Time effect on the deformation and strength characteristics of geogrid reinforced sand retaining wall has become an important issue in geotechnical and transportation engineering. Three physical model tests on geogrid reinforced sand retaining walls performed under various loading conditions were simulated to study their rate-dependent behaviors, using the presented nonlinear finite element method (FEM) analysis procedure. This FEM was based on the dynamic relaxation method and return mapping scheme, in which the combined effects of the rate-dependent behaviors of both the backfill soil and the geosynthetic reinforcement have been included. The rate-dependent behaviors of sands and geogrids should be attributed to the viscous property of materials, which can be described by the unified three-component elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model. By comparing the FEM simulations and the test results, it can be found that the present FEM was able to be successfully extended to the boundary value problems of geosynthetic reinforced soil retaining walls. The deformation and strength characteristics of the geogrid reinforced sand retaining walls can be well reproduced. Loading rate effect, the trends of jump in footing pressure upon the step-changes in the loading rate, occurred not only on sands and geogrids but also on geogrid reinforced sands retaining walls. The lateral earth pressure distributions against the back of retaining wall, the local tensile force in the geogrid arranged in the retaining wall and the local stresses beneath the footing under various loading conditions can also be predicted well in the FEM simulations.
The behavior of surface film formation was greatly dependent on the speed of potential cycling. In $LiClO_4$ / EC + DEC, cyclic voltammetry results showed that the peaks originated from surface film formation on graphite electrode at the high charge-discharge rate was shifted to the lower potentials as the charge-discharge rate decrease. This indicates that surface films with different morphology and thickness were formed by different charge-discharge rate. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results indicated that the properties such as thickness and morphology of the surface film were greatly affected by the charge-discharge rate. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed that the resistance of surface film was affected by the speed of potential cycling. In addition, the charge transfer resistance was also dependent on the charge-discharge rate indicating that the charge transfer reaction was affected by the nature of surface film. TEM and EIS results suggested that the chemical property as well as the physical property of the surface film was affected by the charge-discharge rate.
Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) process at room temperature has been newly proposed in recent years to overcome the shape accuracy and sticking problem induced in a conventional NIL process. Success of the room temperature NIL relies on the accurate understand of the mechanical behavior of the polymer. Since a conventional NIL process has to heat a polymer above the glass transition temperature to deform the physical shape of the polymer with a mold pattern, viscoelastic property of polymer have major effect on the NIL process. However, rate dependent behavior of polymer is important in the room temperature NIL process because a mold with engraved patterns is rapidly pressed onto a substrate coated with the polymer by the hydraulic equipment. In this paper, finite element analysis of the room temperature NIL process is performed with considering the strain rate dependent behavior of the polymer. The analyses with the variation of imprinting speed and imprinting pattern are carried out in order to investigate the effect of such process parameters on the room temperature NIL process. The analyses results show that the deformed shape and imprint force is quite different with the variation of punch speed because the dynamic behavior of the polymer is considered with the rate dependent plasticity model. The results provide a guideline for the determination of process conditions in the room temperature NIL process.
In precision chemical application increment of biological efficacy with less chemical is the virtue. spraying rate and droplet size is closely related to biological efficacy. this study was performed to develope a spray-control-system that could control spraying rate and droplet size independently. Twin-fluid nozzles were selected and tested to certify if the nozzles were suitable for the objective of this study. Characteritics of the nozzles i.e., spraying rte and droplet size change u8nder the changes of spraying pressure and air pressure were statistically modeled. The model had I to 1 matching property between dependent variables and independent variables. Using the property and the model, inverse relationship could be determined between variables. A feedback spray control system was developed and tested with predetermined error of 5 % in pressure. The system showed 4 % error in spraying rate and 9 % error in droplets size. Performance of the system could be upgraded by fine tuning but, in practical sense keeping air pressure in the field sprayer was the bottle neck of commercialization of the spray system.
In order to predict failure behavior of advanced high-strength steel sheets (AHSS) in hole expansion tests, damage model was developed considering surface condition sensitivity (with specimens prepared by milling and punching: 340R, TRIP590, TWIP940). To account for the micro-damage initiation and evolution as well as macro-crack formation, the stress triaxiality dependent fracture criterion and rate-dependent hardening and ultimate softening behavior were characterized by performing numerical simulations and experiments for the simple tension and V-notch tests. The developed damage model and the characterized mechanical property were incorporated into the FE program ABAQUS/Explicit to perform hole expansion simulations, which showed good agreement with experiments.

