  • Ray cells with perforations are recorded for the first time in the Korean Celastraceae species of Euonymus sieboldiana and Tripterygium regelii and the Oleaceae species of Abeliophyllum distichum, Forsythia ovata, Ligustrum japonicum, and Osmanthus heterophylla, All these anomalous ray cells have simple perforations, and the vessel elements of all these species have simple perforation plates, Thus, in the Korean Celastraceae and Oleaceae, the perforations of ray cells appear to be identical with the types of perforation plates in the vessel elements of the same wood, The diagnostic value of the perforated ray cells is also discussed.

  • The sensitivities of Chlorella ellipsoidea to ${\gamma}$-ray from Cobalt-60 were determined by measuring the photosynthetic and respiratory activities and the changes in phosphate contents in various fractions of the irradited cells, which were further grown in a standard medium after irradiation, were compared to those of non-irradiated normal cells. The photosynthetic and repiratory activities of the cells were almost inversely proportional to the dose of ${\gamma}$-ray irradiated and the photosynthetic activity was more sensitive than the respiratory activity of the cells. The most sensitive to ${\gamma}$-ray was growth activity, followed by photosynthesis, exogenous and endogenous respirations of the cells in decreasing order. Chlorella cells were so resistant to ${\gamma}$-ray comapred with other organisms that about 280,000 r dose of ${\gamma}$-ray irradiaton was necessary to reduce as much as half the subsequent photosynthetic activity. When the irradiated algae were further cultured in a standard medium, the phosphate contents in the fraction of DNA, RNA and phosphoprotein decreased considerably compared with those of non-irradiated normal cells, while the phosphate contents in the fraction of polyphosphates increased than those of control. Therefore, it was deduced that ${\gamma}$-ray inhibited the synthesis of DNA from polyphosphates, that the growth of Chlorella cells were consequently retarded.

  • Perforated ray cells are identified for the first time in the Korean species of Deutzia glabrata, Deutzia sieboldiana, Hydrangea paniculata, and Philadelphus schrenckii that belong to Hydrangeaceae but not observed in Deutzia gracilis. These ray cells have simple to scalarifrom perforations in Deutzia glabrata which have vessel elements with scalariform perforations, and have scalariform to reticulate perforations in Deutzia sieboldiana, Hydrangea paniculata, and Philadelphus schrenckii which have vessel elements with scalariform perforations. Thus, the perforations of ray cells in Korean Hydrangeaceae appeared not to be exactly the same as the types of scalariform perforation plates in the vessel elements of same wood.

  • Anatomical comparison of 8 North American species of Abies was executed to provide taxonomic information. The species of eastern (balsam and Fraser fir) and western (Pacific silver, white, grand, subalpine, California red, and noble fir) were found to be separated on the basis of crystals and color of contents in ray parenchyma cells and ray height. In eastern species, crystals in ray parenchyma cells were absent and ray parenchyma cell contents were colorless to very light. These two eastern species were further characterized by the absence of uniseriate rays exceeding 25 cells in height. In western species, only subalpine fir had colorless to very light contents but the remaining five species have dark contents in ray parenchyma cells. Crystals were absent to extremely sparse in Pacific silver fir, somewhat frequent in noble fir, frequent in grand and California red fir, and very frequent in white fir. Uniseriate rays exceeding 25 cells in height were regularly found in grand and California red fir but absent in white and noble fir.

  • Ionizing radiation, including that evoked by gamma (${\gamma}$)-rays, induces oxidative stress through the generation of reactive oxygen species, resulting in apoptosis, or programmed cell death. This study aimed to elucidate the radioprotective effects of hyperoside (quercetin-3-O-galactoside) against ${\gamma}$-ray radiation-induced apoptosis in Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts, V79-4 and demonstrated that the compound reduced levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species in ${\gamma}$-ray-irradiated cells. Hyperoside also protected irradiated cells against DNA damage (evidenced by pronounced DNA tails and elevated phospho-histone H2AX and 8-oxoguanine content) and membrane lipid peroxidation. Furthermore, hyperoside prevented the ${\gamma}$-ray-provoked reduction in cell viability via the inhibition of apoptosis through the increased levels of Bcl-2, the decreased levels of Bax and cytosolic cytochrome c, and the decrease of the active caspase 9 and caspase 3 expression. Taken together, these results suggest that hyperoside defend cells against ${\gamma}$-ray radiation-induced apoptosis by inhibiting oxidative stress.

  • Cultured pancreatic beta cells and nerve cells, it is given normal condition of 10% FBS (fetal bovine serum), 11.1 mM glucose and hyperglycemia codition of 1% FBS, 30 mM glucose. For low LET X-ray irradiated with 0.5 Gy/hr dose-rate(total dose: 0.5 to 5 Gy). Survival rates were measured by MTT assay. When non irradiated, differentiated in the pancreatic beta cells experiment is hyperglycemia conditions survival rate compared to normal conditions survival rate seemed a small reduction. However increasing the total dose of X-ray, the survival rate of normal conditions decreased slightly compared to the survival rate of hyperglycemia conditions, the synergistic effect was drastically reduced. When non irradiated, undifferentiated in the nerve cells experiment is hyperglycemia conditions survival rate compared to normal conditions survival rate seemed a large reduction. As the cumulative dose of X-ray normal conditions and hyperglycemia were all relatively rapid cell death. But the rate of decreased survivals by almost parallel to the reduction proceed and it didn't show synergistic effect.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Angelica gigas on jejunal survival, endogenous spleen colony formation and jejunal crypt cells of mice irradiated with Gamma-ray irradiation. The subject of this study includes 42 mice which were divided into each 7 groups. Angelica gigas experiment groups were Angelica gigas + Gamma-ray(10Gy), Angelica gigas + Gamma-ray(3Gy), Angelica gigas. Gamma-ray(1 Gy), Gamma-ray control (10Gy), Gamma-ray control(3Gy), Gamma-ray control(1Gy), Normal groups. In the present study to evaluate the effect of Angelica gigas on jejunal crypt survival, endogenous spleen colony formation, and apoptosis in jejunal crypt cells of mice Gamma-ray with each dose of Gamma-ray irradiation. The results of this study were as follows: In low-dose(1Gy) Gamma-ray radiation were treatment of Angelica gigas showed significantly increased(p<0.05) on the cell death apoptosis in crypt, intestine crypts survival of intestine after gamma-ray irradiation. High-dose(10Gy) Gamma-ray, treatment of Angelica gigas showed significantly increased(p<0.05) on the leukocyte. The above results suggest that Angelica gigas were immunostimulating effectively reduced Gamma-ray irradiation.

  • The wood anatomy of Mangifera indica belonging to the species of Anacardiaceae native to Bangladesh was described. The species of this family was distinctive in having growth rings, thin-to thick-walled, nonseptate libriform fibres, vessels with simple perforation plate and nonvestures intervessel pittings. Paratracheal axial parenchyma was vasicentric, lozenge-aliform and confluent. Axial parenchyma band more than 3 cells wide and in marginal or in seemingly marginal bands. 3-4 cells per axial parenchyma was dominantly present. Ray height was less than 1mm. Body ray cells were procumbent with one row of upright and square marginal cells. More than one prismatic crystals of about the same size was present in upright or square ray cells.
