Dietary iodine intake and urinary iodide excretion were meassured from 110 patients with various thyroid hormone diseses(hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, simple goiter and thyroid adenoma) and 67 normal control subjects. Iodine intake was assessed on the 24-hour recall dietary data using the compiled lists of food iodine values developed from various countries. Urinary iodide concentrations of drink water samples were measured with the iodide-selective electrode. The average iodine intake of the thyroid patients was 411$\mu\textrm{g}$, which was 87% higher(p<0.05) than that of the control subjects(220$\mu\textrm{g}$). Patients with hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism or simple goiter excreted the most(0.6442ppm) amount of iodide respectively in the urine, with the control subject in the middle(0.5229ppm). Iodide concentrations of the drinking water samples were found to be in the range of 0.0015ppm to 0.0214ppm, which seemed to vary depending on the kind(underground water vs public water) and the location.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of hydrogen water on duck production in a field study. A total of 600 one-day-old ducks (Pekin) were randomly allotted to two treatment groups with three replicates each having 100 birds per pen in a completely randomized design. The duck production parameters measured included weight gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency. For duck drinking water, general water supplied from the farm was used as the control, and hydrogen water was supplied by installing a device that generates hydrogen (T1 groups). There was no statistical significance in duck weight gain between the two treatment groups (p>0.05). In addition, no significant difference in feed intake was found in both the control and T1 groups (p>0.05), and the range of values was similar. Feed efficiency was not significant different between the treatment groups (p>0.05), and there was no remarkable difference in the range of vaules. These results indicate that hydrogen water did not influence duck production.
Water quality criteria for human health protection are derived based on the human health risk assessment. Water quality criteria in Korean freshwater bodies have been derived according to the equations developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The equations include the fish intake parameter, which is very important factor that significantly influences on the criteria derivation. So far, several fish intake values were used in human health risk assessment for water quality standards and effluent standards. However, these values are not consistent and they refer to various sources. Therefore, there is a need to suggest the most appropriate value of fish intake parameter to derive freshwater quality criteria in Korea. In this study, national and international fish intake values were widely collected and evaluated to select the adequate value of fish intake parameter that can be applied in Korea. The USEPA presented fish intake parameter as the 17.5 g/day for general adults and sport fishers and 142.4 g/day for subsistence fishers. In Korean reports, wide range values of 2 to 67.7 g/day were suggested as fish intake value. These values included finfish and shellfish intakes in common but had various habits. This study found that the 52.4 g/day suggested in Korean Exposure Factors Handbook published by the Ministry of Environment in 2007 seemed to be the suitable fish intake parameter to derive the freshwater quality criteria in Korea. The value is based on water corrected intakes of finfish and shellfish present in freshwater and coastal areas. We expect that this report can be useful to select suitable fish intake value in human health risk assessment for establishing freshwater quality standard in Korea.

This study was performed to ascertain the possibility of securing inflows to reservoir with low ratio of watershed to paddy field areas by outside diversion weir. The case of Maengdong reservoir and Samryong diversion weir was selected. Most of inflows to Maengdong reservoir with watershed area of $7.06\;km^2$ and total storage capacity of $1,269{\times}10^4\;m^3$ are filled with intake water from outside Samryong diversion weir. Only using water storage data in Maengdong reservoir from 1991 to 2009, the range of water intake in Samryong diversion weir to Maengdong reservoir was optimized to 0.135~30 mm/d, from which water intake to Maengdong reservoir was $1,672.9{\times}10^4\;m^3$ (70.1 %) and downstream outflow to Weonnam reservoir was $714.4{\times}10^4\;m^3$ (29.9 %). The parameters of DAWAST model for reservoir inflow were determined to UMAX of 313.8 mm, LMAX 20.3 mm, FC 136.8 mm, CP 0.018, and CE 0.007. Inflows to Maengdong reservoir were $427.1{\times}10^4\;m^3$ (20.3 %) from inside watershed, and $1,672.9{\times}10^4\;m^3$ (79.7 %) from outside. Paddy irrigation water requirements were estimated to $1,549{\times}10^4\;m^3$ on annual average. Operation rule curve was drawn by using daily inflow and irrigation requirement data. By securing the amount of inflow to Maengdong reservoir to about 80 % from outside Samryong diversion weir, water supply capacity for irrigation of $1,549{\times}10^4\;m^3/yr$ was analyzed to be enough. Additional water supplies for instream flow were analyzed to $1,412\;m^3/d$ in normal reservoir operation, $36,000\;m^3/d$ in withdrawal limit operation by operation rule curve from October to March of non irrigation period.

Recently, pollution from gunpowder due to shell shootings at military drilling sites has raised various environmental concerns. The purpose of this study is to predict the contamination level of RDX in the soil area of the firing range zone near Anwol river watershed, the study site, and the intake area, Anwol river and Imjin river, as a function of time and space. In this study, a multimedia model was developed to predict the variation of RDX contamination by rainfall. The range of the medium was limited to soil, water, and sediment, and excluded the atmosphere, taking into account the physical and chemical properties of RDX with low vapor pressure and low Henry's constant. The pollutant levels of the waters of compartments, including the last section of the Imjin River affecting the water intake, was compared with the environmental standard for RDX.

