rooftop and indoor ventilation, which would increase according to the building height, as a way to help to save energy consumption in a building by using wind power energy of the new renewable energy sources. The study measured the distribution of air currents and power generation according to the usage factor of exhaust pipes in the kitchen and bathroom and identified the elements to consider when applying a wind power generation system to buildings in order to use outdoor air on the rooftop increasing according to the height and the indoor ventilation produced in the facility vertical shafts inside the buildings by installing a wind power generation system on the rooftop. (1) The study measured the ventilation velocity of the kitchen hood and bathroom ventilation fan by changing the zone areas by the households according to the usage factor of [${\alpha}$]=33~100%. As a result, the kitchen ventilation pipe generated the ventilation wind of 3.0m/s or more at the usage factor of [${\alpha}$] 66% or higher, and the bathroom ventilation pipe generated ventilation velocity lower than 3.0m/s, the blade velocity of the wind power generator, even after the usage factor rose to [${\alpha}$]=100%. (2) As the old bathroom ventilation pipe generated the ventilation velocity of 3.0m/s, the blade velocity of the wind power generator, even with the rising usage factor [${\alpha}$], the application of an outdoor air induction module increased the ventilation velocity by 2.9m/s at the usage factor of [${\alpha}$]=33%, 3.8m/s at the usage factor of [${\alpha}$]=66%, and 3.6m/s at the usage factor of [${\alpha}$]=100%. Thus the ventilation velocity of 3.0m/s, the blade velocity of the wind power generator, or higher was secured. (3) The findings prove that the applicability of a wind power generation system using outdoor air on the rooftop and indoor ventilation is excellent, which raises a need for various efforts to increase the possibility of its commercialization such as securing its structural stability according to momentary gusts on the rooftop and typhoons in summer and making the structure light to react to the wind directions of outdoor air on the rooftop according to the seasons.
The classical two-degree-of-freedom (2-d-o-f) "sectional model" is of common use to study the dynamics of suspension bridges. It takes into account the first pair of vertical and torsional modes of the bridge and describes well global oscillations caused by wind actions on the deck, yielding very useful information on the overall behaviour and the aerodynamic and aeroelastic response; however, it does not consider relative oscillations between main cables and deck. On the contrary, the 4-d-o-f model described in the two Parts of this paper includes longitudinal deformability of the hangers (assumed linear elastic in tension and unable to react in compression) and thus allows to take into account not only global oscillations, but also relative oscillations between main cables and deck. In particular, when the hangers go slack, large nonlinear oscillations are possible; if the hangers remain taut, the oscillations remain small and essentially linear: the latter behaviour has been the specific object of Part I (Sepe and Augusti 2001), while the present Part II investigates the nonlinear behaviour (coexisting large and/or small amplitude oscillations) under harmonic actions on the cables and/or on the deck, such as might be generated by vortex shedding. Because of the discontinuities and strong nonlinearity of the governing equations, the response has been investigated numerically. The results obtained for sample values of mechanical and forcing parameters seems to confirm that relative oscillations cannot a priori be excluded for very long span bridges under wind-induced loads, and they can stimulate a discussion on the actual possibility of such phenomena.
The classical two-degree-of-freedom (2-d-o-f) "sectional model" is currently used to study the dynamics of suspension bridges. Taking into account the first pair of vertical and torsional modes of the bridge, it describes well global oscillations caused by wind actions on the deck and yields very useful information on the overall behaviour and the aerodynamic and aeroelastic response, but does not consider relative oscillation between main cables and deck. The possibility of taking into account these relative oscillations, that can become significant for very long span bridges, is the main purpose of the 4-d-o-f model, proposed by the Authors in previous papers and fully developed here. Longitudinal deformability of the hangers (assumed linear elastic in tension and unable to react in compression) and external loading on the cables are taken into account: thus not only global oscillations, but also relative oscillations between cables and deck can be described. When the hangers go slack, large nonlinear oscillations are possible; if the hangers remain taut, the oscillations are small and essentially linear. This paper describes the model proposed for small and large oscillations, and investigates in detail the limit condition for linear response under harmonic actions on the cables (e.g., like those that could be generated by vortex shedding). These results are sufficient to state that, with geometric and mechanical parameters in a range corresponding to realistic cases of large span suspension bridges, large relative oscillations between main cables and deck cannot be excluded, and therefore should not be neglected in the design. Forthcoming papers will investigate more general cases of loading and dynamic response of the model.

