대암산 용늪지역의 버섯류 종 다양성 연구 (Studies on the Biodiversity of the Higher Fungi from the Yongnup Swamp Land)

  • Author has carried out to survey on the fungal diversity from Yongnup swamp land, Yanggu-gun, Kangwon-do during the fruiting season over five years. During this survey 45 species and 3 varieties were recorded. Among them, Hygrocybe turunda (Peck) Bon var. sphagnophila (Peck) Bon was confirmed as an unknown species and Hygrocybe cruenta (Hongo) Hongo, Hydropus floccipes (Fr.) Sing. and Rhodophyllus setuliforme Kim Y. S. & Seok, S. J. were also found as rare species in Korea based on the examination of sporocarps and through previous literatures. Additional three species and two variety in Myxomycota, Hemitricha serpular (Scop.) Rostaf., H. clavata var. calyculata (Speg.) Y. Yamam, Badhamia affinis var. affinis Rostaf., Acyria cinerea (Bull.) Pers. and Metatricha vesparium (Batsch) Nann.-Bremk were also listed.

Isolation and Characterization of Three Zygomycetous Fungi in Korea: Backusella circina, Circinella muscae, and Mucor ramosissimus

  • While surveying undiscovered fungal taxa in Korea, three rare zygomycetous fungal strains, CNUFC-PTF2-1, CNUFC-TF3-1, and CNUFC-ESAF3-1, were isolated from soil, leaf, and freshwater samples, respectively. The strains were analyzed morphologically as well as phylogenetically based on the internal transcribed spacer region and 28S rDNA sequences. Sequence analysis of the two loci revealed that the isolates, CNUFC-PTF2-1, CNUFC-TF3-1, and CNUFC-ESAF3-1, were identified as Backusella circina, Circinella muscae, and Mucor ramosissimus, respectively. These species have not yet been previously described in Korea.

Infectious Myositis of the Jaw Presenting as Trismus of Unknown Origin

  • Infectious myositis, an infection of the skeletal muscles, is a rare condition and potentially life-threatening if not detected and treated in the early stages. This clinical entity may arise from various pathogens, such as bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses. A propagation of contiguous infection, penetrating trauma, vascular insufficiency, or hematogenous spreading of microorganisms can cause infectious myositis. Though several cases have been reported in large muscle groups in the lower extremities, there are only a few reports on infectious myositis of the masticatory muscles. We report three cases of infectious myositis presenting jaw pain and trismus. Unlike a common head and neck infection caused by the spreading of odontogenic origin, the early diagnosis of infectious myositis was difficult because no specific lesion suspected to be the infection source was observed in the physical examination and the plain radiographs. Advanced imaging modalities such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, and laboratory evaluation is useful for the early detection of infectious myositis.

세균성 감염으로 오인된 발가락의 헤르페스 손끝염: 증례 보고 (A Case of Herpetic Whitlow of Toe Misdiagnosed as Bacterial Infection: A Case Report)

  • Finger infections are a common problem often caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi. Similarly, toe infections can present with similar clinical symptoms. Prompt identification of the cause of an infection is crucial for preventing disease progression to a state necessitating immediate and appropriate medical or surgical intervention. Herpetic whitlow is characterized by erythema and painful, non-purulent vesicles and typically results from a herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2 finger infections. However, while herpes whitlow of a finger is common, cases involving a toe are rare. Consequently, a lack of experience of herpetic whitlow of the toe could lead to a misdiagnosis as a bacterial infection and potentially result in unnecessary surgical treatment. Herein, we present a case of herpetic whitlow affecting a great toe that was initially misdiagnosed as a bacterial infection and subsequently treated surgically.

Investigation of Ectomycorrhizal Fungal Colonization in Pinus thunbergii Seedlings at a Plantation Area in Gangneung, using Morphotyping and Sequencing the rDNA Internal Transcribed Spacer Region

  • The status of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal colonization in Pinus thunbergii seedlings was investigated 2 years after planting in an eastern coastal area of Korea. We established three $10{\times}10$ m plots at a P. thunbergii plantation in Gangneung and sampled lateral roots from 10 seedlings in each plot. ECMs were classified into morphological groups and the number of root tips of each morphotype was counted. In total, 8 ECM morphotypes were observed and fungal species that form each morphotype were identified by sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the nuclear rDNA. Suillus granulatus was the most abundant species (44.1-65.7% of relative abundance) in all plots, followed by Tomentella ellisii (14.0-37.8%) and unidentified fungus belonged to Atheliaceae (10.6-20.1%). These 3 fungal species accounted for almost all of the ECM abundance in each plot (94.9-99.8%). The remaining 5 fungal species were uncommon and rare. There was no clear difference in ECM fungal communities among plots. Community structure of ECM fungi in the young P. thunbergii plantation was simple and composed of fungal species that were also observed in mature coastal pine forests.