Hydraulic model tests are performed to find economical and hdrqulically stable design of cooling water intake channel of steam power plant. The result of tests show that the standard distributiion of y-components in the chamber of CWP(circulating Water Pump) are recommended below 3.5 to maintain hydraulic stability, so that this value is considered as the design criteria. Common basin is necessary to improve the hydraulic stability of inflow, however the longer basin does not always improve the hydraulic stability , and the optimal length of basin can be found in some range. From the results the flow stability maintained the best condition when the length of basin is 7.2m. Beside the standard tests the auxiliary tests like edge , baffle, trapezoidal section and increase of pump capacity are carried out based on the optimal condition foudn in the standard tests. From the series of tests the economical and hydraulically stable design of intake channel was proposed.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) are various applied as chelating agents for metal ions, then they are widely used in many industrial processes and domestic products. A method is described for the determination of EDTA and NTA in water samples by GC/MS . The reaction temperature, reaction time and pH for esterification of EDTA and NTA were investigated using 10% sulfuric acid-methanol, ethanol and propanol. Optimum conditions were obtained by the esterification in 80$\^{C}$ for 1hr with ethanol. Method detection limits of ethylated EDTA and NTA in the 200 ml of water samples were 0.05 ng/ml, respectively, EDTA and NTA could be determined in the range of 0.05∼23.6 and 0.05∼7.0 ng/ml in treated water, and in the range of 0.06∼25.0 and 0.05∼6.40 ng/ml in raw water respectively. Risk assessments with EDTA and NTA exposure by drinking water ingestion were carried out. Based on the results of analysis, chronic daily intakes of EDTA and NTA would be less than the value of acceptable daily intake or tolerable daily intake.
This research aims to assess the tight seismic risk curve of the intake tower at Geumgwang reservoir by considering the recorded historical earthquake data in the Korean Peninsula. The seismic fragility, a significant part of risk assessment, is updated by using Bayesian inference to consider the uncertainties and computational efficiency. The reservoir is one of the largest reservoirs in Korea for the supply of agricultural water. The intake tower controls the release of water from the reservoir. The seismic risk assessment of the intake tower plays an important role in the risk management of the reservoir. Site-specific seismic hazard is computed based on the four different seismic source maps of Korea. Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA) method is used to estimate the annual exceedance rate of hazard for corresponding Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA). Hazard deaggregation is shown at two customary hazard levels. Multiple dynamic analyses and a nonlinear static pushover analysis are performed for deriving fragility parameters. Thereafter, Bayesian inference with Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is used to update the fragility parameters by integrating the results of the analyses. This study proves to reduce the uncertainties associated with fragility and risk curve, and to increase significant statistical and computational efficiency. The range of seismic risk curve of the intake tower is extracted for the reservoir site by considering four different source models and updated fragility function, which can be effectively used for the risk management and mitigation of reservoir.
The purpose of this study was to examine bowel habits, dietary habits, and nutrient intake of constipated adults, and the effects of prune products on relieving constipation symptoms. Fifty one adults with self-reported constipation (mean age 23 years, range 19-41 years, 10 males and 41 females) participated in this study. After a baseline survey on bowel habits and dietuy habits, participants were asked to consume at least 50 g of prune and 200 ml of prune juice per day during a 4-week period in addition to usual diet. Nutrient intake was estimated by a 24 hour recall at the baseline and once every week by diet records during the intervention. Data were analyzed after classifying the subjects into mild constipation group and severe constipation group by the severity of the symptoms. During the intervention, the subjects with mild constipation consumed 56 g of prunes (about 5.6 fruits) and 200 ml of prune juice, and the subjects with severe constipation consumed 59 g of prunes (about 5.9 fruits) and 207 ml of prune juice. Average intakes of energy, dietary fiber and water of the subjects in the mild constipation and severe constipation group increased during the intervention compared to the baseline. Average dietary fiber intake of the mild constipation and severe constipation groups significantly increased from 12.5 g and 11.6 g at the baseline to 18.5 g and 16.8 g after consuming prune products, respectively. These changes were accompanied by an increase in the number of bowel movements, a decrease of defecation time, a change to a softer stool consistency, and a decrease of abdominal pain during defecation. Seventy two subjects answered that prune products were effective to improve their overall constipation symptoms. Our data show that supplementation of prune products is effective to provide energy, dietary fiber and water, and to relieve constipation symptoms for constipated adults.
This study has been conducted to estimate the occurrence of Cryptosporidium oocysts in water supplies in the Metropolitan area of Seoul, South Korea, for 10 years from 2000 to 2009. Water samples were collected quarterly at 6 intakes in the Han River and its largest stream and 6 conventional Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) serving drinking water for 10 million people of Seoul. Cryptosporidium oocysts were found in 22.5% of intake water samples and arithmetic mean was 0.65 oocysts/10 L (range 0-22 oocysts/10 L). Although the annual mean of oocyst number was as low as 0.04-1.90 oocysts/10 L, 3 peaks in 2004 and 2007 were observed and the pollution level was a little higher in winter. The lowest density was observed at Paldang intake and the pollution level increased at Kuui and Jayang intakes. At the end of the largest stream, oocysts were found in 70% of collected samples (mean 5.71 oocysts/10 L) and it seemed that its joining the Han River resulted in the increase at Kuui intake and downstream. Oocyst removal by physical process exceeded 2.0-2.3 log and then all finished water samples collected at 6 WTPs were negative for Cryptosporidium in each 100 L sample for 10 years. These results suggested that domestic wastewater from the urban region could be a source of Cryptosporidium pollution and separating sewage systems adjacent to the intakes could be meaningful for some intakes having weakness related to parasitological water quality.
