In the scalable video coding standard, inter-layer prediction based on the coding information of the base layer was adopted to increase the coding performance. This prediction tool results in new syntax elements called motion_prediction_flag (mPF) and residul_prediction_flag(rPF), which are carried to notify the motion vector predictor (MVP) and reference block required in the motion compensation of the decoder. In this paper, an efficient coding method for mPF is proposed to enhance coding efficiency of the salable video coding standard. Through an analysis on the transmission of mPF based on the relationship between the MVPs, we discover the conditions where mPF is unnecessary at the decoder and suggest a modified rate-distortion (RD) cost function to make RD optimization more effective. Simulation results show that the proposed method offers BD rate savings of approximately 1.4%, compared with the conventional SVC standard.
The latest video coding standard, high efficiency video coding (HEVC) achieves high coding efficiency by employing a quadtree-based coding unit (CU) block partitioning structure which allows recursive splitting into four equally sized blocks. At each depth level, each CU is partitioned into variable sized blocks of prediction units (PUs). However, the determination of the best CU partition for each coding tree unit (CTU) and the best PU mode for each CU causes a dramatic increase in computational complexity. To reduce such computational complexity, we propose a fast PU decision algorithm that early terminates PU search. The proposed method skips the computation of R-D cost for certain PU modes in the current CU based on the best mode and the rate-distortion (RD) cost of the upper depth CU. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces the computational complexity of HM12.0 to 18.1% with only 0.2% increases in BD-rate.

In this paper, we propose macroblock(MB)-based adaptive interpolation filter method for improving coding efficiency in H.264/AVC. In the proposed method, nine separable two-dimensional(2D) interpolation filters are applied for precisely compensating motions in various directions. The optimal cost function which considers the bit rate and distortion for coding the MB is defined. The filter is adaptively selected per MB for minimizing the defined cost function. In the experimental results, the proposed method shows more excellent in coding efficiency than the conventional methods for the various standard $QCIF(176{\times}144)/CIF(352{\times}288)$ video test sequences. It leads to about 6.25%(1 reference frame) and 3.46%(5 reference frames) bit rate reduction on average compared to the H.264/AVC.

In this paper, we propose the method that reduce computational complexity for intermode decision using CBP(coded block pattern) and coded information of colocated-MB(macro block). Proposed method classifies MB into best-CBP and normal-CBP according to the characteristics of CBP. On best-CBP, it eliminates the computation for $8{\times}8$ mode on intermode decision process because the probability for SKIP mode and M-Type mode is 96.3% statistically. On normal-CBP, it selectively eliminates the amount of computation for bit-rate distortion cost, because it uses coded information of colocated-MB and motion vector cost in deciding SKIP mode and M-Type mode. The simulation results show that the proposed method reduces total coding time to 58.44% in average, and is effective in reducing computational burden in videos with little motion.
This paper suggested a theoretical model, in which a security-based(secured loan, non-secured loan) credit agreement determines the form of corporate cost function through a loaning company's cost minimization in the light of a company which behaves monopolistically in product markets. Also, this paper analyzed the influence of a corporate credit agreement on market equilibrium, and economic welfare in product markets. As a result, it was found that in case a company, whose equity capital is small, implements borrowing based on a secured loan from a financial institution, the company comes to face borrowing restraints, in which the company has no choice but to get a loan within the scope of securities. When a company offers its capital goods, i.e. a production factor, as a security, there occurs a distortion to the production factor input ratio. Meanwhile, when a company comes to get a loan based on an unsecured loan, for which the interest rate is high, marginal cost rises; accordingly, the company comes to choose a credit agreement aiming at maximizing its profits. However, a company's choice of a credit agreement is not quite desirable from a consumer's viewpoint, and from the whole economic point of view; overall, such a choice is likely to aggravate economic welfare.

