  • Purpose: Thermal sensory test as an essential part of quantitative sensory testing (QST) has been recognized as a useful tool in the evaluation of the trigeminal nerve function. Normative data in the orofacial region have been reported but the data on differences in the test site, sex and ethnicity are still insufficient. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the normal range of orofacial thermal QST data in the healthy Korean women, and assess sex difference of thermal perception in the orofacial regions. Methods: Thermal QST was conducted on 20 healthy women participants (mean age, 26.4 years; range, 21 to 34 years). The thermal thresholds (cold detection threshold, CDT; warm detection threshold, WDT; cold pain threshold, CPT; and heat pain threshold, HPT) were measured bilaterally at the 5 trigeminal sites (the forehead, cheek, mentum, lower lip and tongue tip). The normative thermal thresholds of women in the orofacial region were evaluated using one-way ANOVA and compared with the previously reported data from age- and site-matched 30 healthy men (mean age, 26.1 years; range, 23 to 32 years) using two-way ANOVA. One experienced operator performed the tests of both sexes and all tests were done in the same condition except the time variability. Results: Women showed significant site differences for the CDT (p<0.001), WDT (p<0.001), and HPT (p=0.047) in the orofacial region. The CDT (p<0.001) and the CPT (p=0.007) presented significant sex difference unlike the WDT and the HPT. Conclusions: The thermal sensory evaluation in the orofacial region should be considered in the context of site and sex and the normative data in this study could be useful for assessment of the sensory abnormalities in the clinical setting.

  • The Geant4 simulation toolkit provides improved or renewed physics model according to the version. The latest Geant4.9.3 which has been recoded by developers applies inserted Livermore data and renewed physics model to the low energy electromagnetic physics model. And also, Geant4.9.3 improved the physics factors by modified code. In this study, the stopping power and CSDA(Continuously Slowing Down Approximation) range data of electron or particles were acquired in various material and then, these data were compared with NIST(National Institute of Standards and Technology) data. Through comparison between data of Geant4 simulation and NIST, the improvement of physics model on low energy electromagnetic of Geant4.9.3 was evaluated by comparing the Geant4.9.2.

  • In this paper, by using D2D communications that perform direct communications among devices within small transmission range of each device without base station, we assume that a device generates and transmits data packets to other proximate devices and the devices which receive the data packets relay those to other adjacent devices. To maximize the total number of devices which successfully receive data packets, Epidemic routing protocol is considered in this paper. In Epidemic routing protocol, all devices which received data packets try to relay the packets to other adjacent devices. We assume various network environment where devices are densely distributed in specific area(crowded area). In this environment, D2D SD can be a source node and D2D devices can be relay nodes. By setting transmission range of D2D SD and D2D devices as parameters, we analyze performance results of coverage probability of Epidemic routing protocol through intensive simulations.

  • Background: Citizen science is becoming a mainstream approach of baseline data collection to monitor biodiversity and climate change. Dragonflies (Odonata) have been ranked as the highest priority group in biodiversity monitoring for global warming. Ischnura senegalensis Rambur has been designated a biological indicator of climate change and is being monitored by the citizen science project "Korean Biodiversity Observation Network." This study has been performed to understand changes in the distribution range of I. senegalensis in response to climate change using citizen science data in South Korea. Results: We constructed a dataset of 397 distribution records for I. senegalensis, ranging from 1980 to 2020. The number of records sharply increased over time and space, and in particular, citizen science monitoring data accounted for the greatest proportion (58.7%) and covered the widest geographical range. This species was only distributed in the southern provinces until 2010 but was recorded in the higher latitudes such as Gangwon-do, Incheon, Seoul, and Gyeonggi-do (max. Paju-si, 37.70° latitude) by 2020. A species distribution model showed that the annual mean temperature (Bio1; 63.2%) and the maximum temperature of the warmest month (Bio5; 16.7%) were the most critical factors influencing its distribution. Future climate change scenarios have predicted an increase in suitable habitats for this species. Conclusions: This study is the first to show the northward expansion in the distribution range of I. senegalensis in response to climate warming in South Korea over the past 40 years. In particular, citizen science was crucial in supplying critical baseline data to detect the distribution change toward higher latitudes. Our results provide new insights on the value of citizen science as a tool for detecting the impact of climate change on ecosystems in South Korea.

  • In this paper, an adaptive range aggregation spatial index method is proposed for spatial range query in ubiquitous sensor networks. As the ubiquitous sensor networks are the new information-oriented paradigm, many energy efficient spatial range query methods in ubiquitous sensor networks environment are studied vigorously. In sensor networks, users can monitor environment scalar data such as temperature and humidity during user defined time and spatial ranges. In order to execute spatial range query efficiently, rectangle based index methods are proposed, such as SPIX. But they define the return path as the opposite of its query transmit path. However, the sensor nodes in queried ranges are closed to each other, they can't aggregate the sensed value in a queried range because their query transmission paths are different. As a result, the previous methods waste energy unnecessarily to aggregate sensing data out of the queried range. In this paper, an adaptive aggregation index method is proposed that can aggregate values in a user defined range adaptively by using its neighbor information. It is shown that sensor power is saved efficiently by using the proposed method over the performance evaluation.

