When multiple features are presented in the image the computational models for stereopsis select the most activated matches through the excitatory and inhibitory interactions among all possible matches. Using the random-dot stereogram with two surfaces. we investigate whether human binocular mechanism selects the most activated matches. The dots consisting a surface lying in a fixation plane were selected randomly while each of the dots consisting the other surface was paired with each of the original dots in the following manner. After finding the position of each dots in the original random pattern we placed an additional dot to the left and to the right of the original position in each of the left and right image of a stereogram respectively. The luminance of additional dots was varied while that of the original random dots was fixed so that the hypothetical matches presumably could be activated differently. Across the luminance condition the depth of each surface was measured to examine whether matches to be selected were changed depending on the activation level of possible matches. When the luminance of two patterns was within 30% of one another observers perceived an opaque surface. Beyond this value two transparent surfaces were seen with the magnitude of perceived depth varying with relative luminance of two patterns. When original pattern was brighter one additional surface was perceived at the depth corresponding to the disparity of original pattern. When original dot was dimmer. however the depth of an additional surface corresponded to the disparity of newly introduced pattern. These results suggest that there are dynamic interactions within the matching process whereby highly activated matches inhibit weaker one.
Purpose: We investigated validity of a monitor-based computer eye test program, Test Chart 2000 Pro (developed by Thomson Software Solutions, UK). Methods: We chose ten common eye tests of the Test Chart 2000 Pro and Korean Standard Eye Test, applying them to same subject groups each by each, followed by comparison and analyses of agreement degree of the results. Results: Among the ten eye tests, Snellen Chart, Cross-cyl target, Duochrome test, Fan and Block test, and Random dot stereograms showed statistically significant agreement between both the Korean standard eye test method and Test Chart 2000 Pro. On the other hand, some disagreements were found between the two eye test methods in LogMAR Chart, Single Letter Chart, Phoria Test, Fixation Disparity Test, and Worth 4 Dot Test. Conclusions: Comparing to the Korean Standard Eye Test that consists of Han eye chart and Phoroptor, validity of the Test Chart 2000 Pro is not so high. Further improvements of the Test Chart 2000 Pro in accuracy are required.

Stereo vision is useful to obtain three dimensional depth information from two images taken from different view points. In this paper, we reduce searching area for correspondence by using the intra-scanline constraint, and utilize the inter-scanline constraint and the property of disparity continuity among the neighboring pixels for relaxation. Nodes with 3-D stucture are located on the axes of two views, and have matching possibility of correspondent pixels of two images. A matching is accepted if a node at the intersection of the disparity axes has the greatest matching possibility. Otherwise, the matching possibility of the node is updated by relaxation with the cooperation of neighboring nodes. Further relaxation with competition of two views is applied to a matching possibility of randomly selected node. The consensus of two views increases the confidence of matching, and removes a blurring phenomenon on the discontinuity of object. This approach has been tested with various types of image such as random dot stereogram and aerial image, and the experimental results show good matching performance.

Stereo vision is useful in obtaining three dimensional depth information from two images taken from different view points. Neural network modeling for stereo matching, the key step in stereo vision, is defined by an energy function satisfying with three constraints proposed by Marr and Poggio. Stereo matching is then carried out through the network to find minimum energy corresponding to the optimized solution of the problem. An algorithm for stereo matching using an analog neural network is presented here. The network can reduce errors in initial state an early iteration steps by adoption of continuous sigmoid function in stead of binary state. The experimental results show good matching performance for sparse random dot stereogram and real image.
Many studies tried to develop a 3D display based stereo test as a substitute for the conventional stereo test. Although many 3D monitor based stereo tests have various advantages over the conventional stereo tests with printed stimuli, they have a crucial limitation in manipulating disparity. The least value for disparity manipulation is one pixel, which is too big to screen the normal stereo acuity in pc environment with a short viewing distance. In this explorative study, a Gabor image was employed as a test stimulus, because its position can be manipulated by changing its phase information, which allows sub-pixel manipulation for disparity. Instead of employing the methods of the conventional stereo tests where measurement was made only once for each of a wide range of disparity values, 10 replications were administrated for each of 6 disparity levels. The results from the test using Gabor images were compared with those using random dot stimulus because the latter stimulus was exactly the same as that of the conventional stereo test. The correlation coefficient between two tests was found to be moderate. After one month later, the whole test was repeated in the same settings. The correlation coefficient between test and retest results from Gabor images was found to be as high as that from a random dot stimulus, implying high test-retest reliability. These results suggest that a Gabor stimulus could be used as a test stimulus for the valid and reliable stereo test, even in the limited condition, such as 3D environment with a short viewing distance and a condition for evaluating the stereo acuity very precisely.

In this paper, we propose a visual fatigue prediction metric which considers individual fusional characteristics for stereoscopic video. It predicts the visual fatigue level by examining the disparity and motion characteristics of 3D videos. In addition, we classified the viewers into 2 groups according to fusional limit and the slope of fusional response which are acquired from random dot stereogram test. Then, Pearson's and Spearman's correlation coefficient was measured between the proposed metrics and the subjective results, acquiring 80% and 79%.
When two objects are tying in the same visual direction there occurs abrupt depth change between two objects, which is against the assumption of the computational model for stereopsis on the surfaces in a natural scene. For this reason, this stimulus configuration is popularly used in the studies for the effectiveness of the constraints employed in the computational model. Contrary to the results from two nails (or objects) tying in the same visual direction, the two different surfaces from random-dot stereogram (RDS) in the same situation can be seen simultaneously in the different depth. The seemingly contradictory results between two situations my reflect the different strategies imposed by binocular mechanism for each situation during binocular matching process. Otherwise, the surfaces tying in the same visual direction is not equivalent situation to two objects tying in the same visual direction with regards to matching process. In order to examine above possibilities, the stereoscopic depth of the surface was measured after manipulating the visual direction of the surface elements. The visual direction of each dot pair from different surfaces in RDS (in Experiment 1) or the visual direction of line (hawing rectangle with regard to that of the vertical line (in Experiment 2) was manipulated. The stereoscopic depth of the surface was found to be varied depending on visual direction of the surface elements in both RDS and line hawing stimulus. Similar to the results from two nails situation depth of the surface was greatly reduced when each surface element was tying in the same visual direction as that of the other surface element or the other object. These results suggest that binocular mechanism imposes no different strategy in resolving correspondence problem in both two objects and two surfaces situation. And the results were discussed in the context of usefulness of the constraints employed in the computational model for stereopsis.
Purpose: To study the change of fixation disparity and accommodation as fusion contrast is deteriorated. Methods: 16 subjects who had above 20/20 and stereopsis took part. Monocular and binocular refraction were done with Zeiss Polatest Classic whereas the critical angle for stereopsis was done with TNO. A computer programmed with Random-Dot stereogram and vernier test managed a precise change of the fusion contrast and exposure time. Results: The fixation disparity was influenced by reduction of fusion contrast and had tendancy to exophoria (p=0.0004), especially it is considerably higher when uncrossed disparity was shown to exophoric subjects. Although accommodation was not influenced by a change of fusion contrast (p=0.803), vernier acuity was influenced (p=0.0000). Conclusions: Exophoric trend arose as the fusion contrast was reduced, nevertheless there was no accommadative change.