한국내 각지에서 채집된 산삼의 균근(菌根) 형태와 감염율 (The Rate and Morphology of Mycorrhizal Infection in the Wild Ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) Collected from Various Locations in Korea)

  • 국내에서 채집되는 산삼의 내생균근(Arbuscular Mycor-rhizal Fungi, hMF) 감염을 조사하기 위해 전국 각지에서 생산되는 산삼으로부터 뿌리시료를 채취하였다. 균근감염은 채취한 뿌리를 세척하고 곰팡이의 균사를 frypan blue로 염색하여 관찰하였다. 본 연구에서 산삼의 품질은 12인의 전문가로 구성된 한국산삼협회의 산삼감정단에 의해 감정되었.다. 감정 의뢰된 산삼의 품질은 다섯 가지,즉,천종(순수 자연산삼), 지종(야생 산삼의 씨앗을 자연 상태에 파종하여 생산), 인종(약간의 변경이 가해진 자연환경에 otf산삼의 씨앗이나 모종을 심어서 생산), 품질미달(연령이 10년 미만 또는 병, 상처발생 등),수입 산삼 등 이다. 감염된 균근의 형태는 vesicle이 드물고, 세포 내부에는 arbuscule 대신 hyphal coil이 발견되어 hE?F중에서 Paris-type로서 확인되었다. 본 연구대상 산삼의 평균 균근감염율은 58.3%였으며, 다섯품질 간의 감염율에 큰 차이가 없었다 가는 뿌리에서 채취한 시료를 관찰해본 결과 총길이의 18.7%가 균근에 감염되어 있었다. 경기지방과 해발 1,200m이하에서 채집한 산삼의 균근감염율이 각각 84.2%, 70%로 평균보다 높은 반면,경북지방에서 채집한 산삼의 균근감염율이 27.8%로 낮았다. 연령이 오래된 산삼의 균근감염율이 상대적으로 낮은 것으로 나타났다.

폐 Aspergillosis 15례 검토 (Pulmonary Aspergillosis: Review of 15 Cases)

  • Fungi of the genus Aspergillus are ubiquitous Saprophytes in nature. Many reports since the first report of human aspergillosis by Slayter[1847], have suggested that this is not a rare condition. Author have reviewed 15 cases of pulmonary aspergillosis obtained in Dept. of Thoracic Surgery, Busan University Hospital from 1966 through 1976, and taken literatural consideration. The results were obtained as follows. 1. Ages ranged from the first to sixth decades, with the majority [73.3%] in the third and fourth decades. The male to female ratio was two to one. Both upper lobes were predominantly involved [80%]. 2. Hemoptysis was the most common symptom and it was appeared in 66.6%. 3. Only 4 cases [26.7%] were take correct diagnosis before operation. Remained cases were difficult to be taken the correct diagnosis preoperatively because of lower discovery rate of aspergillus in application on immunological typical X-ray findings and non-specific symptoms of them. 4. Preoperatively, 8 cases [53.3%] were taken diagnosis as pulmonary tuberculosis. 5. Underlying diseases were present in 11 cases [73.3%] and 6 cases of them were pulmonary tuberculosis.

한국산 균식성 미기록종, 갈색가시거저리의 분류학적 검토와 숙주버섯 (First Record of the Fungivorous Tenebrionid, Bolitotrogus kurosonis Miyatake (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), from Korea with a New Host Fungus)

  • 버섯에서 서식하는 거저리류 가운데 갈색가시거저리(Bolitotrogus kurosonis Miyatake)를 국내에서 처음 보고한다. 갈색가시거저리는 균식성으로 활엽수림에 나는 민주름버섯류, 특히 시루뻔버섯속(Inonotus)의 황갈색시루뻔버섯[Inonotus mikadoi (Lloyd) Imaz.]에서 서식하는 것으로 관찰되었다. 본 종의 성충에 대한 기재문을 기술하였고, 본 종의 상위 분류군인 한국산 가시거저리족(Bolitophagini)에 대한 검색표를 작성하였다. 성충의 사진, 진단 형질과 숙주버섯에 대한 생태적 정보를 제공하였다.

균학자 김삼순 연구활동의 과학사적 접근 (Historical Studies on Scientific Research of Mycologist Sam Soon KIM)

  • Sam Soon KIM was a female scientist who pioneered mycology in South Korea. She not only created the Korean Society of Mycology and the Korean Journal of Mycology but also achieved extraordinary results in the studies of mycology. After returning from Kyushu University in Japan in 1966, she turned her attention to the applied research of microorganisms. Kim pursued an earnest exploration of the practical values of bacteria in addition to those of fungi and mushrooms. Then, with the founding of the Korean Society of Mycology in 1972, she emerged as the central figure in the rare academia of mycology. Particularly, mushroom research, which had been stagnant, became revitalized by the joining of researchers from the Rural Development Administration. Taking this as momentum, Kim moved beyond applied research, such as mushroom cultivation, and led the mushroom name unification plan from 1978. She also studied mushroom classification and eventually launched publishing an illustrated book of mushrooms. These fruits of her long-term research trajectory led her to be known as a mushroom expert.
