  • The existing raised pavement marker, however, have some limitations. Most of them are square-shaped which makes only forward and backward retro-reflection, their orientation can be easily changed by impact of vehicle, and the surface reflector can be readily contaminated leading poor functioning. In addition, maintenance for broken raised pavement marker is not easy. The purpose of the study is to design and manufacture a new and improved type of raised pavement marker. The new raised pavement marker has round-shaped upper structure. Its body was separated from the holder and the reflector was surrounded by acrylic cover. We tested performances of the constituent parts, optimum load after installation, and reflection efficiency. The new raised pavement marker will be an initiation of studies on the improvement of the shape and performance of raised pavement markers.

  • Traffic accidents at night occur more than any other time because of improper road light facility and delineators. Therefore, cost-effective criteria of installing delineators are needed instead of expensive road light facility, especially, on rural road including light volume of traffic. This paper presents the criteria of installing 'Chevron Alignment Sign' considering driver's visual behavior characteristics and 'Raised Pavement Marker' considering critical encroachment angie of both straight section and curve one in order to reduce both the number of accidents on curve sections and the number of road encroachment accidents, respectively. The characteristics of visual behaviors can be expressed by visual angle involving curve radius and intersection angle. The estimated installing angles are $1^{\circ}{\sim}2.5^{\circ}$ by radii, which is based on changes in sensitivity across visual field by exogenous attention. Also, the raised pavement marker is installed every 2m, 3m, and 4m considering critical encroachment angles by radii.

  • This study investigated the effects of delineation systems on drivers' maneuver and how the effectiveness of delineation system can be further improved according to the road geometry. The experiments were conducted to collect lateral placement data and detection distance data using GPS equipped vehicles. The main results are summarizedas follows. Firstly, installing the delineation facilities on the roads helps drivers to recognize road alignment. Secondly, the detection distance is longer for delineators than for raised pavement marker in tangent section, while there is no difference in curve section. The chevron show the longest detection distance in the curve section, while the raised pavement markers showed no distinctive performance in terms of detection distance and lateral placement. Therefore, we can recommend install delineators in the tangent sections and chevrons in curve sections, based on the analysis results of effects of delineation facilities.
