This study suggests the results of temporal and spatial variations for rainfall data in the Korean Peninsula. We got the index of the rainfall amount, frequency and extreme indices from 65 weather stations. The results could be easily understood by drawing the graph, and the Mann-Kendall trend analysis was also used to determine the tendency (up & downward/no trend) of rainfall and temperature where the trend could not be clear. Moreover, by using the FARD, frequency probability rainfalls could be calculated for 100 and 200 years and then compared each other value through the moment method, maximum likelihood method and probability weighted moments. The Average Rainfall Index (ARI) which is meant comprehensive rainfalls risk for the flood could be obtained from calculating an arithmetic mean of the RI for Amount (RIA), RI for Extreme (RIE), and RI for Frequency (RIF) and as well as the characteristics of rainfalls have been mainly classified into Amount, Extremes, and Frequency. As a result, these each Average Rainfall Indices could be increased respectively into 22.3%, 26.2%, and 5.1% for a recent decade. Since this study showed the recent climate change trend in detail, it will be useful data for the research of climate change adaptation.

This study evaluated the statistical stationarity of rainfall quantiles as well as the rainfall itself. The conventional methodologies like the Cox-Stuart test for trend and Dickey-Fuller test for a unit root used for testing the stationarity of a time series were applied and evaluated their application to the rainfall quantiles. As results, first, no obvious increasing or decreasing trend was found for the rainfall in Seoul, which was also found to be a stationary time series based on the Dickey-Fuller test. However, the Cox-Stuart test for the rainfall quantiles show some trends but not in consistent ways of increasing or decreasing. Also, the Dickey-Fuller test for a unit root shows that the rainfall quantiles are non-stationary. This result is mainly due to the difference between the rainfall data and rainfall quantiles. That is, the rainfall is a random variable without any trend or non-stationarity. On the other hand, the rainfall quantiles are estimated by considering all the data to result in high correlation between their consecutive estimates. That is, as the rainfall quantiles are estimated by adding a stationary rainfall data continuously, it becomes possible for their consecutive estimates to become highly correlated. Thus, it is natural for the rainfall quantiles to be decided non-stationary if considering the methodology used in this study.

Objectives This study was conducted to describe the regional malaria incidence in relation to the geographic and climatic conditions and describe the effect of altitude on the expansion of malaria over the last decade in Papua New Guinea. Methods Malaria incidence was estimated in five provinces from 1996 to 2008 using national health surveillance data. Time trend of malaria incidence was compared with rainfall and minimum/maximum temperature. In the Eastern Highland Province, time trend of malaria incidence over the study period was stratified by altitude. Spatio-temporal pattern of malaria was analyzed. Results Nationwide, malaria incidence was stationary. Regionally, the incidence increased markedly in the highland region (292.0/100000/yr, p =0.021), and remained stationary in the other regions. Seasonality of the malaria incidence was related with rainfall. Decreasing incidence of malaria was associated with decreasing rainfall in the southern coastal region, whereas it was not evident in the northern coastal region. In the Eastern Highland Province, malaria incidence increased in areas below 1700 m, with the rate of increase being steeper at higher altitudes. Conclusions Increasing trend of malaria incidence was prominent in the highland region of Papua New Guinea, while long-term trend was dependent upon baseline level of rainfall in coastal regions.
This study examined the relationship between the number of forest fires and days with no rainfall based on the national forest fire statistics data of the Korea Forest Service and meteorological data from the Open MET Data Portal of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA; data.kma.go.kr) for the last 30 years (1991-2021). As for the trend in precipitation amount and non-rainfall days, the rainfall and the days with rainfall decreased in 2010 compared to those in 1990s. In terms of the number of forest fires that occurred in February-May accounted for 75% of the total number of forest fires, followed by 29% in April and 25% in March. In 2000s, the total number of forest fires was 5,226, indicating the highest forest fire activity. To analyze the relationship between regional distribution of non-rainfall periods (days) and number of forest fires, the non-rainfall period was categorized into five groups (0 days, 1-10 days, 11-20 days, 21-30 days, and 31 days or longer). During the spring fire danger season, the number of forest fires was the largest when the non-rainfall period was 11-20 days; during the autumn fire precaution period, the number of forest fires was the largest when the non-rainfall period was 1-10 days, 11-20 days, and 21-30 days, showing differences in the duration of forest fire occurrence by region. The 30-year trend indicated that large forest fires occurred only between February and May, and in terms of the relationship with the non-rainfall period groups, large fires occurred when the non-rainfall period was 1-10 days. This signifies that in spring season, the dry period continued throughout the country, indicating that even a short duration of consecutive non-rainfall days poses a high risk of large forest fires.

