A rainwater harvesting device was developed for runoff flow harvesting in a small stream or channel and its performance was evaluated in small fields. The rainwater harvesting device has slits on its side of cylindrical volume in 15 cm diameter and 70 cm length, which is designed to increase its water flow harvesting capacity. The maximum collectable water quantity was about 0.0022 ton/sec (130 L/min). Rainwater harvesting device were installed in two locations (P1, P2). P1 is a point for rainfall runoff flow harvesting. P2 is a point for ordinary flow harvesting. During this study, total rainfall depth was 334.5 mm. Runoff of 1,722 ton and 7,984 ton occurred in P1 and P2, and 273 ton and 125 ton were collected by this rainwater harvesting device. Harvesting efficiency was calculated as 15.85 % and 1.57 % in P1 and P2. Clogging of screen filter media in the cylinder due to soil and suspended solids has lowered the harvesting efficiency. However, it was possible to harvest 30 ton/month of rainwater harvesting and it is expected that it will help to solve short-term water shortage.
Urban floods are usually caused by the lack of drainage capacity. Hence, sewer capacity expansion methodology by replacing small pipes with bigger ones is primarily applied as a flood control measure. However, this approach is often unreasonable because of the costs and time involved. Thus, the installation of underground rainwater storage tanks with the two advantages of flood control and water conservation is proposed. This study compared the effectiveness of flood control by both the sewer expansion methodology and rainwater storage tanks using the Storm Water Management Model. Three cases were simulated in this study. The first case analyzed flood reduction by the storm sewer expansion methodology. The simulation results indicate that the overflow volume from manholes was reduced by 49% with this methodology. The second case analyzed flood reduction by installation of rainwater storage tanks. The simulation results indicate that the overflow volume was reduced by 62%. However, these two cases could not prevent urban floods completely. Hence, the third case analyzed the joint application of the storm sewer expansion methodology and rainwater storage tanks. In this simulation, flooding did not occur. Consequently, the results of this study clearly show that underground rainwater storage tanks are more effective for flood control than capacity expansion of storm sewer. Furthermore, the joint application of these two flood control measures is more effective than their separate application.

This study was carried out to investigate the chemical properties of rainwater in the Suwon area. Rainwater was collected from April to October in 1999 and 2000, and its chemical composition was analyzed. The pH of rainwater in April was higher than that of the months after June. Occurrence frequency of rain above pH 5.6 was 45.1%, which showed the highest ratio from rainwater samples during the investigation periods. Those of pH 5.0∼5.6 and 4.5∼4.9 range were 31.4 and 19.6%, respectively. The major cations in rainwater were $Ca^{2+}$ and N $H_{4}$$^{+}$, and S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$ made up more than 50% of total anion composition. Monthly variation of neutralization capacity of rainwater acidity by $Ca^{2+}$ and N $H_{4}$$^{+}$ decreased during the rainy season. The ratio of non-sea salt sulfate to nitrate (nss-S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$/N $O_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ ) was 2.1, which means anthropogenic S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$ contributed to acidity of rainwater two times more than N $O_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ . .
This study was carried out to investigate the chemical properties of rainwater in Taean area. The rainwater way collected for six months from May to Octotber in 1998, and analyzed its chemical composition. The ion balance and electric conductivity balance showed confidence to chemical analyses of rainwater. Distribution rates of pH of rainwater in Taean area were 43% and 38% in the range of pH $4.5{\sim}5.0$ and $5.0{\sim}5.6$, respectively. Among the 1mm fraction for initial 5mm of rainfall, ion concentration of initial rainwater (less than 1mm of rain) was higher than those of the later terms. The major ions in rainwater were $NH_4\;^+$ and $Ca_2\;^+$ for cations, and $SO_4\;^{2-}$ and $NO_3\;^-$ for anions. The pH value of rainwater showed the lowest level of 4.3 in August. The ratio of non-sea salt $SO_4\;^{2-}$ to $NO_3\;^-$ was 2.4.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the distribution and burden characteristics of heavy metals in the rainwater sampled at Suwon area, in the middle part of Korea, from April 2002 to October 2003. The relationship between concentration of heavy metal and other chemical properties in the rainwater was also evaluated. Chemical properties in the rainwater were various differences with raining periods and years. It appeared that a weighted average pH of rainwater was ranged from 4.7 to 5.5. Heavy metal concentrations in the rainwater were ranked as Zn>Pb>Cu>Ni>Cr>As>Cd. As compared with heavy metal concentrations of rainwater in 2002, Cd, Cu and As were higher than other element in 2003. There were positive correlation between major ionic components, such as Ca, Mg, and K, and heavy metal concentrations of rainwater, and As, CU, Cu, Zn and Ni were relatively higher relationship than Pb and Cr in respective to correlation coefficient. For heavy metal distribution of rainwater, the order of average enrichment factors was Cd>Pb>AS>Cu>Zn>Ni>Cr, and these were relatively higher than the natural component such as Fe, Mg and Ca. The monthly enrichment factors were relatively high in the spring (from April to May) at Suwon. The monthly amount of heavy metal precipitation was high in the rainy season from June to August because of great influence of rainfall.