  • Animals exhibit certain behaviors and movement patterns as they react to their internal needs, external stimuli, and surrounding environments. They have a bounded range in which they mostly spend their time, and it is referred to as a home range. Based on the fact that the home range is a critical area for the survival and preservation of species, there has been a growing body of research on developing more precise home range estimation methods to use the estimated ranges as a ground for establishing an effective conservation policy since the early 1940s. Recent rapid advancements in telemetry technology that resulted in the presence of autocorrelation between locations with short time intervals revealed the limitations of the existing estimators. Many novel estimators have been developed to compensate for it by incorporating autocorrelation in calculating home ranges. However, studies on the animal home range are still in their early stage in Korea, and newly developed methodologies have not yet been adopted. Therefore, this study aims to introduce the foreign home range estimation methods and foster domestic research activities on home ranges. Firstly, we compared and contemplated seven estimators by categorizing them into geometrical and statistical methodologies and then divided them into estimators that assume independent observations and those that consider autocorrelation in each category. After that, the home ranges of black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris) were calculated using GPS tracking data for the month of June and derived home range estimators by applying the methodology introduced in this study. We analyzed and compared the results to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each method. Lastly, we proposed a guideline that can help researchers choose an appropriate estimator for home range calculation based on the animal location data characteristics and analysis purpose.

  • In this paper, the image formation by the motion compensation technique for Synthetic Aperture Radar system(SAR) were realized through the computer simulation. The motion compensation technique performed image data with the range compression, the compensation procedure, the azimuth compensation and the noise elimination procedure. The range compression procedure transform the SAR raw data into the frequency domain and correlate with the range reference function and then inversely transform into the time domain. The compensation procedure contain the aircraft fluctuations compensation and the radar image degrading effect elimination procedure which was caused by image formation algorithm itself. The aircraft fluctuations compensation procedure perform the first stage which correct the phase angle and the second stage which calculate the Doppler frequency and determine the coordinate of the received signal. The radar image degrading effect elimination procedure also perform range migration compensation and the image defocussing effect compensation. The azimuth compression procedure transform the compensation data to the frequency domain and correlate with the azimuth reference function. The azimuth correlated data are inversely transformed to the time domain which is called SAR image data. When the above procedure were completed, the image data contains the received signals mixed with noise. The threshold technique was applied to elimination the noise from the mixed image data.

  • We present a simulation study of an algorithm for the range and angle of arrival(AOA) estimation with an interferometric synthetic aperture radar(InSAR) altimeter using a real digital elevation model(DEM). We also illustrate a step-by-step procedure of generating raw InSAR data, as well as their range and azimuth compressed data, which is to be used for the subsequent altitude and angle estimation. The AOA is estimated using a deterministic maximum likelihood estimator(DMLE) applied to the first arrived point for each pulse in the compressed data obtained with three antennas. The range bin size and the pulse repetition interval(PRI) are much smaller than the cell size of the DEM used in this study. To make the DEM compatible to the radar parameters, we first generate a higher resolution DEM by linearly interpolating the given DEM. After a brief description of the principle of the InSAR altimeter, the algorithms for altitude and angle estimation are presented, and their performance is assessed through simulation.

  • The concentrations of atmospheric dimethylsulfide (DMS) and the relevant environmental parameters were measured as part of the 3rd year project (August 1997-July 1998) to investigate the long range transport of atmospheric pollutants (LRTAP) between China and Korea. The main purpose of this study was to derive the contribution of natural sulfur emissions (represented by oceanic DMS fluxes) in estimating the total budgets of sulfur transported across the Yellow Sea. To this end, DMS concentrations were determined from the two western coastal monitoring sites (Cheju and Kang Hwa islands) during three field intensive experiments covering fall, winter, and spring seasons. From these series of experiments, we found that DMS concentrations of Cheju and Kang Iffwa were averaged at 74 $\pm$ 49.5 (range: 19~282 pptv (N=81)) and 63.7 $\pm$ 35.1 (range:25.8~131 pptv (N=19)), respectively. By combining these 3rd year data with those measured previously from the 2nd year, we were able to derive some general pictures of seasonal distribution patterns of DMS. Although DMS data were difficult to derive relationships with other parameters determined simultaneously, they were rarely exhibiting good correlations with temperature or wind speed. The oceanic flux of DMS for the western coastal regions of Korea, when estimated based on our data from two islands, was found on the range of 8.8~12.2 GgS/yr. By considering the relationship between DMS and non-seasalt sulfate, we could also provide rough estimate of relative significance of natural emissions of sulfur. If oceanic DMS emitted from those regions is entirely converted to sulfate, it could represent 10 to 25% of total sulfur budgets in the western Sea of Korea.