Atmospheric $O_3$ in the biosphere is formed under the favourable meteorological condition, when the primary pollutants, such as $NO_2, HC, CO, CH_4$, etc., react with over constituents. Observed annual average concentrations for 1989 and 1990 were 11.8 and 10.4 ppb, respectively. THe number of days measured ozone over 80 ppb in Seoul were 36 in 1989 and 39 in 1990. In general, monthly maximum values occurred in May and August. In comparison with 1 $\sim$ 2 maxima of $O_3$ distribution in large cities in other countries, it was found that there were 3 $\sim$ 4 maxima in Seoul and its suburbs. Topographic effects, resulted by wind channelling in the Han River valley and by the blocking of air pollutants in the mountain, appeared to produce multiple centres of $O_3$ maxima in Seoul. Surface $O_3$ values were low with decreasing solar radiation, when the cloudiness increased and precipitation occurred. According to 12 cases examined, 2 cases shown here, $O_3$ values exceeding 80 ppb were occurred when the Korean peninsular was under the influence of the backside airflows with high intensity of solar radiation. Occasionally, sea breezes were observed to occur in warm seasons, and the chanelling effect of the Han River valley appeared to increase the general wind (speed) to the east side of Seoul. In this meso-scale situation $O_3$ in downwind is highly correlated with precursors. The sea breeze of 2 $\sim$ 4 m $s^{-1}$ will take 3 $\sim$ 5 hours to transport photochemical precursors for 20 $\sim$ 50 km. In turn the areas of maximum $O_3$ occurrence in Seoul are in the range of meso-scale transport of air pollutants.
A superconducting motor consisting of high temperature superconducting (HTS) rotor and air-core stator is under development in Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute. HTS motor was designed for having the rated power of 100hp at 1800 rpm. HTS field winding is composed of sixteen HTS race track shaped coils wound with stainless steel-reinforced Bi-2223 tape conductor by react and wind fabrication method. Nomex Paper was used for electrical insulation. Each of four magnet pole assemblies was constructed with four double pancake sub-coils, mechanically stacked and electrically in series. Four magnet assemblies were fixed on an aluminum support structure to make effective heat transfer. Critical current (Ic) of HTS field winding was 41A but minimum Ic of sub-coils was 35A at 77K and self field. Joule heat generated in HTS field winding was 2.11W at 77K and 35A.

To develop a 100 hp high temperature superconducting(HTS) motor with high efficiency first in Korea, we fabricated a HTS field winding and test. The Critical current (Ic) was 41.5A at 77K and self field. However the lowest Ic value of sub-coils was 35A. Joule heat generated by each joints between sub-coils was lower than 1mW at 77K and 34A. And Joule heat generated by the joints between field coils was lower than 10mW at 77K and 34A. Joule heat of the whole field winding was 1W at 77K and 32A. And so, the lowest Ic value of sub-coils was more important than Joule heats generated by all joints. The operating current must be lower than the lowest Ic of all the sub-coils. In this paper, design, construction and testing of HTS field winding, Joule heat generated by the joints, and operating current were discussed.
This dissertation aims to investigate the structure of Palsangjeon, a five story wooden pagoda in Pubjoo Temple which is the only wooden pagoda existing in Korea, by a comparative study of the Palsangjeon with Japanese counterparts. By doing so, the writer of the present investigation attempts to find out its structural originality. The main finding of this study are as follows. The upper part of Palsangjeon is constructed with square log frameworks called GuiTl and Sacheon-Ju around the central column. The four walls along Sacheon-Ju from the 1st level to the 3rd well resists the outside horizontal piressure. And Gui-Tl structure on the 5th level copes much better with shear force. So this frame consisting of Sacheon-Ju and log frameworks might be viewed an semi-core system, This core is supported once again by the frame of Go-Ju. That is to say. Go-Ju supports frame of Sacheon-Ju. And the frame of Pyeong-Ju on the 4th and the 5th levels also supports it. The frame of Go-Ju is supported by the frame of Pyeong-Ju on the 1st and the 2nd levels. So this structure is designed to resist the wind and also keep the balance by properly distributing vertical pressure. The plan and the elevational structure of Palsangjeon keep the balance by the perfect symmetric structure. And the frame of Sacheon-Ju forming semi-core system can resist both the lateral load and the vertical pressure for the balance of its structure. The five story pagoda in Horyuji used to stand on a central which is desigend to support the main body of the pagoda from the first level. The principles of balance is used between the Ha-Aag and short to react the rafter. Sacheon-Ju and edge column is against the lateral load. The structural jointing system is stable thanks to the log framewroks formed on every level. The five story pagoda in Horyuji poseses the structual system originated from the ancient wooden pagoda. The pagoda is found to express simple, sincere and straight forward form. On the other hand, it could be seen as a stucture resisting the earthquake and the lateral load, Palsangjeon is an excellent building which religions function is well harmonized with its structure and appearance. It not only functions extremely well as a regions place like other pagodas, but also excellently shows how multi-story wooden building should be structured.