In order to examine the effect of impermeable surface (rooftop, outdoor parking lot) and rainwater infiltration facilities on runoff pH, pH was measured. pH measurement spots were splash blocks accepted roof runoff of 3 sites, infiltration boxes and trenches accepted parking lot runoff and plastic rainwater harvesting facility accepted roof runoff. These measurements were operated at 3 housing complexes from 2006 to 2009. The rainwater runoff pH was influenced by the quality of the runoff surface material (concrete), the age of the building, waterproofing methods according to each housing site, antecedent rainfall conditions and others. Rain garden, infiltration boxes and trenches decreased the alkalinity of runoff by detention and infiltrating the roof and outdoor parking lot runoff. These results mean that decentralized rainwater management facilities of housing complexes can reduce effect on the outskirt aquatic ecosystem by the accumulation of substances causing pH rising in the infiltration facilities and rain garden.

The objectives of this study were to install RCR systems at a typical single family house and a school in Alabama, and evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of using the RCR systems for water harvesting in Alabama. The RCR systemswere equipped with a control system and a CR10X data logger to monitor the system operation and to collect data on precipitation, temperature, overflow, water depth in the storage tank and daily uses of toilet flushing. Daily average water use of the home for toilet flushing was 95 liter and 2100 liter was used at the school during the school days. Rainwater harvesting efficiency was 83.3 and 89 percent and RCR use efficiency was 18 and 98 percent from the home and the school, respectively. A computer program was developed to estimate potential effectiveness of RCR systems. From the analysis result with 10 years rainfall data, a total of 67,000 liters of rainwater could be harvested for domestic uses from a typical single family house which supplies 190 liters per day.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the basic unit of irrigation water on golf courses in Jeju Island. The amounts of rainwater and groundwater used on 20 golf courses have been monitored for this study. The characteristics of rainwater and groundwater from the selected 20 golf courses were analyzed based on the existing data that had been collected for three consecutive years from 2006 to 2009. The range of monthly irrigation water (groundwater + rainwater) used was about $13,200\sim55,600\;m^3$/month, with average of $36,600\;m^3$/month. In the respects of the amount of annual water used, groundwater was recorded as $163,500\;m^3$/year, and rainwater was recorded as $275,400\;m^3$/year. Thus, the total annual irrigation water used was approximately $439,000\;m^3$/year. The correlation (R2) between golf course lot size and average amount of monthly irrigation water used was 0.65, and the monthly basic unit per golf course area ($1,000\;m^2$) was calculated as $60\;m^3$.
Recently, many cities have always been affected by large natural disasters such as floods and landslides. As climate change causes more frequent localized heavy rains exceeding the conveyance capacity of sewer, flood damage is expected to increase. For the sake of reducing the urban flood damage by changed rainfall, there has been many trials on installation of runoff-reducing facilities. Therefore, it was required to study about reasonable analysis and countermeasure of rainwater storage facility project for extending it. This study was to review the status of rainwater storage facility project for the urban disaster prevention in Busan, to find out problems, and to propose the countermeasure of rainwater storage facility project for the urban disaster prevention.
Recently Ibadan in southwestern Nigeria has been facing severe water shortage due to the increase of population, social and economic activities. In order to meet the shortfall, attempts to utilize rainwater harvesting (RWH) have been made to provide an alternative source of water supply. A desk study was conducted to review various RWH technologies locally, regionally and globally. A hydrological analysis was also carried out using rainfall data for 30 years from two meteorological stations, with the aim of providing a more sustainable RWH system for water supply to private individuals, organizations, and government agencies. RWH is found to be technically feasible based on the prevailing rainfall pattern with over 90% of households having a rooftop constructed from technically appropriate materials. Results of the study indicate that an average roof of $80m^2$ will collect 82,835 L/yr (45 L/person/day) for a family of five people which is about the required water demand for drinking and cooking purposes. Hence, the capacity of storage tanks and the catchment area required for an all-purpose water supply system based on RWH are quite large. These can be reduced to affordable sizes, by collecting and storing water for cooking and drinking only while non-potable uses are supplemented by water from other sources. However, it must be highlighted that due to the type of roofing material, rainwater should go through proper treatment in order to be used for potable purposes. This study clearly shows that Ibadan city has a good rainwater harvesting potential.