Recently frequent occurrences of heavy rainfall and increases of rainfall intensity resulted in severe flood damage in Korea. In order to mitigate the vulnerability of flood, it is necessary to estimate proper design rainfalls considering the increasing trend of extreme rainfalls for hydrologic planning and design. This study focused the estimation of design rainfalls in a design target year. Tests of trend indicated that there are 7 sites showing increasing trends among 56 sites which have hourly data more than 30 years in Korea. This study analyzed the relationship between mean of annual maximum rainfalls and parameters of the Gumbel distribution. Based on the relationship, this study estimated the probability density function and design rainfalls in a design target year, and then constructed the rainfall-frequency curve. The proposed method estimated the design rainfalls 6-20% higher than those from the stationary rainfall frequency analysis.
Climate change has been social and environmental issues, it typically indicates the trend changes of not only temperature but also rainfall. There is a need to consider climate changes in a long-term soil erosion estimation since soil loss in a watershed can be varied by the changes of rainfall intensity and frequency of torrential rainfall. The impacts of rainfall trend changes on soil loss, one of climate changes, were estimated using Sediment Assessment Tool for Effective Erosion Control (SATEEC) employing L module with current climate scenario and future climate scenario collected from the Korea Meteorological Administration. A 62 $km^2$ watershed was selected to explore the climate changes on soil loss. SATEEC provided an increasing trend of soil loss with the climate change scenarios, which were 182 ton/ha/year in 2010s, 169 ton/ha/year in 2020s, 192 ton/ha/year in 2030s,182 ton/ha/year in 2040s, and 218 ton/ha/year in 2050s. Moreover, it was found that approximately 90% of agricultural area in the watershed displayed the soil loss of 50 ton/ha/year which is exceeding the allow able soil loss regulation by the Ministry of Environment.

As a nonstationarity is observed in hydrological data, various studies on nonstationary frequency analysis for hydraulic structure design have been actively conducted. Although the inherent diversity in the atmosphere-ocean system is known to be related to the nonstationary phenomena, a nonstationary frequency analysis is generally performed based on the linear trend. In this study, a nonstationary frequency analysis was performed using climate indices as covariates to consider the climate variability and the long-term trend of the extreme rainfall. For 11 weather stations where the trend was detected, the long-term trend within the annual maximum rainfall data was extracted using the ensemble empirical mode decomposition. Then the correlation between the extracted data and various climate indices was analyzed. As a result, autumn-averaged AMM, autumn-averaged AMO, and summer-averaged NINO4 in the previous year significantly influenced the long-term trend of the annual maximum rainfall data at almost all stations. The selected seasonal climate indices were applied to the generalized extreme value (GEV) model and the best model was selected using the AIC. Using the model diagnosis for the selected model and the nonstationary GEV model with the linear trend, we identified that the selected model could compensate the underestimation of the rainfall quantiles.

In this study, To analyzed the monthly long-term change characteristics of Chukwooki rainfall data set (CWK) and modern rain gage rainfall data set (MRG), tests of trend or variation were performed of each data sets using five statistical trend or variation test method. furthermore, changing characteristics of rainfall was analyzed through the accomplishment of the 2-dimensional LOWESS regression (or smoothing) which can consider both annual time-variation and inter-monthly time-variation. From the trend test, it is difficult to confirm that given data sets have significant trends. From the 2-dimensional LOWESS analysis for four rainfall characteristics, after near A.D. 1980, inter-monthly variation width in addition to quantative increment of rainfall are increased rapidly and persistently.

This study is aimed to examine the change on extreme precipitation events in South Korea. The country is divided into six basins, and seven extreme precipitation indices-related to heavy rainfall are analyzed at sixty weather stations. The increasing trend in amount of heavy rainfall is more stable than that in days of heavy rainfall. The increasing trend is the most stable when days of rainfall are more than 50 mm, or rainfall is over the 95th percentile. The precipitation indices-related to heavy rainfall was mostly increasing during analysis period. Especially, basins of the Han river, the upper Nakdong river, and the Eastern coast show significantly increasing trends compared to the other basins. However, the increasing trends of the Geum river and the Seomjin river are not statistically significant. Heavy rainfall events had stably increased in the Han and the Nakdong rivers since the mid-1970s. However, the number of stably increasing regions has decreased since the mid-2000s. It means that the frequency and intensity of the recent heavy rainfall become more irregular.

In this study, we analysed impacts of the recent increasing trend of exceedance rainfall thresholds for separation of data set and different research periods using Quantile Regression (QR) approach. And also we performed significant test for time series data using linear regression, Mann-Kendall test and Sen test over the Korean major 8-city. Spring and summer precipitation was tend to significant increase, fall and winter precipitation was tend to decrease, and heavy rainy days in last 30 years have increased from 3.1 to 15 percent average. In addition, according to the annual ranking of rainfall occurs Top $10^{th}$ percentile of precipitation for 3IQR (inter quartile range) of the increasing trend, most of the precipitation at the point of increasing trend was confirmed. Quantile 90% percentile of the average rainfall 43.5mm, the increasing trend 0.1412mm/yr, Quantile 99% percentile of the average rainfall 68.0mm, the increasing trend in the 0.1314mm/yr were analyzed. The results can be used to analyze the recent increasing trend for the annual maximum value series information and the threshold extreme hydrologic information. And also can be used as a basis data for hydraulic structures design on reflect recent changes in climate characteristics.
