  • Structured laser light is a widely used method for obtaining 3D range information in Machine Vision. However, The structured laser light method is based on assumption that the surface of objects is Lambertian. When the observed surfaces are highly specularly reflective, the laser light can be detected in various parts on the image due to a specular reflection and secondary reflection. This makes wrong range data and the image sensor unusable for the specular objects. To discriminate wrong range data from obtained image data, we have proposed a new algorithm by using the cross section of image block. To show the performance of the proposed method, a series of experiments was, carried out on: the simple geometric shaped objects. The proposed method shows a dramatic improvement of 3D range data better than the typical structured laser light method.

  • 2D sliced CT images hardly express the human disease in a space. This space expression can be reconstructed into 3D image by piling up the CT sliced image in succession. In medical image, in order to get the reconstructed 3D images, expensive system or much calculation time is needed. But by changing the method of reconstruction procedure and limit the range, the reconstruction time could be reduced. In this study, to reduce the processing time and memory, we suggested a method of interpolation and ray casting processing at the same time in a limited range. Such a limited range processing have advantages that we could reduce the unnecessary interpolation and ray casting. Through a experiment, it is founded that the reconstruction time and the memory was much reduced.

  • An efficient block based two-layer JPEG encoding algorithm is proposed to compress high dynamic range (HDR) images in this work. The proposed algorithm separates an input HDR image into a tone-mapped low dynamic range (LDR) image and a ratio image, which represents the quotients of the original HDR pixels divided by the tone-mapped LDR pixels. Then, the tone-mapped LDR image is compressed using the standard JPEG scheme to preserve backward compatibility and the ratio image is encoded to minimize a cost function that models the perception of each block with different quantization parameters in the human visual system (HVS). Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides better performance than the conventional method, which encodes the ratio image without any prior information of blocks.

  • In this paper, we propose three compensation methods to solve problems in high-resolution airborne infrared camera and to improve long-range target information acquisition performance. First, image motion and temporal noise reduction technique which is caused by atmospheric turbulence. Second, thermal blurring image correction technique by imperfect performance of NUC(Non Uniformity Correction) or raising the internal temperature of the camera. Finally, DRC(Dynamic Range Compression) and flicker removing technique of 14bits HDR(High Dynamic Range) infrared image. Through this study, we designed techniques to improve the acquisition performance of long-range target information of high-resolution airborne infrared camera, and compared and analyzed the performance improvement result with implemented images.

  • Devices capable of capturing and displaying high dynamic range (HDR) images with significantly increased brightness range compared to low dynamic range (LDR) images have been developed and various methods for efficiently converting the brightness range of an image have been developed. In this paper, we propose a reverse tone mapping method using a guided filter to efficiently convert LDR images into HDR images. After obtaining brightness enhancement function (BEF) using a guided filter, we can reconstruct HDR image from one LDR image. In addition, when the image is too bright or dark, the proposed method maximizes the image quality of the reconstructed HDR image by estimating and adjusting the exposure value before expanding the brightness range of images. Computer simulations show that the proposed method produces HDR images of superior quality compared with the conventional methods.

  • Generally, to acquire an HDR image, many images that cover the entire dynamic range of the scene with different exposure times are required, then these images are fused into one HDR image. This paper proposes an efficient method for the HDR image acquisition with small number of images. First, we estimated scenic dynamic range using two images with different exposure times. These two images contain the upper and lower limit of the scenic dynamic range. Independently of the scene, according to varied exposure times, similar characteristics for both the maximum gray levels in images that include the upper limit and the minimum gray levels in images that include the lower limit are identified. After modeling these characteristics, the scenic dynamic range is estimated using the modeling results. This estimated scenic dynamic range is then used to select the proper exposure times for the acquisition of an HDR image. We selected only three proper exposure times because entire dynamic range of the cameras could be covered by three dynamic range of the cameras with different exposure times. To evaluate the error of the HDR image, experiments using virtual digital camera images were carried out. For several test images, the error of the HDR image using proposed method was comparable to that of the HDR image which utilize more than ten images for the HDR image acquisition.

  • Fractal coding is image compression techniques using one of image characteristics self-transformability. In fractal image coding, the encoding process is to select the domain block similar to a range block. The reconstructed image quality of fractal image coding depends on similitude between a range block and the selected domain block. Domain block similar to a range blocks. In fact, the error of the reconstructed image adds up the generated error in encoding process and the generated error in decoding process. But current domain block estimating function considered only the encoding error. We propose a domain block estimating function to consider not only the encoding error but also the decoding error. By computer simulation, it was verified to obtain the high quality reconstructed image.

  • In the conventional fractal image compression in the DWT(discrete wavelet transform), the domain and range blocks were classified as B${\times}$B block size first before all domain block for each range block was searched. The conventional method has a disadvantages that the encoding time takes too long, since the domain block for entire image was searched. As an enhancement to such inefficiencies and image quality, this paper proposes wavelet-based fractal image compression with multiscale factors. Thus, this proposed method uses multiscale factor along each level and band to enhance an overall image quality. In encoding process of this method, the range blocks are not searched for all the domain blocks; however, using the self affine system the range blocks are selected from the blocks in the upper level. The image qualify of the conventional method is 32.30[dB], and the proposed method is 35.97[dB]. The image quality is increased by 3.67[dB].

  • In this paper, a wide dynamic range complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor with the adjustable sensitivity by using cascode metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) and inverter is proposed. The characteristics of the CMOS image sensor were analyzed through experimental results. The proposed active pixel sensor consists of eight transistors operated under various light intensity conditions. The cascode MOSFET is operated as the constant current source. The current generated from the cascode MOSFET varies with the light intensity. The proposed CMOS image sensor has wide dynamic range under the high illumination owing to logarithmic response to the light intensity. In the proposed active pixel sensor, a CMOS inverter is added. The role of the CMOS inverter is to determine either the conventional mode or the wide dynamic range mode. The cascode MOSFET let the current flow the current if the CMOS inverter is turned on. The number of pixels is $140(H){\times}180(V)$ and the CMOS image sensor architecture is composed of a pixel array, multiplexer (MUX), shift registers, and biasing circuits. The sensor was fabricated using $0.35{\mu}m$ 2-poly 4-metal CMOS standard process.

  • We reconstruct 3D surface from range image that consists of range map and texture map, and simplify the reconstructed triangular mesh. In this paper, we introduce fast simplification method that is able to glue texture to 3D surface model and adapt to real-time multipled level-of detail. We will verify the efficiency by applying to the scanned data of Korean relics.