ITL (information-theoretic learning) has been applied successfully to adaptive signal processing and machine learning applications, but there are difficulties in deciding the kernel size, which has a great impact on the system performance. The correntropy algorithm, one of the ITL methods, has superior properties of impulsive-noise robustness and channel-distortion compensation. On the other hand, it is also sensitive to the kernel sizes that can lead to system instability. In this paper, considering the sensitivity of the kernel size cubed in the denominator of the cost function slope, a new adaptive kernel estimation method using the rate of change in error power in respect to the kernel size variation is proposed for the correntropy algorithm. In a distortion-compensation experiment for impulsive-noise and multipath-distorted channel, the performance of the proposed kernel-adjusted correntropy algorithm was examined. The proposed method shows a two times faster convergence speed than the conventional algorithm with a fixed kernel size. In addition, the proposed algorithm converged appropriately for kernel sizes ranging from 2.0 to 6.0. Hence, the proposed method has a wide acceptable margin of initial kernel sizes.
HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) achieves high coding efficiency by employing a quadtree-based coding unit (CU) block partitioning structure and various prediction units (PUs), and the determination of the best CU partition structure and the best PU mode based on rate-distortion (R-D) cost. However, the computation complexity of encoding also dramatically increases. In this paper, to reduce such encoding computational complexity, we propose three fast PU mode decision methods based on encoding information of upper depth as follows. In the first method, the search of PU mode of the current CU is early terminated based on the sub-CBF (Coded Block Flag) of upper depth. In the second method, the search of intra prediction modes of PU in the current CU is skipped based on the sub-Intra R-D cost of upper depth. In the last method, the search of intra prediction modes of PU in the lower depth's CUs is skipped based on the sub-CBF of the current depth's CU. Experimental results show that the three proposed methods reduce the computational complexity of HM 14.0 to 31.4%, 2.5%, and 23.4% with BD-rate increase of 1.2%, 0.11%, and 0.9%, respectively. The three methods can be applied in a combined way to be applied to both of inter prediction and intra prediction, which results in the complexity reduction of 34.2% with 1.9% BD-rate increase.
The progress of data transmission technology through the Internet has spread a variety of realistic contents. One of such contents is multi-view video that is acquired from multiple camera sensors. In general, the multi-view video processing requires encoders and decoders as many as the number of cameras, and thus the processing complexity results in difficulties of practical implementation. To solve for this problem, this paper considers a simple multi-view system utilizing a single encoder and a single decoder. In the encoder side, input multi-view YUV sequences are combined on GOP units by a video mixer. Then, the mixed sequence is compressed by a single H.264/AVC encoder. The decoding is composed of a single decoder and a scheduler controling the decoding process. The goal of the scheduler is to assign approximately identical number of decoded frames to each view sequence by estimating the decoder utilization of a Gap and subsequently applying frame skip algorithms. Furthermore, in the frame skip, efficient frame selection algorithms are studied for H.264/AVC baseline and main profiles based upon a cost function that is related to perceived video quality. Our proposed method has been performed on various multi-view test sequences adopted by MPEG 3DAV. Experimental results show that approximately identical decoder utilization is achieved for each view sequence so that each view sequence is fairly displayed. As well, the performance of the proposed method is examined in terms of bit-rate and PSNR using a rate-distortion curve.
Scalable extension of High Efficiency Video Coding (SHVC) standard uses the up-sampled residual data from the base layer to make a residual data in the enhancement layer. This paper describes an efficient algorithm for improving coding gain by using the filtered residual signal of base layer in the Scalable extension of High Efficiency Video Coding (SHVC). The proposed adaptive filter selection mechanism uses the smoothing and sharpening filters to enhance the quality of inter-layer prediction. Based on two filters and the existing up-sampling filter, a rate-distortion (RD)-cost fuction-based competitive scheme is proposed to get better quality of video. Experimental results showed that average BD-rate gains of 1.5%, 2.1%, and 1.7% for Y, U and V components, respectively, were achieved, compared with SHVC reference software 5.0, which is based on HEVC reference model (HM) 13.

The emerging video coding standard High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) has shown almost 40% bit-rate reduction over the state-of-the-art Advanced Video Coding (AVC) standard but at about 40% computational complexity overhead. The main reason for HEVC computational complexity is the inter prediction that accounts for 60%-70% of the whole encoding time. In this paper, we propose several fast coding unit (CU) encoding schemes based on the Merge mode and motion estimation information to reduce the computational complexity caused by the HEVC inter prediction. Firstly, an early Merge mode decision method based on motion estimation (EMD) is proposed for each CU size. Then, a Merge mode based early termination method (MET) is developed to determine the CU size at an early stage. To provide a better balance between computational complexity and coding efficiency, several fast CU encoding schemes are surveyed according to the rate-distortion-complexity characteristics of EMD and MET methods as a function of CU sizes. These fast CU encoding schemes can be seamlessly incorporated in the existing control structures of the HEVC encoder without limiting its potential parallelization and hardware acceleration. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed schemes achieve 19%-46% computational complexity reduction over the HEVC test model reference software, HM 16.4, at a cost of 0.2%-2.4% bit-rate increases under the random access coding configuration. The respective values under the low-delay B coding configuration are 17%-43% and 0.1%-1.2%.