In this paper, we examine the behavior of the High-Rate Brittle Microplane (HRBM) concrete model based on a series of penetration experiments. These experiments were conducted with three different slab thicknesses (127, 216 and 254 mm) that provided a significant challenge for the numerical simulations. The 127 mm slab provided little resistance, the 216 mm slab provided nominal resistance and the 254 mm slab approached the perforation limit thickness of the projectile. These experiments provide a good baseline for evaluating material models since they have been shown to be extremely challenging; in fact, we have not encountered many material models that can provide quantitatively predictive results in terms of both projectile exit velocity and material damage. In a companion paper, we described the HRBM material model and its fit to various quasi-static material property data for WES-5000 concrete. In this paper, we show that, when adequately fit to these quasi-static data, the HRBM model does not have significant predictive capabilities, even though the quasi-static material fit may be exceptional. This was attributed to the rate-dependent response of the material. After various rate effects were introduced into the HRBM model, the quantitative predictive nature of the calculations dramatically increased. Unfortunately, not much rate-dependent material property data are in the literature; hence, accurate incorporation of rate effects into material models is difficult. Nonetheless, it seems that rate effects may be critical in obtaining an accurate response for concrete during projectile perforation events.
Quantization in video coding plays an important role in controlling the bit-rate of compressed video bit-streams. It has been used as an important control means to adjust the amount of bit-streams to at]owed bandwidth of delivery networks and storage. Due to the dependent nature of video coding, dependent quantization has been proposed and applied for MPEG-2 video coding to better maintain the quality of reconstructed frame for given constraints of target bit-rate. Since Scalable Video Coding (SVC) being currently standardized exhibits highly dependent coding nature not only between frames but also lower and higher scalability layers where the dependent quantization can be effectively applied, in this paper, we propose a dependent quantization scheme for SVC and compare its performance in visual qualities and bit-rates with the current JSVM reference software for SVC. The proposed technique exploits the frame dependences within each GOP of SVC scalability layers to formulate dependent quantization. We utilize Lagrange optimization, which is widely accepted in R-D (rate-distortion) based optimization, and construct trellis graph to find the optimal cost path in the trellis by minimizing the R-D cost. The optimal cost path in the trellis graph is the optimal set of quantization parameters (QP) for frames within a GOP. In order to reduce the complexity, we employ pruning procedure using monotonicity property in the trellis optimization and cut the frame dependency into one GOP to decrease dependency depth. The optimal Lagrange multiplier that is used for SVC is equal to H.264/AVC which is also used in the mode prediction of the JSVM reference software. The experimental result shows that the dependent quantization outperforms the current JSVM reference software encoder which actually takes a linear increasing QP in temporal scalability layers. The superiority of the dependent quantization is achieved up to 1.25 dB increment in PSNR values and 20% bits saving for the enhancement layer of SVC.
The oxide film of silicon wafer has been mainly polished by fumed silica, colloidal silica or ceria slurry. Because colloidal silica slurry is uniform and highly dispersed composed of spherical shape particles, by which the oxide film polished remains to be less scratched in finishing polishing process. Even though the uniformity and spherical shape is advantage for reducing the scratch, it may also be the factor to decrease the removal rate. We have studied the correlation of silica abrasive particles and CMP characteristics by varying pH, down force, and table rotation rate in polishing. It was found that the CMP polishing is dependent on the morphology, aggregation, and the surface property of the silica particles.
Time-dependent flow properties of commercial kochujang (hot pepper-soybean paste) were evaluated at various shear rates (5, 15, 25, and $35\;sec^{-1}$) and temperatures (5, 15, and $25^{\circ}C$). Flow properties of all samples showed thixotropic behaviors, which were qualitatively evaluated and quantitatively described by the Weltman, Hahn, and Figoni and Shoemaker models. Time-dependent flow properties of kochujang were found to vary over the range of the shear rate and temperature investigated. Time-dependent models of Weltman and Hahn were suitable ($R^2=0.923-0.987$) for commercial kochujang.

Many materials including cementitious concrete-type materials undergo material property changes during high-rate loading. There is a wealth of research regarding this phenomenon for concrete in compression and tension. However, there is minimal knowledge about how mortar material used in concrete masonry unit (CMU) construction behaves in high-rate shear loading. A series of experiments was conducted to examine the bond strength of mortar bonded to CMU units under high-rate shear loading. A novel experimental setup using a shock tube and dynamic ram were used to load specially constructed shear triplets in a double lap shear configuration with no pre-compression. The Finite Element Method was leveraged in conjunction with data from the experimental investigation to establish if the shear bond between concrete masonry units and mortar exhibits any rate dependency. An increase in shear bond strength was observed when loaded at a high strain rate. This data indicates that the CMU-mortar bond exhibits a rate dependent strength change and illustrates the need for further study of the CMU-mortar interface characteristics at high strain rates.
