  • This paper presents the damage assessment of a building structure by using a novel optical fiber accelerometer system. Especially, a sub-scaled building model is designed and manufactured to check up the feasibility of the optical fiber accelerometer for structural health monitoring. The novel accelerometer exploits the moir$\acute{e}$ fringe optical phenomenon and two pairs of optical fibers to measure the displacement with a high accuracy, and furthermore a pendulum to convert the displacement into acceleration. A prototype of optical fiber accelerometer system has been successfully developed that consists of a sensor head, a control unit and a signal processing unit. The building model is also designed as a 4-story building with a rectangular shape of $200{\times}300$ mm of edges. Each floor is connected to the next ones by 6 steel columns which are threaded rods. Basically, a random vibration test of the building model is done with a shaker and all of acceleration data is successfully measured at the assigned points by the optical fiber accelerometer. The experiments are repeated in the undamaged state and the damaged state. The comparison of dynamic parameters including the natural frequencies and the eigenvectors is successfully carried out. Finally, the optical fiber accelerometer is proven to be prospective to evaluate dynamic characteristics of a building structure for the damage assessment.

  • Background: The present study used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate the neural substrates for modified version of Treisman's visual search task. Methods: Two volunteers who gave informed consent participated MEG experiment. One was 27- year old male and another was 24-year-old female. All were right handed. Experiment were performed using a 306-channel biomagnetometer (Neuromag LTD). There were three task conditions in this experiment. The first was searching an open circle among seven closed circles (open condition). The second was searching a closed circle among seven uni-directionally open circles (closed condition). And the third was searching a closed circle among seven eight-directionally open circles (random (closed) condition). In one run, participants performed one task condition so there were three runs in one session of experiment. During one session, 128 trials were performed during every three runs. One participant underwent one session of experiment. The participant pressed button when they found targets. Magnetic source localization images were generated using software programs that allowed for interactive identification of a common set of fiduciary points in the MRI and MEG coordinate frames. Results: In each participant we can found activations of anterior cingulate, primary visual and association cortices, posterior parietal cortex and brain areas in the vicinity of thalamus. Conclusions: we could find activations corresponding to anterior and posterior visual attention systems.

  • An accurate knowledge of the flash point is important in developing appropriate preventive and control measures in industrial fire protection. The lower flash points for the 2-propanol+acetic acid and 2-propanol+-n-propionic acid systems were measured by Cleveland open cup apparatus. The experimental data were compared with the values calculated by the Raoult's law, the Wilson equation and the NRTL(non random two liquids) equation. The calculated values based on the Wilson and NRTL equations were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law. And the predictive curve of the flash point prediction model, based on NRTL equation described the experimentally-derived data were more effective than the case of the Wilson equation.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the applicability of Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) vegetation indices on a quantitative analysis. For evaluation, the vegetation indices such as RVI, NDVI and SAVI were extracted by using COMS GOCI and Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imageries. The 4,000 points using simple random sampling (SRS) method were randomly extracted from land areas except ocean to compare the vegetation indices from two images. The results of linear regression showed that the regression coefficients of RVI, NDVI, and SAVI between COMS GOCI and Terra MODIS were 0.66~0.82, 0.71~0.83, and 0.71~0.83, respectively. Especially, the regression coefficients of RVI (r=0.85), NDVI (r=0.91) and SAVI (r=0.91) were strongly related from September 2011 to January 2012. Thus, COMS GOCI can be substituted for particular periods and it needs to verify additionally.

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate suicidal ideation and spirituality of college students. Method: The participants were 295 college students located in Busan city and Kyung Nam Province. The study used a 'Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire' and a 'Korean Spirituality Scale'. The collected data was analyzed for t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. Result: The level of suicidal ideation and spirituality of the participants averaged 1.73 and 3.44 respectively. In each sub-factor, meaning and purpose of life was the highest at 3.70 points. In differences of suicidal ideation and spirituality followed by general characteristics, there were significant differences according to gender, major, religion, and cohabitation. There were inverse correlations among suicidal ideation, spirituality level, connectedness, meaning and purpose of life, inner resources, and awareness. Suicidal ideation was significantly associated with major, spirituality level, connectedness, and meaning and purpose of life which explained 22% of variance in suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Future research should examine relations between college students' suicidal ideation and spirituality level through random sampling. Development of a program to lessen college students' suicidal ideation and to raise their spirituality level should be prudent.

  • In this paper we propose a noise reduction algorithm which based on cellular automata with the local median rule. It is supposed that there is no information about the features of the image that must be improved. The proposed method behavior is to locally increase or decrease the gray level differences of the image without loss of the main characteristics of the image. The dynamical behavior of these automata is completely determined by Lyapunov operators for sequential and parallel update. We have found that the automata present very fast convergence to fixed points, stability in front of random noisy images. Based on the experimental results we discuss the advantage and efficiency.

  • In receiving the digital TV signal, both decoding delay and the channel hopping delay are very critical factors in applications. The intra-slice coding in the MPEG-2 SIMPLE PROFLE of No B-picture is one of the primary methods for short delay time in video decoding. It has the advantage of short decoding delay, but has the drawback of long channel hopping delay time. In this paper, we propose a method to reduce the channel delay with negligible loss in SNR performance. It is shown that dividing pictures into several regions of slices and adding some restriction in motion vector search for inter-frame coding. hence the random acess points are effectively increased. and the channel hopping delay is reduced.

  • An improved derivative thermometric titration apparatus designed around operational amplifiers is described which is capable of monitoring the small temperature change and of computing the derivatives for accentuation of the titration end point that is difficult to locate by extrapolation methods. The instrument is constructed of four commercial operational amplifiers. A use of dummy cell provides the subtraction means for compensation of the initial temperature and random temperature fluctuations with a resultant gain in signal-to-noise ratio. The successive differentiation action of the computer has been nearly "perfect," so that the two breaks (blank or starting and end point of the titration curve can be located with the precision of 0.2% by observing two peak points on the second derivative curve. Arrangements useful in obtaining such a good derivative response that is exactly proportional to the input signal are discussed. Plots of the enthalphogram and its derivatives are presented, with the results of several titrations used to evaluate the performance of the apparatus.

  • This paper describes a newly developed method of production simulation by using the Mixture of Cumulant Approximation (MOCA). In this method, the load is modelled as random variable (r.v.) which can be interpreted in terms of partitioning the load into various categories. We can consider the load shape of multi-modal characteristics. The number of load category and demarcation points of each load category are calculated automatically by using interpolation and least square method. Each generating unit of a supply system is modelled as r.v. of unit outage capacity according to the number of unit outage subset. Since the computation burden of each subset's moments increases exponentially as units are convolved to the system, we further derive the specific recursive formulae. In simulating the energy limited units, hydro unit simulation is performed using Energy Invariance Property and the simulation of pumped storage unit is modelled as compulsory and economic operations. The proposed MOCA method is applide to the test systems and the results are compared with those of cumulant and Booth Baleriaux method. It is verified that the MOCA method is considerably reliable and stable both pathological and well behaved system.
